Knicks Calling Up Langston Galloway
The Knicks are filling one of their recently created roster spaces by calling up Langston Galloway. Galloway, who has been an undersized SG had been turning into a PG for the DKnicks, and Jackson apparently believes he'll make a good PG for the triangle. We'll see.
In general, after last night's trade, people are advocating a big star strategy around the cap space that was created. I'm not sure that's the best course. Long time readers of the blog know I massively favor guys who know how to play over names and can't play but look good prospects. I think for the money and assets that the Knicks will have, they should be able to assemble a team that is 8 deep in guys that fit the triangle, want to play D, and know how to share and score the ball. I don't care what their names are.
And I think that's the only way for the Knicks to win without trying to time out the big stars every 5 years.

Red Holzman would approve, Phil.
Where do you think I learned it?
Phil has his work cut out for him. Players want to go to a winning situation. He has said that the losing could hurt recruiting efforts.
The Knicks have no recent history of winning; NY is no longer necessary for big endorsement deals; Phil is not the coach; and Melo may not be a magnet for other players.
The other problem is the cap system. You can often only hold on to players for so long, let along 5-8, without getting into cap hell.
For example, take Wesley Matthews, a role player. He has been talked about as non-star target. He is making $7.2. What could he cost as a FA? $12? That's still a lot and starts to crowd out cap space.
That's why the draft is so important this year.
It is a chance for an impact talent, possibly someone who could be a magnet player, and he would be cost-controlled for a few years.
Maybe that could start to change the perception of the franchise.
If that pick turns out. There's your star for 10 years.
Berger says Phil is going to re-engage OKC for Reggie Jackson
I saw that earlier. Just get me guys who know how the play.
Another thought about the Holzman days.
Reed and Frazier would be max players if they hit free agency at the right time.
So it would have been tough to have the cap room for some of the depth that made that team great.
Twas their teammates that made them great, and vice versa. That's how you play basketball.
No doubt, but they would be limited in keeping them now. Plus Eddie Donovan drafted well so they had quality players and pieces to acquire depth. We haven't seen a lot of that since with the Knicks, and that covers 40+ years. In fact, the best Knick drafting GM since Donovan may have been Isiah. Of course, that also requires keeping picks.
