This Week on the Blog

So, May begins without Ranger playoffs for the first time in years.  The NFL Draft is over and we don't get the other three Drafts till June.  So it's basically just us and the Yankees for now.  Stay strong.

Giants:  I'll produce a draft review later today or tomorrow.  I will say this: the Giants drafted as if they didn't have a major problem on the OL.  Thus, they avoided reaching for anyone and got six good players.   That said, they still have a major problem on the OL. Rookie Mini-camp starts Thursday.

Yankees:  The Yanks just had their worst April in decades.  Their rotation lacks consistentcy and they can't hit at all.   They don't grind and they don't take their walks.  And their Manager is on auto-pilot see: Betances to Ortiz, with Miller in the bullpen.  He should be choosing the innings by specific needs instead of specific innings numbers.  They should get Aroldis Chapman back this month and that should help Girardi think better, but it probably won't.

Rangers: The Rangers have been quiet as church mice, but it's probably just the calm before the storm.  They need a big offseason and they are cap strapped as currently constructed.  Buchnevich's KHL deal expired today, they ought to get him signed right away.

Knicks: The Lakers got Luke Walton. The Knicks will have a retread for a coach. They still need to move Carmelo and start building around Porzingis.

Have a great week!

The blame for the Yankee mess can be shared by every decision maker they have.

It is what it is. Just have to wait for the big contracts to slowly trickle off the books, starting this offseason with Teix and Beltran, A-Rod, CC and probably Tanaka the next offseason then Headley and McCann the offseason after that.

They can easily sell some of these players and speed up the process but this group won't get the right pieces back.

Problem with the Yankees is they never drop veterans for prospects. Maybe they'll be inspired by recent successful teams that have gone that route. If Hal doesn't want to go over the $180M, you have to go with youth.

Saw a stat last night that the Yankees are the only MLB team that has 0 extra base hits from their 3B position. Crazy as this is a power bat position.

That's true (with the exception of the 2005 season) but if this shit show continues, it's hard to imagine they can continue to pretend to contend, although they could try to a band-aid soon before having to give up the ghost.

So he really expected A-Rod and Teix to be the same as last year? Maybe one of them is...for now, and maybe the offense will start kicking butt, but don't pretend they had a great offense to build on. This is why I think he's kind of a joke.

“I can tell you they are better than this,” Cashman said. “That is a fact. From an offensive standpoint, we finished second in the league in runs scored and the winter added Starlin Castro and Aaron Hicks. We are obviously better than this. That’s a fact inside the game or outside the game to the casual fan or if you are covering on the media. That is an answer that everybody would easily say. These guys are better than what they are showing.”

So Tunsil being a stoner is a disqualification but
this behavior isn't?

Lewis is a 6-foot, 201-pound wide receiver from Bowling Green. He caught 158 passes in two seasons at Bowling Green. There are character concerns stemming from his having been charged with two counts of rape in high school. He was convicted on a single lesser charge. IBrugler says "Lewis is a talented pass-catcher with starting potential down the road."

The stories behind the charges against Lewis, both from the same young lady, didn't make sense, nor did they jibe with what she told her friend.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman wouldn't rule out eventually demoting RHP Luis Severino if he continues to struggle.

"If necessary," Cashman said about a potential demotion, according to Chad Jennings of Lohud. "If we feel that's what has to take place, that's definitely an avenue that's open. Hopefully it doesn't have to come to that, but if that's what's in his best interest, and therefore our best interest, that's something I have no problem doing."

If he actually goes through with this instead of letting him learn at the major-league level, it will prove once and for all Cashman is not the person to rebuild this team.

He isn't but he will be.

Severino is obviously not relaxed. Girardi looks like the go ahead run in the 7th game of the WS scored. And Singleton and Kay are freaking out.

At 5:46 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Singleton used to be good. He sucks now.

So A-Rod may be DL'd with a hamstring but what an aging declining team needs is a 35 year old Swisher.

Makes no sense considering you'd have to DFA someone to open up a 40-man spot.

At 10:08 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Heyman: "Yanks have discussed break or demotion for struggling youngster Luis Severino, as said on @WFAN660AM. Nova possible fill-in"

Again, if they do this, then they don't have a clue, either about this team's realistic expectations for this season (even if you account for the possibility of them not being *this* bad) or about what it takes to truly rebuild a franchise.

At 10:43 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

But keep playing Headley, keep pitching Pineda, keep trotting out every piece of veteran crap they have. Only talented youngsters should get a short leash. And make that only their own youngsters, because Severino has been better than Didi was until he turned it around last season.

And btw, that's why I mentioned the word relax last night. The kid probably is distracted (not an excuse merely an explainer) when he failed to catch balls covering 1B. He's thinking too much because he is looking over his shoulder.

How are they ever going to have a youth movement with this attitude?

You can say the kid (prospect only, not acquired though a trade) has to have a flat learning cure, BUT Severino did that last year. A little stumble even in the context of an abomination of roster construction and oops, no patience for you.

So yes, Hal sucks, Levine sucks, Girardi sucks, etc., but come on, how is not a very significant part of this on the GM who inherited a perfect team a very large payroll advantage for most of his stealth tenure?

At 12:43 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I've always wondered how this roster would look without meddling ownership. At some point, though, on-field results have to matter in regard to Cashman's tenure.

As nice as it is to win now and then, the worst possible outcome is that they're just good enough to muddle through and avoid the hard decisions needed to be good again. Hal may be worse than Dolan, since if it was just about spending Dolan would have every great player; we'll see.

Gamel up. Let's see how much he plays and if he sticks if he hit.

The good news here is that they have nothing they can sugar-coat. I would not be surprised if a primary motive behind the Ellsbury signing, plus those of McCann and Beltran, was to blunt the PR hit they were going to take when they knew they were losing Cano. Now the proverbial emperor is getting a summons for streaking, and all the talking heads are pointing to the Mets as a good example of how to build a serious contender. One can only hope.
