The Yanks Have Traded Manny Banuelos

Wow. The Yanks just trade Manny Banuelos to the Braves for major league reliever David Carpenter and minor league LHP Chasen Schreve.   Feels like they sold low on the guy that Mariano Rivera called the best pitching prospect he'd ever seen a few years ago.   They also traded young for both oldish - Carpenter will turn 30 this year, and young Chasen Shreve is 24. So Carpenter will fill the 40 spot that they created when they traded Kelley the other day.  This offseason has been a tad weird for the Yanks, and they still don't have a hitting coach or first base coach.

Manny really was a great prospect at one point, but when he gained a few ticks on his fastball as his body developed, he stopped being able to control it.  I was certainly hoping he's put it back together in pinstripes, just as Betances did.    Now Dellin is all that is left of the killer B's.

It's me saying, "...huh?"

I didn't realize Banuelos had just one option year left. But according to Joel Sherman, that's the case.

They gave up on Manny and used him to further stock their stocked BP. Sort of ponderous.

Gotta be something else coming no?? Will admit they have been active in an un Yankee like way..

"Ponderous" is an excellent word to describe it.

Really don't understand this move unless they are convinced he'll never start.

Either they know something we didn't about ManBan's arm or this is bizarre. I had been hoping that this past year was positive, showing physical recovery from surgery, and that 2015 would be the year he went all out. Maybe so, but for Los Bravos. Oh well, let's root for Severino. Happy 2015 everybody

I think there is a bigger move coming.

They are for sure trading for a starter IMO. Bullpen depth is great but this is unreal.

The worst GM in MLB

Think about it. They just traded for a pitcher that probably needs TJ yet traded one of a growing number of pitchers who are slow to recover from it. That makes no sense.

But if you want to trade for something, go get offense. But not the jerk GM.

Levine or Hal must too, but maybe in a kinky way. NTTAWWT, but it sucks for fans.

This trade is bizarre.

Banuelos only had one option left. At lest that's what's being reported, but I can't believe he didn't get an extra one from TJ.

So they traded Greene and Banuelos even though their rotation is as fragile as wet tissue paper. Mofo

Puzzling move.

Must be that a trade for a starter is on the way, or a free agent signing is coming.

Wouldn't surprise me if Yankees traded for Hamels.

Would hurt to see Judge/Severino included but to get a talent like Hamels you have to do it.

This is a rather strange trade to me but more so because I figured they would see if a normal off season would bring Manny's stuff back.

I saw Manny in both AA and AAA this past year and his stuff was down considerably -- 89-92 with poor command and an avg change up --- last time I saw him in person (2011) he was 92-94 and a plus plus change up but mediocre command.

I was hoping to see what he'd become this season but I think I was just being bias since he was a top prospect just 3 years ago.

It seems Yanks are building a power pen as Carpenter is Betances-esque and Schrever can get out both sides of the plate. This will allow us to shorten games considerably and alleviate SOME pressure from the offense.

I'll wait to pass judgement on this trade until I see / hear how Manny looks this year because ultimately what he was last year was not even a top 15 prospect in my eyes.

Funny, I saw him at SWB also and as you said he hit 93 but was all over the place and for the most part was 87-89.He also seemed to be out of sync.

Exactly -- I was holding out hope that his stuff may rebound but when it comes to TJS, stuff is usually the first thing back, it's control and command that takes longer. So if he truly is a former shell of himself, getting 1 stud reliever and another good one, both cost controlled could be a good get.

Also, the Yanks know his medicals better then any of us so I think we should give them the benefit of the doubt here. I think we are all clouded in the past of him being our top SP just 3 years ago.

Simply, it's a copy cat league. Cashman sees the success/depth that the KC team provided and is doing the same in NY. Our pitching was good last year despite losing 4/5 of the rotation to injuries. Our young players seem to step up. People always want big names, I'd rather we develop young stars. I think our offense will be much better with Tex, AROD, Beltran and a bounce back year from Mc Cann with more protection around him. Overall, with all the AL East changes, I still see us as a top 2 team.
