Yanks Sign an IFA

The Yanks today signed IFA SS Fernando Perez. Perez is now 19, but was 18 when the Yanks signed him under the name Arredondo in July, thinking he was 16. Make sense? Arredondo got age suspended by major league baseball, but because he can run a 6.4 60 and has shown hitting prowess, the Yanks re-signed him today at the end of his suspension. So, throw another toolsy IFA on the pile. If he can stay at SS all the better, cause we have a ton of high upside OF's in the lower minors. I believe the Yanks will be signing some more IFA's if they have haven't already. I'll let you know as I find out. Go Yanks!

Good. The challenge may still be how to bridge the gap until the younger high end prospects are ready if/when a ML need arises over the next few years.

Hairston signed with the Pads. Yet another bullet dodged.

I wish Hairston luck, but breath a sigh of relief.

That is the challenge, Rich, and one I keep reminding them of.

Hope all the money saved from not getting Cole, Inoa, Sano and Chapman will go towards more guys like these.

Off topic, but I'm really hoping the Yankees and Damon can work something out.

Seems like they're waiting for Damon to initiate it.

Phil is Cash really that in love with Crawford? Once he loses his speed the other 4 tools will diminish with it.

Not to my knowledge. Who says he is?

I know in the past Michael Kay has made that point numerous times that the Yanks really want him. Which had me wondering if that's why they are looking to patchwork LF this year..

Don't overlook the possibility that the Yankees' target next year will be Mauer.

Mauer will be re-signed by the Twins some time in the next several weeks.

I don't think Cash tells Michael Kay things off the record, though Girardi might. And Girardi ain't the GM.

I'd rather target Cliff Lee. (Had the Yankees signed Chapman, that would be a different story.) I'd like to see if Montero can man the catcher position.

I think the Yankees will keep LF open for Jeter.

*Keep LF open long-term, that is.

The Twins are going to commit $200+m?

If truly great players are available, the Yankees have to be bidders.

I had thought Jeets would move to CF, and Curtis to LF. I do agree with you Mike it does seem like LF is been held open for someone else.

I agree with you Phil, Mauer will get re-signed by the Twinkies he is their franchise. For some odd reason he makes it to FA expect an all out war to sign him.

If we added Lee? with Joba and Phil's development and AJ, and CC our staff would be set firmly entrenched for years to come.

I think there is a lot of risk to investing huge money in multiple starters over age 30.

They should be growing their own pitchers and signing/trading for other team's position players until the farm system matures.

CC has an opt-out clause. We need to prepare in the event that he uses it and then wants a deal into his 40s.

Mike

I think that's a reason to ensure that they develop Hughes, Joba, and maybe Brackman as starters.

At 6:08 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Mauer's gonna give them a discount, too.

I'm more concerned with the farm than I am with future FA classes. We have to develop starters. We have to keep growing relievers and we also have to grow more impact bats.

Not that we will ever stop signing premium FA's, but the less we sign will give us more draft picks which will allow us the chance to develop more players Phil speaks of.

At 7:21 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

See, it would have been better if we had recommitted to the farm 2 years earlier, or never let it go South to begin with.

At 8:09 PM, Blogger Rich said...

The economy has really hurt them in terms of the draft because they have been unable to offer arbitration to Abreu, Damaon and others because they did not want to risk vastly overpaying them.

Also, their perception of their business model is causing them to under utilize their farm system.

Well, they resisted re-signing Hairston, which means we'll have a fairly homegrown and young bench this year, and they do expect Montero to debut some time this year. There's just some gap between Montero and the other non-catching positional prospects.

It's a big year for the farm as we should be getting some of the injured guys back, and we could see some guys who had strong second halfs or finishes really take off.

I was thinking of how they have become unwilling to give both Hughes and Joba enough time to develop as starters, and how they have become more willing to trade top prospects.

At 9:29 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Yeah, I was hoping they'd give them both a shot in the rotation this year, but I have a feeling, that for that to happen, Joba needed to establish himself as a fixture last season. Not saying it's right, but they probably see both of them as somewhat unproven.

I didn't mind trading Jackson for Granderson. I did object to trading Vizcaino for Vazquez. Though they do feel that Jose Ramirez and Chris Cabrera are Viz clones.

They did sign Moronta around the time they traded AJack, so that's a bit of a replacement. Though I also believe there are a few OF's in the lower levels who could be better than AJack.

btw, Mariners and King Felix just agreed to a multiyear deal.

Mauer will be next.
