Yanks Win!

Javy Vazquez finally got his first win in his second tour of duty, but he still wasn't especially sharp. Though, honestly, he really only threw two bad pitches, both of which landed in the seats. His velo was down, but his other pitches were good to filthy at times. Fortunately, the Yanks were grinding. Though they didn't hit a lot, they walked, and a two run double by Nick Swisher and a 3 run homer from ARod gave the Yanks a 6-0 lead at one point. Then Vaz, who didn't last 6, gave up a solo shot, then a 2 run shot on his 106th or so pitch of the night and suddenly it was a ball game. Boon Logan got us out of the 6th, then, thanks a Jeter misplay, loaded the bases up with 2 outs in the 7th. That's when Joba showed up, and he really showed up. He K'd Kouzman of the end the 7th, then pitched a 1-2-3 8th, featuring a 96 mph fastball. Now that's not what we expect from peak Joba, but it's great for a cold night in April. The Yanks had tacked on a run in the 7th to make it 7-3, but when Marte put the first man on to start the 9th, the call once again went up for Mo. Mo got a K, then induced a 4-6-3 DP and the Yanks won! I think Hughes is pitching tomorrow. Go Yanks!

This team is very good. Just need Teix and the Nicks to start hitting.

Just looking at PitchFx, Javy's FB velo is about 2 mph off where it was at the end of last season:

Sept 30

Avg: 91.14

Max: 93.2

Tonight:

Avg: 88.92

Max: 91.4

Using Marte there seemed odd.

It's a cold night out here, and, other than Joba, everyone's velo seemed a little off.

Everyone will start hitting. These kind of teams feed off of each other.

Nice to see Cano take 3 walks when he's hit a rough patch.

It could be, but that's pretty much where Javy's FB has been for this three starts.

Speaking of the cold there, it did seem a little odd to see people wearing The North Face jackets with the hood up when the temperature was over 50.

Girardi named Joba the 8th inning guy, per Chad Jennings.

That's how he was using him.

I think it has been a motivational thing.

Probably. Maybe he's figuring out how to push buttons.
