Yankee Draft `13: Picks 31-35
With the latest 5 picks, the Yanks went after a guy they liked in `11, two more prep pitchers, an on base machine from Hawaii and another college 2B.
In Round 31, the Yanks took SS Kevin Cornelius, 6'01" 170. This is the guy they took in 2011. He's in his second year of JuCo and since it seems no major college has come calling, and we're the only people in the world who like him, he should probably just come correct and sign. He's let us down before, but if he goes back, we're likely to draft him even later next time around.
The 32nd saw them take 3B Chaunsey Sumner, 5'11 205. Geoge Bell used to say that you can't walk off the island, when explaining why Dominican players didn't take their walks. Well, Chaunsey walked off Hawaii today. This guy had an obscenely over .500 OBP and an SLG over .600. All of our prospects should follow his lead. Anyway, he's a senior and we're getting him. Should be in SI.
In round 34, the Yanks took 2B Hector Crespo, 5'10" 175, from Appy State. This guy is another good hitter, but it's unclear to me whether he takes his walks, but he'll be in the SI mix.
Now I did this out of order because in rounds 33 and 35, the Yanks took to Prep pitchers. First, at 33, they took RHP Shane McCarley, 6'1" 205 and then at 35 they took RHP Nick Green, 6'1 165. Now we know the new rules are crazy, but I can't help but thinking that some of these Prep pitchers are ringers. It makes no sense to take as many as they are taking if they don't intend to sign some. It's something to keep an eye on between now and July 15 -- and the rest of the draft.
