Severino Beats The Pale Hose

The Luis Severino and the Yanks just beat the White Sox 6-1.  Luis Severino only struck out 2, but got four DP's, and pitched 6 scoreless innings all the time protecting 1-0 lead.  Things opened up a bit as Dustin Ackley homered to make it 2-0 and the Yanks tacked on till they hit 6.   The Analytics folks may have forced another "pinstripe effect" with Ackley.  He's working his at bats and coming up with some big hits.   Speaking of working AB's Bird and Slade both had a few hits and really grinded them out.  Bird was also hit by a pitch and Slade walked.  Refs was in late as a pinch runner and worked a full count before striking out.   Big win for Luis.

This team is dripping with young talent. Actually employing it going forward is another matter altogether.

Yup, and I'll have an article up about that soon.

Lawyer any thoughts on who should be our nxt manager? When they win its inspite of Trapper Keeper Joe I think he is a detriment to our youth..

I also think they will be in on Price despite what Sherman thinks.

I'm hoping for Brian Butterfield, or someone like that.

I think Girardi is staying and although I don't wish any harm on him, if this is the reason they finally sat Drew, it is very disappointing

LoHud is contra

Granted, Drew has been sick, but Girardi said Ackley’s playing time has been because of Ackley’s performance, not Drew’s health. And if Girardi were planning to start someone other than Refsnyder against postseason lefties, wouldn’t someone other than Refsnyder be getting these most recent at-bats in preparation?

Dave Miley won't be managing the RailRaiders next year, per the team's beat writer.

Tanaka starting Wed.

I would make A-Rod the most expensive manager ever. Kills two birds with one stone, or some such.

Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Brett Gardner LF
Alex Rodriguez DH
Carlos Beltran RF
Chase Headley 3B
Greg Bird 1B
John Ryan Murphy C
Didi Gregorius SS
Rob Refsnyder 2B

RHP Ivan Nova

I love the way (not really) Yankee stenographers think they are smarter than fans by parroting that may or may not be the company line:

Sweeny Murti ✔ @YankeesWFAN
Platooning healthy Teixiera makes no sense. Gardner/Beltran being paid to play not sit. Bird's time will come.

At 3:07 PM, Anonymous Stottlemyre68 said...

Based on this season, I would limit ARod, Teix, and Beltran to about 100-120 games each in order to avoid injuries and general exhaustion. That leaves plenty of game time for Bird and possibly Slade or Mason to get playing time.

At 3:19 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I think Beltran is tradeable. Teix too, but he has a no trade.

Nova looks good. I hope I didn't jinx him.

At 5:24 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Refs with another hit, but had a 3-2 count in his first AB.

And what's up with the 12 players who supposedly support Papsmear? what the fuck

At 5:58 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Nova began to tire a little in the 6th and it is only an issue because the offense isn't.

At 6:06 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Alas a 5 inning pitcher

At 6:52 PM, Anonymous Stottlemyre68 said...

I wouldn't want to count on Nova as part of the rotation next year. I'd like to see Tanaka, Pineda, Severino, Eovaldi, and then Warren, CC, and Nova battling it out for the last starter position with Mitchell waiting in the wings and others like Davis on their way up.

At 3:35 AM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

I'd like to see them move Nova and Beltran or Teix this winter

At 9:16 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I would add McCann to that list, not because he's bad, but because I'd like to see Murphy and Sanchez get the at-bats at catcher. He has a NTC, but if you approached Atlanta and offered to pay some of his salary, I think they'd do the deal and that McCann would waive the clause for the Braves.

I'd love to include Headley on that list, but I'm not sure there's anyone that could fill in at third for him in the near future given Jagielo has serious question marks as to whether he'll remain at third.

One way or another, they need to find at-bats for Bird and Heathcott/Williams.

At 11:01 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Ellsbury is the player I would like to move the most because he can't stay on the field and they have replacements, but that would require about a $50m meal on their part. I can't see it.

McCann's salary would be about 20% of the Atlanta's current payroll, or about 26% of their projected 2016 budget. Maybe if the Yankees reduced it to 10% they might be interested, but that would require almost a $30m write-down by the Yankees. Although I would love to see it, I don't think they would consider it. So it would take a sea change in Atlanta's spending outlook.

Again, I think they can move Beltran and Teix as is financially, but Teix has said he would never waive his NTC because he is comfy in Greenwich. Maybe if they told him he would be a bench player if he stays, but would that do that? I'm skeptical.

Beltran is the guy. Obviously, Nova can be moved as well. I think he has one more year of arbitration, and there is a reasonable basis to believe he can get better with another year removed from TJS.

All kinds of stupid ass Girardi shit here

At 5:45 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Pineda is as good and bad as any recent pitcher I can recall, which also mean he can't be relied on.

At 7:22 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

To me this is his "sophomore slump" season, given his numerous injuries over recent years. Hope he adjusts next season.

At 7:48 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I don't see it that way given that his rookie season was 2011. Additionally, he has virtually the same ERA+ this season as his rookie season), but even if he was consistent, he can't stay on the field. That's why I don't think he can be counted on.

This team has basically played without A-Rod and Teixeira for about two months. They can't win that way.

They need offense and besides Ackley/Refs, Slade is probably the only one who can provide it, unless they also play Murphy at 3B, which they won't, although it sounds like he will play v. LHP at 1B, and I don't like that at all.

Stubborn loyalty to endlessly slumping veterans should get a manager fired.

At 6:21 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

The more I think about it, why would you sit Bird instead of Headley when Murphy has actually playing third-base?

At 11:26 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I would say because Murphy's lack of defensive experience is less of a problem at first than third, but then again, Headley's defense is a disaster this season, so that may be a moot point.

At 11:33 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

But Murphy has played 3B but not 1B.

It doesn't matter. Joey G. will do whatever he wants.

At 12:31 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

How long ago was that? And how many innings did he get at the position?

Regardless, if he's so concerned about switching up the lineup, he should just take Bird's reverse splits into account and start Murphy at catcher.

At 12:40 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Only 14 games, but that's more than at 1B.

That makes more sense.

OT, but if you want some laughs, head over to NYYFans. Some troll, perhaps a banned former member, is posing as WIN METHOD (remember that nonsense from back in the mid-2000s there?) and they haven't figured out not to respond to him yet.

He said he'd only sign Bryce Harper to a three-year deal if he reached free agency. LOL.

@mikeaxisa: The 2015 Yankees are pulling off the rare combination of exceeding expectations and being a huge disappointment.

At 9:17 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Well as we said, A-Rod and Teix are largely responsible for the exceeding aspect and once that ended, disappointment was sure to follow...

BECAUSE

Too many sucky expensive players, not bold enough to play their talented young players UNLESS they have to.

At 9:48 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

LINJ, I'll give you credit, you called this back in the earlier part of the season by pointing out that depending on Teixeira and A-Rod to continue their production levels/stay healthy was unwise. I'm glad they didn't gut the farm for a SP rental, but going forward, they have to realize offense, not pitching, is this team's biggest need.

It's also worth pointing out that they might not be having these bullpen issues if they had stuck with one or two guys from AAA and let them develop instead of running the Scranton shuttle back and forth. I get why they did it — the starters weren't going deep into games and they needed fresh arms — but that coupled with Girardi's overuse has left the pen in shambles save for a couple of guys.

Phil, I'd definitely love to read your take on all the young talent and how they might employ it going forward. Would be a nice change of pace from having to think about these last three awful games.

At 6:13 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Thanks Mike.

I'm glad they didn't try prospects, although they were apparently willing to trade Mateo for yet another clioser. Yes, they had a need, but that is a very expensive way to fill it, especially because they have several other more pressing needs.

The biggest problem remains how poorly they have spent their money and whether they will let those prior bad decisions block young players, Some of which are more likely to help them win now.

They have already lost with a lot of these contracts. Do they want to lose again and again with these contracts on the field in addition to their bank accounts?

Might be better if Yanks miss the postseason..maybe then we will see wholesale roster changes.

This team will get bounced early against Premium pitching

At 8:32 AM, Anonymous Stottlemyre68 said...

The good news is that Refs has had a chance to play regularly and has shown that (a) he can hit ML pitching and (b) he is not a complete butcher at 2B.

At 8:45 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I don't think they need wholesale changes.

I think Refs can handle 2B. Sure, he will have a learning curve, but so what? Didi has basically been good and they endured his, although he is very, very streaky offensively.

If A-Rod doesn't retire, and I guess that's highly unlikely, and they can't won't trade Teix, they both need significant time off. Bird can play 40-60% of the time at 1B or DH.

Beltran can still hit, but with one year left, he can be traded to an AL team. Can they get something of value? If so, Slade, Williams, and then Judge can be an OF.

I think they are keeping McCann, but man, Murphy and Sanchez would be a sweet tandem.

Headley sucks. That is a big problem. I don't know what they can do about it.

Can Ackley play 3B? That would help. If not, make him a supersub.

Also, although Gardner and Ellsbury can be very good at times, they can't stay healthy. So the young OFers could offset that if given a real chance, but I would also look to trade Gardner because they can't trade Ellsbury.

As for management, I think Cashman has been here too long, and he seems to have lost all humility as reflected by the way he talks to the media as if he has his own esoteric baseball jargon, but the mL system has improved, so I can live with him staying, as long as Joey G. goes.

Refs moves into the second slot about a year after he should have.

At 2:05 PM, Anonymous Stottlemyre68 said...

Agreed but at least he's made it there, and made it because they needed him there.

At 2:31 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

He's only there because they were forced to play him after Drew went down and he finally got a chance to produce.

At 4:04 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

perfectly good version of second base.

“He’s seemed to improve from a mechanical standpoint as we’ve watched him turn double plays,” Girardi said. “In his work, his feet have quickened up. He seems more comfortable at the position. He has an idea about how to play the position on a daily basis better than maybe when we first saw him in spring training just because he’s gotten the reps.”

At 4:59 PM, Anonymous Bob said...

Great to see about Refsnyders defense. Hopefully he'll be the second baseman starting next year and for the next decade.
