Giants OL Woes: Beatty Out Again Saturday
So Beatty will be out again because he had a headache last week? Is it a concussion or what? This smells funny. Meanwhile, they should move Pugh over to OLT for these games where Beatty can't go because Charles Brown will get Eli killed if given enough chances. Pugh was an outstanding collegiate OLT and he can handle it. He might even be better than Beatty right now. In fact, he probably is, just given the fact that he's not soft. It would also be instructive going forward.
Because of some slight ineptitude and bad luck with our draft windows, the Giants did not do enough to fix the line in the offseason. It's also strange that they didn't have any UDFA OL's stashed at the end of the draft. Before the draft it appeared that they were either entertaining visits from a lot of collegiate OL's or going to the pro-days of a lot of collegiate OL's - with the upshot being the only class of `14 OL they have is Weston Richburg. They've made some other waiver claims and signings along the margins, but they still look like they have only six guys who can play, tops, and that's if Beatty can.
Anyway, they should play Pugh at OLT. Then if it looks like he can be that guy, we don't have to spend a 1 on an OLT this coming year, we can spend a 2 or 3 on an ORT. And we'd still have to draft another OL.
I though we had a chance to get this done all in one offseason when they drafted Richburg, but Mewhort didn't make it to the third and we were screwed. Maybe they can pull off a trade in camp.

If they can't protect Eli, then the offseason was a failure. He's not getting any younger and he has never been particularly mobile, although he can escape one rusher at times.
But sure, before this becomes a red alert emergency, Pugh should be moved. If Beatty ever does make it all the way back, RT would be easier for him anyway.
Problem with Beatty at ORT is that he's a pussy. You kind of need someone rugged there, like Kareem was. We'd have to draft one or trade for one. We can dump Beatty after this year.
That's true, but no matter how they configure the line this year, it is likely to be suboptimal.
So prioritize keeping Eli upright.
