Yanks Pass on Chapman

Yanks officially lost out on Chapman today when he signed with the Cincinatti Reds for 5/30. The deal is a minor league deal, so until he pitches in the majors he will not count toward the luxury threshold. And so it would seem the Yanks have lost out on another special arm. So now it's Cole, Ynoa, Chapman and the trading off of Vizcaino. You really do have to wonder what is going on down on the farm. Now, I don't want to go too crazy about this as I did hear back in November that they were working on some other Cubans and late birthday kids, one of whom, Bautista is already suspended. I'm going to wait and see who the rest of the list is, and then see if there's really a problem here or just a series of coincidental missed opportunities.

Cole was understandable. Inoa and Chapman aren't. Neither was passing on Sano.

While the Yankees are usually willing to spend top dollar on the big league team, it looks like they're adopting a policy of being cheap when it comes to the farm. Finding bargains and signing strictly them, when they could be getting both the big-ticket guys AND the "diamonds in the rough." I wouldn't count on them ever being in on any big-name amateur talents in the near future.

We'll see who they landed at the end of the year before we worry too much. On the flip side of it, why would they have increased to scouting budget so much, included more crosschecker and hired Kevin Towers if they weren't gonna try to find the best players.

I can't see why Cash wouldn't have wanted to spend the money, so it would seem that Hal and/or his siblings don't understand the cost/benefit calculus of IFA signings.

I thought it made no sense when someone mentioned this at LoHud, but maybe ownership feels burned by Contreras/Igawa, and doesn't want to be convinced why Chapman may be different.

Or maybe they are actually considering selling, and they think the balance sheet looks better without this outlay.

Rich,

I think what might have happened here is they got turned off by Chapman's refusal to work out and behavior during game six.

I think this because in November they were going after other big ticket items in IFA, as they had originally planned to do. I think they probably got Israel Soto who is Cuban righty who can throw 99. Another SS named Yan Carlos Batista. Eladio Moronta who you know about. The Bautista kid. The Arredondo/Perez kid. And several other Cubans. They were in business on all of them after meeting with Chapman at the stadium. We'll see what they did when the announcement gets made.

Maybe, but he was still with his original agent back then. That's sort of a built-in way to cast aside responsibility.

Anyway, at least the RS didn't get him. That would have hurt a little.

yes, he's basically in the phantom zone for the time being. I want to see who else they got, and I'm a little curious on what they spent. Remember they had a 3.7M deal cancelled with a Cuban OF last Spring, then did spend 3M of Gary Sanchez who they believed was the # propect of the 7/2 options.

also, Miranda and Pena are having very good winterball seasons/postseasons.

Phil I know this is a Yankee thread, but the Giants lack of direction concerns me. it seems every year we let the good assistants go by the way side, or they don't want to come here. Giants should have made Perry an offer he could not refuse

Hang in there, Michael, we'll see what happens.
