Giants Offseason Pt.1

Alright, we're still pretty much in a holding pattern with Giant offseason planning because we don't know what they're doing about Perry Fewell and a few of the other coaches.   Maybe we'll know later today.   Personally, I don't think they can win again with Fewell as the DC.

On the other hand, the offensive coaches seem set with the addition of Mike Sullivan as QB's coach.  While it is possible that the Giants are still in the midst of their "review" of everything, and further changes could be coming on the offensive coaching staff, I'd guess it's unlikelty.

Last year, we talked a lot about the OL, and I'm sorry we have to do it again this year.  The fact is, the OL still needs fixing, and could probably use 2 of the first three picks made on it this year -- unless they sign a great FA OL  -- who isn't hurt all the time, like Baas was, and Schwartz was this year.  I've talked about how hard it is for the Giants to find Giant-type OL's these days.  There are really a couple of reasons for this.  First, lots of college teams are now playing spread O, so those guys aren't ready to come in and play for a team like the Giants -- or really any team that doesn't play the spread. The other thing is that the Cowboys and a few other teams have modelled our old OL and lately they've been picking ahead of us a lot.   The Cowboys tried to trade up for Pugh last year in `13 and took my favorite Giant-type OL, Zach Martin this year.  Oh, and he made all pro.  And they are largely going to the playoffs because they bit the bullet and rebuilt their OL.

We still have to.  As TC pointed out, we can't run the ball consistently anymore, and that's largely for lack of talent on the OL, and the lack of blocking talent from the TE's.   Both areas need fixing.

Now, we can probably cheaply buy a blocking TE in FA.  But I'd rather fix the OL in the draft.   Picking at #9 we should be able to get a top tackle in the first round and a top guard in the second.   Of course, there'll be a temptation and, perhaps an iresistible opportunity to take a playmaker at #9, and that could be yielded to, but they'd still have to use that #2 on the OL, and that's only if they've gotten  a good OL already in FA.

The OL value should be there at 9 with Scherff, Stanley, Peat, Flowers, and Collins all in that top tier of tackles and all being nice fits for the Giants.

Of course, the OL isn't our only concern on Offense, blocking TE, RB, and even wide receiver, with Cruz's return not guaranteed, are additional needs.  And to buy all of that, they're probably going to have to extend Eli.

Stay tuned.

If Fewell goes ill be happy. After the Dallas game he should have been fired.I don't get how TC gives him a pass.

When your team has an aging immobile QB who is having the latter part of his career ruined by an underachieving GM, you cannot afford the luxury of restricting yourself to a "Giant type" of OL.

The time for that ran out when they whiffed on so many late round OL picks after ignoring the OL in the earlier rounds.

They are probably going to extend Eli to a dangerous age at big bucks in a salary cap era.

It's time for some extended competence and flexibility and no more excuses from the owner.

The reason the OL sucks is because they have too many OL's who weren't Giant type.

That inflexible mindset has put their QB at risk and removed him from the ranks of elite QB.

So it's a luxury they can't afford.

They're run game depends on guys who can pull and trap. as well as protect Eli. The OL sucked this year because they had Jerry and Walton who were not able to pull and trap, or protect Eli.

And another problem was Schwartz was hurt all year, so Jerry had to play.

Also, a big part of the protection problem was Donnell's inability to block. That's a TE problem and not an OL problem.

But, as I have mentioned before, that is all the result of the failure of Brewer, McCants, and Mosley, as well as not drafting OL high before Pugh, or finding good UDFA.

Again, it's football, guys get hurt, so it's another reason that you have to draft well; they didn't from 2008-2012.

Protecting Eli should have been the priority.

As for TE, they found one in Bennett but were willing to let him go in part because they kept Tuck beyond the point that he had fallen off of a cliff.

Beyond that, they failed with Robinson.

It's all about drafting.

Are they admitting their mistake and cutting Walton?

I've said it's because they've only been able to find good OL's in the first two rounds, And I believe that. The reason why there are no more Seuberts is guys like him get drafted now.

I still want to use one or both of our first two picks on OL, this year. As I did unless we could get a transformative playmaker with our one last year -- otherwise I wanted Zach Martin.

This is a deep year for OL's and we should be able to finally fix this trainwreck.

Let's say you're right. Then wtf didn't they draft several OL high until Pugh and who is paying for that failure?

Answer: no one

They got a bunch of good players with their ones and two's and the only OL who would have started for them that they passed on was Max Unger. And that was really stupid of them. They took Clint Sintim instead.
