Hairston Jr. on a Budget?

So, a bunch of the stories today suggested the Yanks were in deep negotiations with Jerry Hairston Jr. about his possible return, most likely in a utility roll, for about 2-3M. Okay, now we've all see Jerry field poorly, and revert to his norm in September. And since the Yanks are on a tight budget which precluded their signing Holliday or Chapman, is Jerry Hairston really the type of player we want to spend 2-3 million dollars, that would go a lot farther in IFA or the draft, on employing? I don't really think so. Jerry's a good baserunner, and not particularly good at hitting or fielding. Ramiro Pena is cheap, is also a good baserunner and a great defender, though not as good a hitter as Jerry was last year. Though Ramiro is heading up and Jerry is declining. I sure hope those dollar numbers are wrong if they are indeed bringing back Hairston Jr.

chaka once made that point that Cash re-signed Marte because he traded for him. I think this may be the same thing, except Hairston has no upside.

It would be an awful move because Girardi will use him in the OF and he's worse than Damon there. Speaking of which, $3m for Hairston, but you can't find $7m for Damon. Dumb.

I suspect when all is said and done that the Yankees and Damon will settle on a one-year deal with a team option.

Off topic, but Phil, on your last Yankee post... the IFA pitcher I mentioned that the Yankees wanted was named DePaula. Was he the "Cuban who lied about his age" that you mentioned?

Nevermind, his name was Rafael DePaula, and he's from the DR. Hope the Yankees are in on him this July.

Most of the age suspensions don't last a full year. The Yanks may have already re-signed Arredondo who now calls himself Perez. He went for 16-18 in the process.

30M is a lot of dough, but it'll be over 5 or 6 years.

If it's isn't a major league deal, I really don't understand why the Yankees passed.

It was the Reds that signed him. Yet another example of a small-market team going all-out on one IFA. I hope one day the Yankees choose to do that.

They're probably paying him with the Yankees money.
