Yanks Finally Honor Willie

So, the Yanks are finally getting around to honoring one of their greats - Willie Randolph.   I used to say that Baseball is one of Life's little IQ tests, it was true then and it's true now.   Willie Randolph was a great player.  He was terrific defender, who was an excellent baserunner and an on base machine at the plate.  In 1980, he waled 119 times and had a OPS+ of 133 for example.  His early career was a little chopped up by injuries, but these came from his fearlesness -  rember when he stood his ground as Hal McCrae ran him over?  Perhaps if he had played in the 1978 World Series, people would have a better understanding of the player he was.

Acquiring Willie Randolph as a 21 year old in the Doc Medich trade was a masterstroke that help lead the Yanks to 5 ALCS's, 4 pennants and 2 rings in his first 6 years.    But he's one of those Yanks, like Murcer and White who will always be underrated because not everyone knows the value of a walk.

Btw, almost all of Willie's power was oppo, and had his career started 10 or 15 years later, he would have had a lot more homers.

Mason Williams could be a guy if they give him an extended, uninterrupted opportunity. Let's get back to what actually achieves true success.

Looking at OPS+:

Grego's 70 is not higher than Drew's 65. I can live with a young player who may get better (that's why I always wanted him to get the full season no matter what). Drew's production is not acceptable for a 32 year old starter no matter what Joey G. says.

McCann is now at 121. I'm impressed and surprised. Good for him.

Headley's is 85. Just another terrible contract and it was foreseeable when they gave it to him. He cannot be permitted to block Jagielo when he is ready, but I am afraid that he will.

Beltran is at 90. Again, with his defense, that is unacceptable. He should be a part-time player.

They have an opportunity to turn this mess around over the next year or two. They cannot blow it yet again.

Beltran, Headley and Drew are adding nothing. They all need to be replaced.

LNJ -- Indeed. It's about time. Like Mattingly he was a reason to root for the Yankees when the team wasn't doing well and a total class act.

There really should be an "honorable mention" category in the HOF. Players like Mel and Mattingly and Willie would certainly belong there.

Can they now trade Beltran to make room for young outfielders?

So I came home from my 10-year high school reunion to find that everybody hit tonight, LOL.

Agreed on Beltran.

Yankees would have to eat a ton of money to move Beltran.

Not happening

Ivan Nova is in the clubhouse, getting dressed. Girardi said yesterday he wanted to speak with Cashman before making a decision. #Yankees

It better be Capuano who gets replaced, seriously.
