Yankee Draft `13: Picks 26-30
The Yanks went after two tough signs, finally got a catcher and fell for one of those Draft Eligible Sophomores between rounds 26 and 30.
In round 26, the Yanks picked RHP Cal Quantrill, 6'3" 175, son of Paul, son of Canada, top 100 prospect with a Stanford commit. They have almost no shot at signing him under the new rules, and I see this pick as sort of an appologia for the abuse Joe Torre heaped on his father. Great kid, huge upside. Wish we could sign him.
In round 27, the Yanks took the Adelphi closer, RHP Dillon McNamara, 6'5" 220. Taking college closers has worked out wonderfully for the Yanks and they did it again with this pick. He'll be a hometown favorite on the Staten Island Yanks.
In Round 28, the Yanks finally got a Catcher when they popped Trent Garrison, 6'0"190. He's a 5th year senior and the twin brother of Yankee Farmhand Taylor Garrison. He'll be the SI catcher. I have no idea if he has prospect value.
In 29, they fell a draft eligible sophomore, CF Charles White, 5'9" 175. I hope he's not looking for much. He's old enough to be a senior.
In round 30, the Yanks took their other unsignable when they popped CF Cody Thomas, 6'5" 215 and the next Quarterback at Oklahoma. This kid is a crazy good athlete and another lefty swinger. He's supposed to play baseball at Oklahoma, too. I don't think signing him will be possible under the new rules.
Now, maybe a catcher with upside?
