Rangers Get Jokinen/Prust
Tonight, the Rangers completed their trade with Calgary that saw Kotalik and Higgins move North for Jokinen and Prust. The Rangers pick up a seasoned scorer who'll be playing for a new contract in Oli, and a middleweight brawler in Prust. The team got better and gains cap room at the end of the season. I wouldn't be surprised if this is just the opening trade as Sather may want to go out with a flourish. Good trade.

more to come I believe
This guy is right that they desperately need a big defenseman (or two), but if you can clear cap room, you do it, even if there's a danger that Sather will screw up again.
We need a another great offensive player. We're loaded with D prospects, but the tragic death of Cherepanov left us short on super high end offensive talent.
Who is/are the prospect(s) on defense who will kick butt in front of the net and when is the ETA for being in NY?
As tragic as Cherepanov's death was, I would hope that he would never have passed an NHL physical.
I don't now what you mean. Do you mean you hope the NHL would have picked up the defect?
They have a coupld of D's who are more or less ready. Staal is the guy who's supposed to grow into the net clearing force. McDonagh will probably be in the NHL next year, he's at Wisconsin now.
Yes, from what I remember reading, sophisticated testing would have picked it up and disqualified him from playing.
I never saw Staal as that type of player, but what do I know.
OT Phil, but please tell me that Joel Sherman and others are wrong about Joba being a reliever?
He's going to camp as a starter. The rest is up to him.
OT, Gallo has been rebounding better lately.
Tonight's game offers an indication that perhaps D'Antoni has misused Nate and that Duhon blows.
If Nate would commit to being a PG, there wouldn't be a problem.
Gallo has all around game and is a good rebounder.
Kovalchuk is in play, Sather appears more motivated now then at any other time... so we shall see...
D'Antoni says he's sticking with Nate at PG, so there you go.
We're supposedly one of the 5 teams in of Kovalchuk.
We definitely are, per my info. I am hearing that they want Cally and Dubi, but Slats is more likely to part w Dubi then Cally. A Dubi/Girardi package is a starting point, but there has to be another piece in there which may get tricky..
We'll see what happens.
Via Hahn:
D'Antoni was so pleased he hinted that he may consider starting Robinson over Duhon, though he added, "Don't hold me to that."
The Rangers are out of the IK race. Price was too steep.
They have too many holes to make that kind of trade.
I cannot understand why the Rangers always have to overpay, yet the Devils gave up crap for IK. I am skeptical he will re-sign there. Oh wait the Devils have a competent GM... What are your views Phil, on why this happened, and always seems to?
Our price was too high. I think everyone backed out, then Lou drove a hard bargain.
Why can't Sather do that? I was at the game tonight there were sure a lot of #8 jerseys, and I don't mean Prust.. To quote Francesa it's time to back up the truck.. I think we should claim Witt, but doubt we will.. We are still a big D man and C away.. Amazing how much our Captain plays these days..
That's why I said they are tough to root for. It's better if they lose.
Brooks:
"...the Blueshirts could not have accommodated Kovalchuk’s $6,389,300 full-season cap hit without removing either Michal Rozsival’s $5 million or Wade Redden’s $6.5M charge from the books, and that only could have been done through a waiver process that would not have been completed until noon on Saturday.
In any event, it is impossible to understand how Waddell asked the Rangers for Marc Staal or Michael Del Zotto; plus Brandon Dubinsky or Ryan Callahan; plus a top prospect; plus a first-rounder and then accept the package he received from New Jersey.
Again, though, with just $1.2M of full-season cap space to spend, the Rangers could not have pulled the trigger on a Kovalchuk deal until Saturday at the earliest.
Rangers players were unaware of the trade that was announced during the first period of their 6-5 Garden defeat to the Caps."
we would not have had this problem if R and R were not here in the first place.... The only hope is that Sather is removed ,and then maybe if IK does not re-sign Messier will remove R/R as first order of biz.
Atlanta took a bad deal.
OT, CC on LeBron and Damon.

Atlanta took a worse deal then they got for Hossa... The hope is that IK does not resign w the Devils... not sure what to make of it yet... As long as Sather is in charge though we will never be anything better then inconsistent.
If they offer the money, why wouldn't he sign? They're a state of the art organization.
OT again, Brandon Jacobs's comments are a further indication to me that his best days are behind him.
The Devils are notoriously frugal, and spending big bucks on one player is not Lou's style, but I suppose it could happen..
