Yanks Have Waived and Lost Matt Thornton

The Yanks are apparently running guys through trade waivers, as they should.  Anyway the Nationals claimed Thornton and got him.   It's unclear if the Yanks just let him go or worked out a trade, but I think Thornton had a two year deal, so this is a good thing.  Maybe they'll call up Tyler Webb who is a lefty who can pitch 2 innings.

UPDATE:  Instead they call up LeRoux.  They hate their prospects who now seem to be just for show.

UPDATE: Now they are saying Rich Hill is coming up, instead.  Not that there's much difference.

UPDATE:  They've also released Jeff Francis.

This is an unequivocal positive due to the salary relief for next year.

yes it is. And a trade of old for non-existent (unless they did get someone for him who would by reason be younger).

Btw, calling up LeRoux is NOT trying to win.

They were doing strange things with marginal roster construction even under Torre. Maybe it's because Cashman is too deferential to his managers in that area, but either way, it's counterproductive.

Also, Rosenthal says the Yanks are making more moves, possibly to move money.

Filling out the non-guaranteed spots on the roster has always been one of Cashman's biggest weaknesses. Guys who have no business being on the Yankees are there far too long, and younger players with better upside waste away in the minors because of it.

I once thought that Cashman got "it," but it all started going downhill after the 2009 season. That was when it should have been obvious that the roster was getting old and that it was now even more foreseeable that Jeter and A-Rod (the two staples of the '00s) were gong to decline.

Instead that got older by trading AJack, IPK, Melky, and Coke, and would have traded Montero for Lee if Jack Z. had not kept changing his demands.

Along with that came the failure to establish either Hughes or Joba as a top of the rotation starter (or anything of real value).

At that point I came to think that it was time for a change.

Seems we could have gotten some thing in return.I guess shedding the money was enough?

Yeah, it was a dump to offset the dumps they have taken on and maybe will still take on.

He's a lefty specialist who doesn't get out lefties .. Good riddance .. Yanks have to be careful with the 40man as there are good prospects that need to be added this winter or they'll be exposed to the Rule V. I'd like to see Tyler Webb come up but at the expense of exposing Mason Williams this winter? I don't know..

I think something else is up because it's a little too quiet since the deadline, even with the shuffling they did today. I think they are working on something bigger.
