It's Official!

Nick Johnson is back with the Yanks. Barring any Johnny Damon encores, Nick will bat second and get on base all the time. In Leftfield news, there is no news. At this point, I think the Yanks should either accept this cutrate opportuninity to add Holliday, or just go with Brett Gardner, who was looking like he had some value before he broke his thumb. If they take the Gardner route, they should then take whatever they were gonna spend on a free agent, and use it to help restock the farm, which is dented from losing Austin Jackson and ARodis Vizcaino this offseason. Go Yanks!

I think Cashman is too smart not to either sign Holliday or trade for someone who won't merely be a stopgap in left.

As Rich said on LoHud, losing Vizcaino makes signing Chapman a necessity.

They've intended to sign Chapman since he defected. Changed their whole IFA plan back in July.

btw,

who are you at LoHud?

Sorry Phil, that was actually just me. Accidentally hit "Anonymous."

I don't post on LoHud, I just read the comments.

Talk about pointless discussions. I certainly had one there last night about Chapman.

It was like debating what the meaning of "is" is.

They saved up for Chapman and I think they'll get him.

Guess Gardner it is in LF.

Phil, I keep reading reports that "more and more Yankee officials" seem to think Joba's role should be in the bullpen. I pray this is misinformation.

It's just people projecting their opinions onto others. Everybody starts out as a "feelings" fan. Then, the really interested ones turn into "reasons" fans, by getting into stats, etc. that explain the game a little bit differently than just magic and guts. The feelings people never know as much as they think. The reasons people are always looking for better explanations.

I actually think Joba will be in the pen, but what do I know. If he isn't, I think Phil could start the season at SWB.

Rich,

At LoHud, you said Joba had a hitch in his delivery. Am I to assume the Yankees have identified and plan to fix that problem.

Mike,

It's been an issue all season. From the NYT:

"Chamberlain used the time at home over the break to clear his mind, and he eliminated a hitch in his delivery when he takes the ball out of his glove. Now, his hands are constantly in motion once he grips the ball. Before, with the hitch slowing his arm, there were consequences.

“No command, no power,” the pitching coach, Dave Eiland, said with a shrug. “Two things you really have to have.”"

I watched his start vs. Cleveland earlier in the season. I think his problems are as much mental as they are physical.

Derosa, Nady.

One of those.

I prefer the latter.

At 7:55 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I'd prefer neither.

At least according to reports, the RS have $5m left in their budget for '10 and would only bring Bay back if the contract is heavily backloaded. Why can't the Yankees do the same thing with Holliday?

I know this is heresy, but looking at their budget going forward, maybe re-signing Mariano, despite his continued effectiveness, is no longer cost-effective, especially if he wants more than one year.

I know it's a business and I'm ok with not resigning a Damon, but if Cash does not resign Mariano, he will have a p.r. nightmare in Yankeeland. Mariano is beloved.

I hope the Yankees offer both a paycut. I also hope there's a plan in place to replace at least Jeter from within.

I think Mo and Jeter will play ball with the Yanks on creative extensions that take care of them but off allow flexibility.

btw, the LA Times was implying the Angels were out of dough this morning.
