Yanks Win as Phelps Leaves Early with a Sore Elbow

Brett Gardner continued his assault on his identity by singling, doubling, walking and homering.    His homer provided the winning run in a game the Yanks won 8-7.     The Yanks had to overcome two 3 run deficits, but they did.   Drew had big night, too.   Esmil Rogers, in his Yankee debut, got the win.   Betances pitched a 2K 8th, and Robertson did his Wetteland imitation by walking the first guy in the 9th before getting a DP and a ground out to end it.

Best wishes to David Phelps, though this is ominous.  We'll have to see how they replace him.   Will it be Rogers or will they call up Bryan Mitchell again and finally let him pitch?   Or will the rush Pineda?    Losing a fifth starter almost makes it seem like the Universe is trying to tell them something, doesn't it?

Meanwhile, tomorrow, Masahiro Tanaka will play catch.   And that game of catch may determine whether or not we'll see him this year or a year or so from now.   Big game.

Before Girardi was hired Sherman had an article about all the pitching injuries on the Marlin's staff. History repeating itself ?

Brett Gardner is hitting like a corner outfielder. :)

And part of me is just being a fanboy here since he went to my high school, but the Yankees really should extend David Robertson. He's proven he can close, and weakening a strength (back end of the bullpen) seems stupid when it's obvious by the taking on of Prado's contract that money is no longer an object.

Yankees should extend Robertson. I hope that is the plan, as they did not trade him before July 31st.

Wonder where Gardner suddenly got all this power. Now, before anyone thinks I am accusing him of PEDs or something, that is not the case here, IMO. It is obvious he has changed his game. He is taking less pitches, is running less, and seems to have a slightly greater uppercut to his swing. compare it to his swing from last year.

At this point, I would say extending him before the season was a very wise move indeed.

I just wish Gardner had learned/would learn how to drag bunt. He could easily add 20-30 points to his batting average if he did. But it's good to see that he's no longer getting overpowered.

I am glad Cashman didn't trade any of the top prospects too. Although some of the talk about O'Brien's swing reminds me of the talk about a supposedly flawed prospect named Jay Buhner, O'B is 24. I suspect they think they have younger hitting prospects that they feel better about, such as Judge, Cave, Bird, Jagielo, Sanchez, and Refsnyder.

Gardner actually is seeing more pitches this year compared to last year (4.47 p/pa to 4.23p/pa in '13). Man is he having a heck of a year though. His PA are must-watch and we havent been able to say that much the last year and a half with this club.
