Yankees Draft Review Pt.6: Signings
So, either 8 or nine of the Yanks top 10 picks have signed, and of those only Drew Finley has commanded an over slot bonus. Though I believe the Yanks, due mostly to injuries are in a position where they had to get Finley, going over on a top 10 pick really jams them up for the back thirty picks.
We saw this last year when they gave 3rd rounder Austin DeCarr an overslot payment for a much smaller draft pool and then couldn't really lock up any of their most intriguing signability guys from rounds 11-40. So, though I believe they had to have Finley, I wonder if they could have still gotten him for less if they'd been a little more patient.
Seems everyone else is slot or under in the top 10 picks. Btw, when I was writing up Brendan Wagner last week, I didn't realize he is only 19 and fits right into that offensive age group with the Yanks are a little short. So does Danny Sands and he's already in under slot.
We're still waiting on Jeff Degano, the second round senior who could net the Yanks huge savings -- and of course they shouldn't budge overslot for James Kaprielian. If he won't sign for slot, the Yanks get the pick back, but lose the slot money -- but it wouldn't effect their other savings. Essentially going over slot with any of your top 10 picks is really regrettable.

I assume Degano will be significantly underslot, but nobody else in Round 2 really is. Just under $200 is the largest slot savings I've seen from 12/28 picks signed, and more overslots (5) than under (4).
Boras could stretch it out until the deadline, but you know that when you draft his clients.
The first round is shaping up to have very few overslots. I'm not sure his claim for extra money is much better than Jon Harris or Nick Plummer (Plummer as a HS kid had more leverage) and both of them signed for slot.
Degano is a senior with medical history. They'd better get pretty big savings on him.
That makes sense but Boras often seems to think that he is sufficiently skilled as a negotiator to extract additional value for his client even in the face of countervailing market forces.
OTOH, it is true that Boras cares about relationships, and he understands the value of a good one with deep-pocketed organizations.
Maybe they can throw him a very small concession, if necessary.
Delgano seems to have a year of eligibility left because of the medicals so he has a little bit of leverage, but he'll also be 23 when the next draft rolls around so even if he's healthy he'd be lucky to get a six figure bonus.
Based on Degano's tweet, I suspect he is signed and that the Yankees are hiding the number from Boras so that Boras doesn't know what he's shooting at. On the face of it, it seems a bit disappointing that Holder got only $100K off slot and that Hendrix got close to slot, but I hardly have a sense of the market. I'd agree that I'd like to see some significant savings on Degano, but I'm not holding my breath.
If Kapreilian really is ready to get on a fast track to the MLs, he's crazy not to sign quickly and definitely this year so he can move up the ladder as fast as possible and come to spring training next year already pegged for an advanced level. And he should be reminded that Boras isn't exactly infallible . . . just ask JD Drew.
I have sometimes thought that when you are an established talent likely to be drafted high in a slotting system, why not negotiate yourself (or with your dad or trusted friend/adviser), and then hire a lawyer to put the agreement into writing. Paying a lawyer by the hour is cheaper than paying an agent, what 3%?, of whatever million.
So why is Ramirez going down for DePaula instead of Martin?
Because #veterans
That's why I trash them. It isn't working. They have under performed their advantages since at least 2000. And yes, the blame can be shared, but no one is immune either.
Having said that, they really need this game and a good performance from Big Mike.
They'll either change or continue to operate by the same failed model, only to watch the house of cards collapse. Then, hopefully, change for the better.
Flaherty second guesses McCann's pitch calling not infrequently
And it's not just the NYY, it's the NYK. I just heard Alan Hahn Talking about the Knicks trading Russell for Russell Westbrook why because the Knicks need stars. what about a carefully laid plan growing with young players. There's a reason the Knicks haven't won a championship since I was a kid Win now is that reason
i don't see how ramirez being sent down is #veterans -- everytime he gets a chance, he's been absolutely terrible -- you can't come in and walk the bases loaded. luckily santos bailed him out.
Was Martin better?
Out
I'm surprised he was out but it looked like something that you couldn't prove
Check out David Robertson's early appearances when he came up. He wasn't good either.
Boras has already had two first round advisees sign for slot. I don't see Kaprielian getting significantly above. Funkhouser maybe, certainly Daz Cameron, but Kaprielian was not projected above where he was drafted, he hasn't pitched since the draft so he can't base a demand on that (Alex Young arguably could).
In BA's 4.0 mock draft of May 30th, Manuel said:
"UCLA’s James Kaprielian and Cal State Fullerton’s Thomas Eshelman are moving up draft boards, Kaprielian step by step and Eshelman in leaps and bounds."
He had him going to the Cubs at 9.
In his 5.0 mock draft of June 5th, he had him going to the Rays at 13.

Negotiations are often about conflicting perceptions of value, right?
So who knows?
I doubt there was any big savings on DeGano. I believe he is signed (otherwise, he better get some lessons in how to use social media). I also believe the Yankees are hiding the exact amount so they can get a couple of the later round kids done. Hopefully Gilliam is one of them.
Slot for DeGano is $1,074,400. I bet the real number is in the $900,000 range. I would be surprised if it is lower than that. On the other hand, I would be very surprised if it's much above that figure.
I wouldn't be at all unhappy if MBN's scenario were in fact the case. The market is what it is and the Yankees are in the market with real money. It would be nice to have some savings post-Kapreilian to use on a signability case or two.
