Yanks: Mason Gets the Call Up!
Wow. The Yanks have called up Mason Williams (and Chris Martin). Mason has been through so much during his minor league career, and we don't have to recount it. But, what a tribute to the young man. that he's made it to the bigs. As you know he has crazy tools and has always been an elite defensive outfielder. But starting some time last year and continuting, Mason has been hitting again - as he strangely didn't for about two seasons - this should be fun! He can fly.

A potentially great story, but you have to think he's gone no matter when Ells comes off the DL.
I would take any of Slade, Mason, and Flores over Young or Beltran, since I don't view everything in terms of one year.
As to your point about defense on the other thread, they may have drafted projectable bats, but that's my point. The manager and the GM extol the virtues of pitching and defense, and I think a big part of the reason hat Flores played so much, unlike Pirela, was his defense.
So there is a major organizational disconnect, and it probably adds to their developmental futility.
I still do not understand the Williams call -up instead of calling up Flores to replace the DLed Miller, and have Martin replace Pirela.
Flores did nothing wrong, and looked pretty good against argument-ally the best pitcher in Baseball the other night. He also showed he really can play LF.
Unless they are trying to preserve Gardner, and have him back in LF, with mason patrolling CF against righties (the majority of pitchers)?
Who knows.
They probably think they are nearly interchangeable, but possibly demonstrating that each can play in the ML in case they may be included in a trade could also be a consideration.
I will almost certainly deeply loathe any such trade.
Who would trade for these guys? Maybe Flores, as he has been fairly consistent for a while, but Williams is coming off 2 very poor seasons, even if he has done well for 2 months so far. And Slade is hurt again.
If you believe that the upside they are showing this year is more indicative of their true talent, perhaps you can buy that at a discount.
I think someone on the other thread suggested that they drafted Kaprielian to save money for other signings.
It doesn't sound like it. My read of Oppenheimer's comments is that it is upside combined with some safety/predictability. IOW, not boom/bust, but solid projection.

Happy for Mason. The light seems to have come on. I do hope this isn't a showcase for a trade, unless said trade brings back a young OFer who's proven to hit and isn't injury-prone, a la Gardner, Ellsbury and Heathcott.
If anyone thought Kaprielian was drafted for savings, they clearly didn't even look who his advisor is.
Rather curious as to why Mason over Flores but I think as someone pointed out that maybe they want to move Gardner back to LF? I really don't know what I'm fine with either one playing.
FWIW, Francesa said he has heard that the players were upset that Flores was sent down.
It's so hard to evaluate Oppenheimer. He seems to being bringing in talent, but they seem to stagnate, or have their development derailed.
And then there is the even more glaring issue of a lack of an opportunity on the ML level.
Does Cashman not have the confidence to rely on kids, especially instead of the marginal (mostly terrible) veterans? It would seem he has the power to do it. He has been here forever, and the owner and Levine (who seems strangely quiet over the last six or so months), keep saying he is doing a "great job" when clearly he isn't.
Has Girardi refused to play them? People can talk about a GM letting a manager have freedom over the roster, but when it is at the expense of almost any important development, that rationale becomes laughable.
Whatever it is, it can not go on in the new CBA world we are currently in.
So as a fan, either it change soon, or I think it's fair to blame everyone.
Perhaps they called up Williams because he is a good center fielder. Whatever, congratulations to him for turning things around and good luck for a major league career that fulfills his promise sent.
Lawyer;
Never complain about Levine keeping quiet. The less he says publically, the better off we all will be.
