Whither Cash?

Yesterday, the Yanks controlling partner, Hal Steinbrenner said no decision would be made on Brian Cashman's fate as the Yankee GM until after the season.   No exactly a vote of confidence, but I'd still be pretty surprised if they brought in someone else.   Cash has had an up and down career with the Yanks, but he has appeared a bit less effective under Hal than he was under George.   Back then, Cash, as his mentor, Stick Michael had before him, could keep George from doing some of his stupider moves.  After Cash had the Tampa Execs trade for Raul Mondesi, Cash had them placed below him in his next deal.

Anyway, things have been different under Hal.  Even before draft pools were introduced and international limits were imposed, Hal was curtailing amateur spending.   It had taken Cash years and years to get George to spend on the draft again, which he started doing in 2005 and 2006,   But since George passed, it's been different.

The Yanks finally have prospects at all levels again, but they didn't for a few years because Hal was being penny wise with the amateurs.  Of course h's been pound foolish with a bunch over over 30 FA's in the majors, but is all of that Cash's fault?

It's hard to know.   And now that things are bouncing back on the farm, do they stay the course or change again?  I don't know. I do know any new GM will be walking into a strange situation with Hal and Randy Levine and some of the things that won't be changed...

To be fair, the CBAs in George's rein spawned much less parity, and as a result smaller market teams were less able to keep their best young players. So even though they were development-challenged, they could compensate in free agency.

More importantly, the Core 5 was still young and super productive, so building a team around them was much easier. (It is mindboggling that Stick and Buck got booted after what they achieved, and I don't blame Buck for still being bitter, even though it is unbecoming).

It's long past time for a change, but by that I mean a complete change, and that includes President Harpo Marx (if only he was a silent...).

Hal's a dope though, so Cashman and Eppler will stay and the best hope is regression to the mean.

I think Eppler will either be name GM here or leave this offseason. I think they will create a new position for Cashman.

That's what Axisa thinks too.

I think it would be an obscenity.

How many teams has Eppler interviewed with for the top job and not gotten it? Three, I think.

After Cashman's issues with Meanwell, I don't think he should represent a franchise, and that doesn't take into account how he has failed with trades, development, free agent signings, and his recent propensity to insult loyal fans.

Plus, they would keep Girardi, who will destroy this pitching staff with the way he apples under pressure.

I have no idea how they will get rid of Girardi since he was on some of the `90s championship teams.

Btw, I don't think Eppler's not getting other jobs is necessarily dispositive of any inability on his part. The Yanks may have demanded compensation.

And certainly, we KNOW most of the people who have gotten GM jobs aren't genii.

I don't entirely disagree, but I think any connection to Cashman should be per se disqualification.

Giradi, however, because he is on the field, is more dangerous to a pitcher's health and from what I have seen this year, he predisposes pitchers' to injury because he panics.

This is why I think Girardi and the owners are the biggest problems right now.

They are no heroes here, only villains.
