Yankee Draft `13: Aaron Judge

So according to various twitter feeds Aaron Judge took batting practice with the Yanks tonight and expects to sign.  He's one of the Yankees 3 first rounders, and is notable for being 6'7" 255 and having tremendous raw power.  6'7" OF's are rare, but does that preclude this one from being good?    He's been playing CF for Fresno State, which is a good baseball program and by all accounts has really good athleticism and speed for his size.  He's also got a big arm.   The Yanks list him as as right fielder.  Now who does that remind you of?   Forty yeast ago, the San Diego Padres decided an improbably tall OF named Dave Winfield.  He was 6'6", and went on to have a Hall of Fame career, spending much of it as a New York Yankee.   A second athletic jumbo RF in 40 years seems like too few, rather than a second outlier.   But most of the athletic 6'7" guys who can run play TE in football or the 3 or 4 spot in hoops.

Now, Judge does still have to turn his raw power to game power.   The Yanks have had some luck with those situations.   And don't worry too much about the K's.  Giancarlo (Mike) Stanton, who is 6'6" was a K machine in the Sally league, and look where he is now, and how many Yankee fans want him.   Don't rush to judgement with Judge.   We may have another Winfield-type.

I think expecting or hoping he becomes a Dave Winfield is setting oneself up for a disappointment. That said, I do hope he becomes a power bat who can adequately hold down RF in the future. That might force a move of Austin to another spot, which can only make the Yankees stronger in the future.

BTW - any "ringers" in this draft? I mean real "ringers"

Thanks for your blog. Good stuff. Fun read.

Weird. Lost my original answer. I'll try agin.

Thanks for reading the blog!

I don't fear disappointment, which isn't to say I think Judge is going to the Hall of Famer Dave Winfield 2.

It's just odd that there have been so few jumbo OF's, and you sort of have to have Winfield type tools to be even have a chance at that size. Btw, in New Yankee Stadium Dave would literally have had a hundred or more career HR. CF at the old stadium killed some massive drives that would have been gone everywhere else.

I think the big thing right now is to stick with him through the K's as he tries to turn his raw power into game power. They've had a lot of practice with doing this, since so many of the Dominican kids participate in more showcases than games.

Anyway, Jagielo signed today for slot and I'll have something about that later.

As far as Ringers, I think there are some and I'll start listing them either later today or tomorrow - certainly by the weekend at the latest.

I'm expecting a new Ranger coach this week, and thing could get back up.

Eric Jagielo signed for slot. I also noticed that on River Ave. Blues. Great news. I think Judge will be around slot also, but Clarkin will require an over-slot bonus - probably around $2 million. They should have a savings from the college seniors and the 2nd rounder though.
