Yanks: Kuroda to be Skipped
Hiroki Kuroda, the only original starter left on this season's Yankee team, will miss his next start. Okay, so now all 5 will have missed at least some part of the season. What's more, with Kuroda being skipped, how many tricking pitchers will Girardi now insist on having? 14? Will they even send one down when Pineda is optioned, or will it be a position guy? This is inane.

I was against this signing because of his two consecutive late season fades (I wanted Kazmir), but Girardi makes everything worse. It's amazing how Teflon-coated he is with the media.
LHP Manny Banuelos: 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 1 HB, 4/3 GB/FB — 42 of 67 pitches were strikes (63%) and he was sitting around 91 … first Triple-A start since May 2012 … he’s strung together some really good starts lately, good to see him finishing the year on a high note

So one side they can have Greene, Mitchell, Man Ban, Phelps be ready for the rotation (even in a ST competition), with maybe Severino at midseason, and then Clarkin, the year after.
On another they have the question marks: CC, Tanaka, and Pineda (we will know more about the latter two by season's end).
Why add Lester at close to $25m to that? They will just lose a few less close games with this pathetic offense.
The key offseason question should be how do they fix the offense, if it is even possible given the limits that the contracts of Tex, A-Rod, Beltran, McCann, and Prado.
Sure, most of them could have a decent season, for them, but they can't rely on any of them at this point.
That makes thisa really tough problem to address.
The ever-present fear has to be a trade or trades that depletes the system, doubling down on the present.
Two consecutive years without the playoffs (barring a turnaround) could push Hal in several directions: leverage the present, or realizing that that strategy is failing, try something different, take some lumps, and reset for the next great run as they integrate young players.
If they are patient, Sanchez, Murphy, Bird, maybe even Austin could contribute in 2015, although there could be growing pains with their respective learning curves.
Or they could just muddle through like they largely have, but that probably won't produce the playoffs either, and it could reduce their payroll and roster flexibility even further, which is a really scary thought.
I don't write the checks, obviously, but I would have the most expensive bench in the history of the universe, and play kids.
I truly believe that is the quickest path to the NYY being the NYY again.
My bad: Add Refs (Castillo is scaring me) and then Judge in 2016 to the above.
LINJ, good post. Like you said, there's really no fixing the offense aside from developing from within and supplementing that with smart acquisitions (like what Nick Swisher and Bobby Abreu were at the time, for example) and free agent signings.
Thanks, Mike, and I forgot Nova
RAB tosses our letting McCann go on waivers if a team like the Dodgers would take the contract. That is similar to my suggestion about not protecting him and a bunch of others for the Rule 5. Reset payroll and roster flexibility any way they can. The status quo sucks.
Lawyer,
you'd have to waive him to get him off the 40 to be available for the rule 5. Only people who are not already on the 40 are available, that's why it's always 6 year minor leaguers or 4 year collegiate minor leaguers or whatever the number is.
Players aren't all off of your 40 man in the offseason. I don't think they can make McCann available for the rule 5.
And it has be within a certain number of years since you were drafted. So McCann cannot be made available for the Rule 5 draft.
If someone is claimed on Waivers and has a NTC, does that need to be "waived" in order for the claiming team to get him if he is not pulled back?
Oh, ok. I would put as many of these large contracts that can't possibly be traded on waivers as the CBA permits, and reap any flexibility that can be had.
Ellsbury is overpaid, but he has a lot of value, so I would keep him.
Although 10/5 preclude getting rid of Tex, CC, and A-Rod, I would gladly lose Beltran, McCann, Prado's contracts; they are terrible given their $170m worth of commitments.
I would tell Tex, however, that he can't stay on the field enough to be relied on, and that if he can be replaced, he will become a bench player.
The same with CC and A-Rod.
Saw this stat: Tyler Austin since the ASB: .374 / .426 / .637
It's either a small sample size or his wrist is finally healthy.
Hand/wrist issues can take a long time to heal, so hopefully it's the latter!
I almost forgot about Austin altogether. Agreed, let's hope it's the latter.
Austin is my choice, along with Refsnyder and Lundgren, and maybe Mitchell if there is room, to contribute in 2015. Refsnyder and Lindgren are the 2 most likely choices, but the other 2 could be in play by mid-season.
I think ManBan has to pitch regularly in AAA in the rotation for a couple of months before he can be of use in the Bronx.
Lindgren hasn't found his groove at AA yet.
I think it's only a bump in the road. He will be fine. He was too dominant in the lower levels to be unable to handle the higher levels, even if he does not average 20Ks per 9.
I agree, that's why I said yet, instead of bumped his head on...
