Yanks Fold and Give Headley Four Years
The Yanks have signed Chase Headley to a new 4 year 52 Million dollar deal. This, of course means Prado plays second and Refsnyder and Pirela don't get legitimate shots in ST. This marks the Yanks return to overpaying in the over 30 market. And this one has a bad back. Egad, it just seems reactionary. I would have rather they go 4 years on McCarthy.

Guess my comment on the previous Yankees post was just before this blog post came out.
I swill reiterate - I like this. Make Prado the super-sub who plays 5-6 times a week at 4 different positions. Let Refsnyder get a shot a the everyday 2b JOB.
I hope that's the plan MBN.
I am a Headley fan because he does 2 things well that I value most: OBP + Defense.
Our left side should be shutdown between Headley and Didi.
Did we overpay by some? Sure, but that is due to the cost of living in New York. I think it's a fair deal.
I'd feel a lot better about this if A.) He didn't have a bad back and B.) I felt like Refsnyder was ever going to get a fair shot. But this is the same organization that chose to give Chris Capuano major-league innings instead of Bryan Mitchell. Think it would have been nice to get some idea of what Mitchell could do against MLB hitters (small sample size be damned) given the current state of the rotation?
But bring on the excuses from the organization about Refsnyder's defense not being ready, as if the 2015 team has any realistic shot at contending.
BTW, four years/$52M — $13M per — is the Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui contract. Annual salary-wise, it's about what Ellsbury is really worth.
I'm not going to speculate over why Refsnyder wasn't brought up or why Mitchell was given more time in AAA.
I think if both players are performing this season, they will be given their shot. Both players made 2 level jumps last year, I think it's fair to criticize if they are not brought up this year if they are performing.
I'm more against the length of the deal, than I am against the player. Not only could it jam up second, but they do have some 3B's who will be knocking over the next few years.
The deal is a good one for the Yankees, even with Headley's back issues, when you consider what Sandoval just got. I'm hopeful the organization proves me wrong RE: their prospects, but I'm going to have to see it to believe it.
Dave Cameron seems to like the deal more than I do. Fangraphs does see big value in Chase's D as well as above average O.
They're not looking at it in terns of its effect on the system.
As Mike pointed out, in comparison to Sandoval's deal, it's pretty great.
If you compare the 2 as players, they are very similar, which makes me like this deal even more.
Panda excels at making contact, thus having a higher avg.
Headley is more selective, but strikes out more, leading to a lower avg but higher OBP.
I hope there isn't a NTC.
So do I.
But I don't think getting a better value than Sandoval, while nice in the abstract, is of any great value to the Yankees.
The way they are going to get better and drive down the payroll is by getting younger. They didn't do that here, instead adding another over 30 player.
On days when CC pitches, and Ryan and McCann are out there, the entire team will be in their 30s.
I think folks are over-reacting here about the pipeline of 3B in the system.
We are facing 2 years of broken-down Tex. So with Headley on board, 1B will be covered better than it would be with McCann. Prado allows us to use Chase at 1B, and still have a solid glove at 3B. And that would open 2B for Refsnyder.
When Jagielo is ready (if he makes it) then Tex will be gone. So basically the Yankees are banking on 1 of Bird or Jagielo to make the show, and Chase will cover the other position. I really like M. Anduhur, who was at Charleston this past year, but he is 3-4 years away, at least. I do not think Bichette will hit enough to be a regular at 3B in the Show.
There's also Andujar who will be in High A Tampa this year, as well as a passel of IFA 3b prospects from July, one or two of whom could become phonems, over the next three seasons.
And there's also, Moncada.
I agree with MBN. Jagielo struck out 93 times in 300+ ABs at Tampa, which suggests to me that he may begin 2015 at Tampa or that he will need to spend alot of time in Trenton until he masters AA pitching. So the best case scenario for him is probably Sept. 2016 call-up, right when Texeira's contract is expiring. Bird could be on a faster track if he comes out strong at Trenton and gets a mid-season call-up to SWB. But seeing who makes the next step and who doesn't is at least half the fun of it.
Incidentally, YES had a long interview with Refs on their hot stove show last night. Refs sounded very poised, very mature, and very nice, but if there's any tea-leaves-reading to be done it's that they're going out of their way to show him to the public. I really hope he makes it, especially as my son is adopted from Asia.
