Giants Take Chad Jones

The Giants added to their safety depth/rotation by taking LSU's Chad Jones in the 3rd. Jones is a big safety, 6'2" 220, who doesn't run great forties but otherwise tests out as a great athlete. He is terrific against the run and in zones. He should be an excellent special teamer to start out, and will probably be better than Michael Johnson pretty soon. Strong pick.

Phil what about Blount tomorrow for RB?

I don't know enough to be able to say whether or not he was a good pick, but strategically, I wish that they were more willing to trade down and accumulate more picks and not fall in love with a particular player.

We need some interior OL.

Rich, how do you know they didn't try to trade down? And how do you know there is definite benefit it trading down at any given time? They ended up staying where they were and getting players they were high on. People have to call for your pick, you can't call them and see if they would want it, unless you know they've been calling around. Belichick trades around every year, but he's not getting a lot of very good players with his actual picks most years.

These 3 picks have made our defense far more athletic. If KP is fit, Fewell will have many good pieces to work with. I agree that best value at RB or OL should be our choice tomorrow.

I doubt Blount is on our board. I bet we go for a speed back.

In some sad but not shocking news

Darren Dreger: Speculation should end. Glen Sather will remain Pres+GM for the New York Rangers. More ahead as part of our intermission on TSN

That's too bad. No accountability.

Phil,

You sold me on the utility of getting more picks!!!!

Sather's sinecure will not end until he expires.

Rich,

I wanted more picks for this draft, but you have to have people willing to give them to you to get them.

They ran into three excellent values and took em. There was no offer compelling enough for them to move those picks for more picks. It just didn't fall that way. If they had gotten what they wanted for Osi, they would have gotten more picks. And they might have traded out of 15 but their #6 guy was there.

OK, it just seems like some teams always find ways to get more picks and some don't.

OT, they aren't doing Joba any favors.

At 10:22 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Rich, we've had a bunch of good drafts in a row doing it our way.

At 10:25 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I think their failure to develop LB is really hurting them, but maybe this year changes that. Kiwi hasn't really developed either.

And yet, we're one freak accident and one coordinator leaving from a possible threepeat. We have a very good roster that's gotten better and we're still a young team. All these guys are juniors.

Girardi's mismanagement sapped my energy, but your largely correct, although I don't love the HC.

We're gonna have a great last day of the draft tomorrow and start having healthy minicamps and OTAs and come back strong.

At 8:01 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I'm not saying that I don't like the draft, only the strategy.

Threepeat? The players quit on the coach last year. That's a huge factor as well.

At 10:26 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Rich, what strategy don't you like? They are getting value all over the place. So what is it that's missing?

At 11:07 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I think they needed another offensive weapon, more than one OL, more than one LB, all high in the draft. I think the only way to do that was with more picks.

Maybe this will be like the 2007 draft. Maybe most of Goff, Simtin, Kehl, Wilkinson, Beatty, Barden, Beckum, Boothe will take the next step.

But given the question marks, I thought getting more picks was critical, even if it meant passing on JPP.

So your issue is you want to draft for need and thus don't mind if it doesn't intersect with value. And the Giants insist and value and that intersection when they are looking at needs.

At 11:35 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I wanted more leverage. That why you increase your chances that can do both.

But it doesn't matter what I think.

I hope every positive scenario turns out.

I think the Giants have determined along with Fewell that they have the talent they thought they had on D, and that injuries and Sheridan disguised it. I think they still adhere to the notion of giving a pick 3 years to really start showing something. Now they they've taken 2 LB's we'll see if they cut anyone after the draft. But I have a feeling it will be a great camp.
