The Sanchino!

The Yanks just completed a 15-3 boot stomping of the O's that pushed them one game over .500.  Gary Sanchez hit 3 two run homers, to give him 6 in 8 games this year and to remind us of what a huge part of the team he remains. He looks healthy and this could be really fun.  In other great news,  Domingo German looks like a new man with his changeup.  Last year he teased us with upside, and now he seems to be hitting it.  So needed. And speaking of such, Clint Frazier is finally siezing an opportunity: after launching the 3 run go ahead blast last night, he started in left today and went 4 for 5 with 2 more jacks. And the Yanks NEED him. Gardy has given his heart, soul and body to the team, but playing him every day overexposes him.  Sticking Clint to the bench, under exposes him. Let's hope they figure it out and Clint is finally breaking out.  Big series against the Astros starts tomorrw.

Did they sweep the Orioles ever last year? I don't think so, so that's something at least.

Injuries? No problem.

Yankees vs. Astros: Gardner CF, Judge RF, Voit 1B, Sanchez C, Torres SS, Bird 1B, LeMahieu 2B, Frazier LF, Urshela 3B; Tanaka

Wade will never get a real shot.

Let's hope he does, but grateful to see Frazier getting some burn and making the most of it. and Gleyber starting to look like the new SS.

Severino said he didn’t feel good after his last long toss and will go to NY for another MRI.

At 3:12 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Just heard. That’s concerning.

At 3:14 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Supposedly Severino does not feel any pain, but he is “not where he needs to be” and isn’t making as much progress with his throwing program as expected.

Giving Gardner and Voit an extra AB is dumb. They have better hitters.

At 4:38 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Houston did some kind of shit to Verlander, and it worked.

At 4:49 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Kay says some stupid stuff.

Need more AB for Gardner/Voit.

Tanaka saved Boone from even more managerial malpractice.

Still waiting for "good" Britton.

Bullpen has already been destroyed.

Bird was beyond awful tonight.

At 4:25 AM, Blogger Rich said...

They spent big money relatively speaking on Happ and Britton and they both seem like a terrible decisions.

At 1:49 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Teix on with Kay: he loves Clint Frazier, would play him every day. He has unique skills that most outfielders in the American League don’t have.

At 2:06 PM, Blogger Rich said...

There are starting to be signs that they prefer Voit over Bird despite neither being good yet and Bird’s superior defense, which used to matter.

Wade is an afterthought to them

At 3:39 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I think when everyone is healthy you have to platoon Frazier, Stanton and Judge between DH and the corner outfield positions. Gardner goes to the bench in that scenario, leaving one of Voit/Bird.

An MRI showed that Luis Severino has a grade 2 lat strain, per the Yankeees. It’s a new injury that occurred throughout this throwing buildup. He’s shut down from throwing for six week

Frazier misplayed two tonigh, whiich along with more crappy BP work cost us another game.

This is why you should build a pen mostly through your farm system and only supplement it with signings. And when you do, you had better make sure it’s a smart one (Andrew Miller, Ottavino) or, if it’s big money, one for a reliable closer type.

At 6:22 AM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

The Yanks Pen is mostly farm system except for Britton/Ottavino/Chapman? Not really sure I understand your point, Mike....

I was a pretty starch proponent for backing Boone last year and still think he has more pros then cons but one thing he really needs to improve upon is letting pitchers go 1 batter too many.

What is more frustrating is Frazier defense yesterday was beyond poor. Per Statcast, 2 of those balls had a 95% catch rate - 1 of them he dove for and the other he let up. The other five had a 55% catch rate - you can’t beat good teams by not playing good defense.

OTher five should read other dive

Holder sucks. Gardner didn’t hustle and misplayed a ball. Romine sucks.

Probably should have been more clear — the more time has gone on the more wary I've become of what they gave out to the likes of Britton and Chapman, for example. In Chapman's case, they needed a closer at the time, so I get it, but I don't think he's going to age well over the final three years of his deal. In Britton's case, I wonder if his best days are simply behind him. Building from within allows flexibility. I.E. if Holder and Chad Green still struggle they can be swapped for other guys easily.

More generally, I think people jumped on the "greatest pen ever" bandwagon too quickly and didn't take into account the fungible nature of relievers that may be showing itself now, although it's still early. I fear Chapman and Britton continuing to decline and them being stuck with those contracts.

At 10:13 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Britton gave them no real reason to re-sign him. And you’re right, Chapman was badly overused by Maddon.

Obviously, bullpens play a bigger role here because the rotation has never been great and as I have said ad nauseum, Happ and CC both...really?

At 1:31 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Romine again. WT incompetent F?

At 2:21 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I’m just gonna assume that ball to the groin is having lingering effects or there’s something else going on we’re not privy to, because otherwise that makes no sense.

At 6:21 PM, Blogger Rich said...

If there ever was a spit the bit performance, this is it. Just a disappointing performance.

At 6:30 PM, Blogger Rich said...

It shouldn’t be this bad because most of the injuries are to hitters and they have been done in by pitchers (starters and relievers).

At 6:40 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Relievers have been a big let-down this series.

At 5:42 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Positive: Voit improving

Negative: If Paxton is this bad, they need to blow up the FO

Happ DFA

At 6:51 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I get some of these bullpen guys have track records, but they’re also relievers, who are fungible by nature. At some point, some other guys need to get a shot.

That Happ signing is looking mighty ugly.

Cashman had an awesomely bad offseason. Not a second guess.

RAB

The 6-7-8-9 hitters: 6-for-10 with a double and four runs batted in. The 1-2-3-4-5 hitters: 1-for-14 (.071) with the one being Gardner’s homer. Voit and Gleyber did draw walks though. Bird went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts and is down to .194/.324/.290 (77 wRC+) on the season. Two of his last nine batted balls have cleared 87 mph exit velocity and none have cleared 94 mph. How many opportunities can one guy squander? Good grief.
