Yanks Win

Michael Pineda was on and no-hit the Marlins till giving up a bomb in the 7th, and he really had no other choice but to dominate as he did.  The Yanks could only muster 2 runs, even though they had men on pretty often.  Overall, a much needed win, but they almost wasted great pitching -- which they cannot afford to do.

His pitch count would've gotten ugly if he had continued the no-hitter.

I fear for Betances' health with this manager. A great offense could offset the burden, but the decision makers, including the manager seem to under value offense.

Billy, here's my response to your post on Ramirez in the previous thread:

While it would be nice if we could call all of our prospects up and they were immediate positives like Cano, Wang and Betances were, the fact of the matter is it takes time for some of them to adjust. I remember last year when Ramirez first came up, he looked solid, but then he sat for a week, came in and got roughed up, then got banished to the minors the next day. That's no way to treat a young player if development is the goal.

The kid has good stuff and could be an asset, but for whatever reason, they'd rather have Martin the veteran, who has also stunk. I don't know if it's a case of Girardi having too much say, Cashman being unwilling or unable to over-rule him or both, but whatever the case may be, it's indicative of a much bigger problem with this organization. Why was Pirela sent down (and played sparingly when he was up) in favor of Drew/Ryan? Why was Flores sent down the day after he went 3-for-4 so Ryan could be activated? Why do players like Capuano and Drew remain on the roster when they have younger, better, cheaper options in the minors? Why did it take so long for them to realize what we all knew about Esmil Rogers — that he stunk and never should have been signed in the first place?* Why is defense seemingly so important for young players to get a shot, but it's OK to keep watching Beltran derp around in right field game after game, when he isn't even hitting all that much anyway?

(Heck, if Beltran is allowed to play right, A-Rod should be allowed to play third or first on occasion.)

Like I said in the other thread, they will either change the way they operate in regard to younger players, or this house of cards will collapse on itself eventually. I just hope A-Rod and Teix can keep doing what they're doing this year, that they can acquire a good starting pitcher without giving up the moon and some sort of offensive reenforcement comes from somewhere, be it within or from another organization. I think this team is a tweak or two away from being a legitimate postseason contender, and I never would have thought that going into the season.

*He's totally going to be back at some point, too, which stinks.

While I largely agree, I think they can get everything they need in-house.

If you want to look at the correct approach, consider what the team is doing with Gregorius. The Yankees are convinced there's offensive upside with him, and that he will eventually figure out his mental errors in the field. Thus, they are sticking with him despite the criticism from fans and the microscope of having to follow Derek Jeter. They made an investment in him by giving up an asset to acquire him, and they are showing patience.

THAT'S the approach they should be taking with their own homegrown players. To their credit, they took that approach with Heathcott until he got hurt, and Williams is starting mostly every game (Girardi's idiotic pinch-hitting of him for Young aside).

The first step would be cleansing the roster of the veteran scrubs like Young, Ryan, and Capuano who add negative value.

The next step would be having a heart to heart with CC and Beltran to inform that their respective contracts will no longer ensure that they start games.

I would keep Drew as a supersub for now.

Of course, none of this will ever happen.

To me, in spite of his decent glove, and his 9 HRs, I dump Drew. It is over 550 plate appearances since he signed with Boston last year, and he has not come close to sniffing the .200 batting line. He seems to only HR on fastballs, but can't touch breaking stuff.

I would start Pirela every day at 2B for a solid month, and lets see what we've got. I understand the issues with Refsnyder, and his bat is in a mild slump now. I caught a couple of games the past 2 weeks in different cities, and Refsnyder did not look impressive).

In the pen, I really would gibe Nick Rumbelow a shot. He has solid control, and really throws gas. Diego Moreno is another I have seen, and he also has solid control. Not that hard a thrower compared to Nick, but he gets the job done.

I would use Drew as a (not so) super sub.

MBN -- Did Refsnyder look any better in the field?

At 7:14 AM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

I am not advocating the play of veterans over kids -- my point on Ramirez is that he deserved to be sent down. LINJ said D-Rob had rough outings when he was first brought up and that is 100% false -- Ramirez has been given chances to succeed and has not once even shown a glimpse of hope.

For the most part, the Yanks give their higher end prospects a prolonged chance to succeed and not the marginal ones. If Refsnyder was forcing his way to the MLB, I'd be all for it. However,in reality his.750 OPS as a bat only 2b isn't going to force the issue.

I don think Pirela should be up over Ryan though.

Here's DROB when he first came up just to prove my point: in his first 12 1/3 innings over 11 appearances, gave up 7 hits (4 in 1 game) 2runs, 4bb and had 14k.

100% false?

His 2008 ERA was 5.34.

Come one, man.

At 10:30 AM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

Dude your exact statement was DROB struggled initially but was never sent down, which is 100% false.

Additionally, that ERA is 100% skewed due to a 4 game stretch where he gave up 11 ER in 5ip....he only gave up 18 runs total out of 30 ip.

So as I said, DROB did not struggle initially or at all -- he had a bad 4 game stretch that skewed his "era" -- his FIP of 3.5 was more than respectable for a rookie.

I wish I could say the same for Jose. In 13ip, he's walked 11 and given up 17 hits. If there's ONE area where the Yanks give chances to players, it's 100% RP.

Initially in terms of his Yankee career. It was not a good season, but it was a necessary one so that he could be what he later became.

You are killing Ramirez for 13 ips. That could be a blip.

Without comparing their ceilings, look at Grego.

He started out abysmally. If they pulled the plug after a couple of weeks or even a month, we would never see the comparative rebound.

Let's stipulate that development is hard. BUT it's necessary.

And again, Martin has sucked too. He doesn't have Ramirez's upside.

Why is he here if not for veteran-ness?

At 12:16 PM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

I don't think Martin is bad -- he was pitching great before he got hit with some elbow tendinitis and it's not like he is a veteran, he's only pitched 1 season in the majors.

Capuano sucks and should be cut -- De Paula is probably here temporarily..Santos..yuck.

I'm all for giving Ramirez a shot and I agree that 13ip is a very SSS but here's the caveat. I can live with pitchers giving up hits (lindgren) but I can absolutely not give any leeway to a RP who comes in and can't throw strikes. It's beyond unacceptable.

When you field like Beltran, you can't hit like Beltran.

There were no opportunities for anything but routine plays in the games I caught. He turned the DP nicely, and he showed an accurate arm throwing to 1B. Nothing that I can really judge him on.

Sorry for the lame response, but it is what it is.

Thanks MBN, and your response is in no way lame. At least he's making the routine plays. I'm not holding my breath for him to turn into Joe Morgan in the field, so this is pretty good news. Wasn't one of the raps against his defense that he didn't turn the DP well?

Cheers! S68.

Well, LINJ got his wish -- Chris Martin optioned to AAA & Santos to the DL.

Pinder & Mitchell called up.
