Yankee Draft `13: Day Three Review

On day 3 of the draft, the Yanks balanced their prep and collegiate picks better than they did on day 2, and took an interesting mix of pitchers and position players, but a curious lack of catchers.

Of their last 30 picks 7 were Prep pitchers: LHP Hever Bueno; LHP Jordan Floyd;  RHP Cal Quantrill;  RHP Shane McCarley, RHP Nick Green; LHP Nestor Cortes; and, RHP Josh Pettitte.   That's a lot of Prep pitching, and I have to think they have deals or understanding with at least some of them because otherwise taking that many comes at a foolish opportunity cost.   I would guess that Quantill, and Pettitte are out of the picture, but I'm interested to see what happens with the rest of them.

They took 4 Prep outfielders: Kendall Coleman; Dustin Fowler; Cody Thomas; and Andrew Schmidt.   All but Schmidt played CF, though the Yanks are listing Coleman as a RF.   Btw, I think Coleman and Fowler are likely to sign.  In fact, Coleman tweeted words to the effect that he was joining the Yankee family.  But those are the two I think they were saving room for.  I think Cody Thomas is going to Oklahoma, and Schmidt is a wildcard.

On the Prep side they also took Drew Bridges, a big power hitter who they listed at third, but other places listed him at 1st.   This is a guy that they should make a deal with, but it's unclear if they will.  They'd probably have to really work hard on a lot of other players to fit him, but he possesses exactly the kind of lefty power bat they need to be buying more of on the amateur side.

They took a lot of college pitchers:  RHP Phillip Walby; RHP Cale Coshow; LHP Caleb Smith; RHP Ryan Butler; RHP Andrew Beresford; LHP Ethan Carnes; RHP Alex Polanco; RHP Sam Agnew-Wieland;  and RHP Dillon McNamara.   That's nine collegiate pitchers and each has something to recommend them.  Butler is a JuCo and thus has some leverage, but they should be able to get him done under the current system.   Coshow looks like he could be a sleeper, do does Agnew-Wieland.

They took three more college OF's; Jordan Barnes, Charles White, and Kyle Buchanan.   Barnes seems like a possible ringer.  White is an old DES with crazy speed.  Buchanan is a junior who also has crazy speed.   We'll see who signs,.

They also took 4 collegiate infielder with some delightful names and 1 JuCo; Derek Toadvine, Chaunsey Sumner, Hector Crespo;  Ty Anefir, and Kevin Cornelius.   All of these guys will probably sign, but the most interesting bat belongs to  Chaunsey.   The Yanks have gotten pretty good at finding seniors who can hit and take walks, let's see if Chaunsey joins the group.

Strangely, the Yankees only took 1 catcher, not just on day 3 but through the entire draft.  Catcher was supposed to be one of the strengths of the draft.   That's just odd.  Of course, the do have some catchers in EST, and who knows, maybe they have another IFA lined up for a July 2 revelation.   We'll see.  But until we get more info, it's plain strange that the Yanks didn't find another catcher or two.
