The other day, I mentioned that the Carpenter DFA would probably turn into a trade, and it has. The Yanks got AA 2B Tony Renda. Not much of a hitter, so Girardi should like him.
People can say that Cashman let's Girardi control the ML roster, but the options he has are provided by the GM, and he, like Girardi, preaches from the Book of Defense is Righteous.
With their advantages, the season shouldn't be a success because two aging hitters have, at least temporarily, reversed their decline in a massive and unpredictable way.
They need young offense options developing at the ML level to offset a likely decline or DL stint.
It's like, for example, when you say that there are Giants-type of OL (strong, tough, can pull), or the TB Rays draft pitchers that have the ability to throw a change.
Every successful franchise should be guided by an organizational philosophy from drafting through development to ML transactions.
The Yankee FO was soured on Carpenter. DFA means go away, unless you're a kid, like Matt Tracy, where they want you back, but they also want the 40 man roster spot.
That said, Renda is as good a pickup as can be expected for Carpenter. And, they dump the whole remaining salary, instead of paying all except for a pro-rated portion of the minimum (if someone signed him as a FA after being DFA.

When/if Hal wakes up, please tell him.
Renda is a minor leaguer.
And yeah, they should be promoting and playing the kids.
Perhaps a replacement for Refsnyder if they promote him? He was at AA for the Nats. Just hoping, but not betting the farm on this.

So if it's about defense, don't draft Refsnyder.
That's what is missing here.
It's not about defense. They only drafted two positions players with questionable bats this year. Everyone else has power or projectable power.
New thread!

I'm OK with this.
