This Week on the Blog

Ugh, the Rangers season just ended several weeks earlier than we'd been used to. Should be a very interesting week coming up.

Rangers:  The Rangers just looked pedestrian and ambivalent as they were eliminated in 5 by the morally corrupt Penguins.  Just a terrible turn of events and one that you could see coming or could also see the opposite coming with this bunch of weirdos.   They need changes, and the first should be a coaching change.  AV is a good coach, but he's not a good coach when it comes to mixing in youth. It cost the Rangers in the Finals two years ago and has cost the Rangers every year since.  And the Rangers have to figure out what to do with Girardi and Staal, as well as Nash, and also have to find the cap room to keep Kreider and others.  It will be yeoman's work, but must be done.  We'll stay on top of it and on top of them.  There may or may not be a little gap here between winning seasons because of all of the missing draft picks.

Giants:  The Giants will draft more players this week.  Unfortunately, they still have a lot of needs, notably on the OL, and more or less everywhere on the defense.   Also, WR, RB and TE.   As of right now they only have 6 picks.   What will they do?

Yanks: Yanks will go for the sweep against Tampa tomorrow.   But their hitting has not been able to support their starters - even when the starters offer quality starts, which keeps them from maxing their overwhelming bullpen and could ultimately lead them to being .500ish team with an historically great BP.

Knicks: The Knicks are already performing their coaching search or pretending to.  Rambis was a disaster but several writers are pushing the narrative that he'll be back.  Blatt is another candidate, and  I'd rather see Luke Walton.  There will also be trade talks, with the name Darren Collison coming up today.   We'll see how really any of it is by July.

Alright, been busy, but will try to do my usual NFL Draft stuff, and cover any breaking Rangers or Knicks moves. If there's time, I might be able to write something about the Yankee minor league system.

At the time I said keeping Girardi was a mistake, and now look. Can Gorton unload him?? They quit on AV, and he must be fired. No excuses for how he treated McILRath. They really need to blow it up and get more youth in and a coach that will and knows how to use them.

Blow it up

I agree, but keep the young core of Kreider, Step, McD, and Miller together. Skjie and McIlrath, too.

Final line on T-Yanks LHP Ian Clarkin: 7.2 IP (career high), 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 108 P (77 S). #Yankees

OK, Pineda and/or CC need to be put in the bullpen and Nova put into the starting rotation. I'm tired every time these guys pitch we are in a hole early in the game.

They seem like they are running a marathon out there from the look on their face, struggle too much internally and externally! ENOUGH! CC is just hanging in for his absurd salary and Pineda has been given enough time to learn how to pitch and keep control.

Yes, they won the Montero trade, but what did they win?

Start the youth movement. Who cares if Swisher or another has-been gets a few hits.

Peter Vescey: There is no coaching search, it's Rambis.

Then why isn't it official yet? I mean, it very well may be, but what's the delay?

That was the teaser on FAN. He went on to say that Dolan and Melo have to sign off on it.

btw, Brady's suspension has been reinstated by the 2nd Circuit:

That's even more troubling since Melo should be on the way out, and not in the plans going forward.

Peter Schrager hears two names for the Giants at 10: Floyd and Conklin.

if they don't trade down, I kind of want Elliot, but I don't think he'll be there.

Rambis is horrible but I guess the "Yes" man Phil is looking for ...

agree Melo should be on the way out but likely Phil's ego will not allow him a real build with youth.

Lawyer, this might not go well on many levels but I am a Cowboy fan and think it's Ramsey/Elliot at #4.

It would be a lot of fun (draft coverage wise) if they took Ramsey. I think it will be Elliott.

#Yankees placed top pitching prospect James Kaprielian on minor league DL with elbow inflammation. Rest program now, no timetable.

Not good.

I did see the MRI showed no structural damage.

Probably to be expected with the significant velocity jump. I guess that's good news RE: the MRI, but this is what kept Clarkin sidelined all of last year until the AFL.

Pitchers are so damn fragile.

Yankees 2015 first round pick James Kaprielian has inflammation in his right elbow and will be out indefinitely. Kaprielian-- whom there has been chatter could move from Single-A to the big leagues this season -- will be treated conservatively, according to the Yankees.

That's from Marchand.

I really am curious what the NYG do -- I love Elliot but next years RB class is STACKED - so it might not make sense to draft him.

At 3:21 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

The problem is, as we all know, that because they can't draft beyond the first two rounds, they are more likely to go for need the first two rounds. That's why they could not have taken Cooper last year even if he was available when they picked.

And now with John Mara saying that Jerry knows he has to produce, I think all of that is even more true.

At 4:37 PM, Blogger TB said...

You can't judge next years talent yet, heck it's hard enough to judge this years. It will take 2-3 years to evaluate this draft.

Stinks about Kap, can we ever get good news on a pitching prospect without bad news shortly thereafter?

Sad about the Rangers. I think they have some difficult decisions to make. The fundamental one -- on which all else hangs -- is what went wrong with Lundqvist and do they still think he can carry a team to the Stanley Cup. If the answer is no, then they have to start dismantling the team as it is, moving whatever expensive contracts they can, and figuring out if they have a franchise goalie in their system or if they need to obtain one.

At 9:48 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

The Rangers need to learn that serially mortgaging the future, even if it is putatively to "win one for Lundqvist," usually ends up, paradoxically, closing the window Lundqvist (or a similar aging veteran) has to win a championship.

As a result, they needlessly messed up their talent pipeline and their cap flexibility.

It largely started with the Nash trade.

And all this mindless Brooks (and others) talk about maybe they should move Kreider because he hasn't taken the next step is to completely misperceive what is wrong with this team.

At 9:48 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Oh, and AV has to go, but won't.

At 11:01 AM, Blogger TB said...

I don't think you need the elite level goalie to win it all. Look at past years, the "better" goalie was ousted by a less likely goalie in the Rangers Series(except Stanley Cup Finals). Do you see how well the Pens goalie played? The Flyers goalie Neuvirth against a better team? That is what I wanted from Lundqvist, Michal Neuvirth willed his team to victory when they had no right. He shutout the Caps in a elimination game. Then letup one in the next? Two goals total in 3 elimination games.

Don't tell me it was his great defense or the Flyers had a better D than us ... because it was not ..

LH I think you make my point. A goalie who can stay white hot for a sustained period of time is usually a key ingredient in drives for the Cup, even as against a better rated goalie. I recall when I was kid and a real hockey fanatic how Ken Dryden came out of nowhere to snag a couple of Cups when the Canadiens weren't that good -- before people like LaFleur and Shutt and Robinson became real stars. Bernie Parent was always a very tough goalie, and he carried the Flyers in '74 and '75 as well. Billy Smith -- not the greatest goalie around during his time -- could play very hot for the playoff run as well. Cheers! S68.

Interesting. I'm in the camp that wants Jack.

LH -- While you can't look ahead in drafts, next year's class is packed with McCafrey, Fournette, etc. I like Elliot as much as possible but I'm not sure drafting a rb helps move this franchise forward this year.

If he is there and their doctors have a very high level of confidence that microfracture is extremely unlikely, then I'm fine with Jack.

LINJ,

Good read from the Post. I'll be interested to see how they factor this into building a lineup once the big contracts start coming off the books.

uh oh, Cashman is threatening to be forced to make moves because the roster he put together is not performing up to his standards. So this means one of two things, both are not good IMO.

1. Cashman will drop some struggling young players into the minors, because it's always their fault not the guys he gave big money to that are choking.
2. Cashman will trade a top young player to help out his pathetic overpaid veterans save face. Setback for a real rebuild.
