Yanks: Severino and Bird Beat Rays
Luis Severino was dominant and Greg Bird knocked in 2 of the Yanks 3 runs with a double and a homer -- as the Yanks won 3-1. And the only reason the Rays were even able to get run was their damn in play catwalk. Sheesh. Girardi took Severino out with a run in and two outs in the 6th, which, yet again lead to a 7th inning appearance by Betances - who's seen too many since the all-star game. Betances just hasn't been as sharp... Anyway, it was 2-1 when he came in, but Greg Bird homered in the top of the 9th for the "cushion." Ellsbury finally had some hits. Hilariously, Ackley, a lefty hitter, was lifted for Young even though the pitcher coming in was a lefty with reverse splits. What's in that binder, anyway? Drew's compromising photos of Girardi?

Girardi is a bigger threat to the team than the Blue Jays or any other baseball competition.
The GM and the owner cannot let this stand. This is serious.
Glad to see Severino bounce back after that disastrous outing against TOR last week.
Saw this on the news feed to the right. Since Phil constantly brings up the offense's need to grind, it's worth pointing out that's exactly what Ellsbury ISN'T doing:

I saw RAB praising Jennings for this:

Here's why I think it's too facile:
1) Citing Bird and Severino as evidence that they trust young players is a gross oversimplification. It means they trust the top of their farm system, but you cannot construct a roster exclusively with the highest rated talent in the system; you need good as well as very good players. That is what Refs is likely to be, and beyond that, would they have trusted either but for injuries and/or under-performance. I think the inescapable conclusion is that there is no way that Bird would have been given a chance but for Teix's injury. That's probably true of Severino as well, but their rotation is and was so fragile, the opening was always more foreseeable.
2) He cites SSS platoon splits: Ryan: .286/.333/.500 (in the Majors)
Pirela: .270/.361/.365 (in Triple-A)
Refsnyder: .224/.349/.360 (in Triple-A)
But Refs hits RH pitchers better, and as I said, the sample size is too small to matter with regard to Ryan, who got a bunch of hits early when he came off the DL. That's why SSS are silly to cite.
3) He cites Drew's OPS compared to other 2B, since June 1. Again, that is cherry picking start and end points, and it overlooks Refsnyder's potential to develop into something much better. As a result, it is an investment in the future as well as a present time play.
By Jennings' logic, Roberts should have remained last season because his OPS+ is better than Drew's.
4) He thinks it''s ridiculous to say that Refsnyder should not have been called up if he wasn't going to play because that's the way it is with most Sept callups.
He is either unable or unwilling to acknowledge that thee is an actual desperate need for improvement at 2B, yet despite the need, based on his actions, there is no way Joey was ever going to play him.
This Jennings in a nutshell. A nice guy, not dumb, but he looks for any angle he can find to not cause waves with the team he covers:
I would be very curious to see what Refsnyder could do. At the bottom of the order, with no pressure to carry the offense, and with plenty of late-inning defensive options available, I’d be interested to seeing him get a shot. But that’s my own bias toward young players coming through. I might be underestimating Refsnyder’s defensive shortcomings, and in no way to think he would really jump-start the offense from the No. 9 hole. I would just like to see him play because I’m curious.
But to say the Yankees are ridiculous for sticking with Drew and Ryan — to say there’s no logic in that decision — is just wrong.
Really, jump-starting the offense??? How about merely being a more reliable contributor on a team with a lot of offensive holes?
Jennings' article falls flat for me as well. He's dead wrong saying Pirela got an ample opportunity in the first half -- he didn't. He barely played, and with no regular work, it isn't fair to evaluate him. And he said the starter would need to play his way out of the position. Well, I'm not exactly sure what he would call what Drew has done despite the occasional home run and that one hot streak a few weeks ago.
Further, Bird is only getting a shot because Teix is hurt. Only Severino has made the team purely from a merit standpoint.
Also, he seemed to acknowledge Girardi has a preference for veterans. If that's true, he doesn't need to be managing the team going forward, period.
Bird was promoted before Tex got hurt so he could spot Tex and ARod. So that was merit, too.
But let's be honest: He wasn't playing regularly prior to the injury. I do think he'll get preferential treatment going forward compared to, say, Refsnyder, but he didn't have a regular spot as long as Teix was healthy and producing.
The NYP has an article about switching Mateo to 2B.
That's a bad idea. They should consider moving Thairo Estrada there.

I think I overstated it.
Speaking of overstatements, tonight is the most important game of the last few months...um, weeks...um, days...
Is Binder Boy really going to start Ryan? I would rather go with Drew or Ackley v. Matz
Well...I have contempt for this fool.
Brett Gardner CF
Chase Headley 3B
Carlos Beltran RF
Chris Young LF
Greg Bird 1B
John Ryan Murphy C
Didi Gregorius SS
Brendan Ryan 2B
Masahiro Tanaka RHP
Tanaka has got to stop giving up homers.
He didn't listen to me.
I would have PH for Ryan
I would rather have Tanaka hit
Girardi eats shit
Seriously, in real time it was easy to see the importance of the Ryan AB
His one pitch AB?
Yes.
And it was also obvious that the bullpen that Clueless destroyed wouldn't be better than Tanaka at 81 or so pitches.
The Mets aren't even that good. They've made a living beating up on bad NL East teams. Come on, Yankees.
The current Yankee offense with this manager makes them not good.
Hard to disagree with this take, though I think Teix's injury and ARod's slumping at times also contributed:
@jedleyq: What has put the #Yankees in this position. Using Shreve and Pinder. Warren in the bullpen and not in the rotation. 6-8 losses.
Hope he's right:
@jedleyq: This is another loss on Girardi. Been too many this season. He will have to answer for them.
@jedleyq: @FranksYanks23 Do not be so sure. (In response to a quote saying the team would never fire Girardi.)
Yes, w/o them
Refsnyder is a right handed batter who grinds out his at bats like Bird. We could have used him tonight.
Definitely
I'm not familiar with Jed Weisberger.
Writer who covers major and minor league teams. Also a Yankee fan I think. He at least follows the team closely. Said three separate scouts for other teams called Warren to the pen the worst move of the season.
It is so telling that Clueless is now willing to sit Drew, who is much better than Ryan, for Ackley, who has had a terrible ML career despite the hope that a change of scenery, etc. is a decent risk/reward proposition, while Ryan is permitted to be one of the worst hitters in MLB.
Then factor in how his bullpen mismanagement has destroyed two relievers, and it is little wonder why this team is imploding.
