Yankee Draft `13: Rounds 6 - 10

In rounds 6-10 the Yanks continued some trends we've already touched on.  First, they took two up the middle seniors, SS John Murphy and CF Brandon Thomas with intriguing tools and upside.   Murphy's a lefty hitter with some patience and pop (though he is the only college hitter we've taken without quite a 1.0 separation between his average and his OBP, it's pretty close though).    He's also a self made speed guy who steals bases.   Brandon Thomas is a switch hitter who was a 4th round pick by the Pirates last year, but decided to go back to school.   Unfortunately, he was struck by mononucleosis and lost some time, thus making him available for the Yanks to pop in round 8.   Both of these guys also pick up on our theme of good college hitters.

They also took two more college relievers in Nick Rumbelow, a righty who K'd everyone at the Cape last summer, and plays for LSU a la Nick Goody.   Then the took the well travelled LHP Connor Kendrick out of Auburn.   This guy is all pitchability and little stuff, topping out in the `80s.   But you never know with these pitchability lefties.    Some never make it, some pitch for 20 years in the bigs.   Shaeffer Hall, our most recent such pick, seems to have stalled out at AA -- or is he gathering more craftiness?   Hard to say.   When he's got it going on, he makes hitters look silly - or he did up to AA.

And just now, the Yanks took Tyler Webb another pitchability lefty, though this one is a 6'6" 225 pound soft tosser who's already had TJS.  But has been a closer and went K crazy this year.  He's been on the championship teams in South Carolina, and profiles the closer for SI when short season begins.   And that wraps up today's picks.   The Yanks have selected 12 new players and have 30 more picks to make.
