Deivi Garcia Throws 7 Perfect Innings in Spot Start for Tampa

Nineteen year old Deivi Garcia, who's been impressing in Charleston this season, came up for a spot start with Tampa tonight and threw 7 innings of 12K(!) perfect ball.  Guys like this are reasons we should never get too down on the Yanks during an injury abetted cold streak. They're coming, they're all coming and the Yanks are set for years to come.

UPDATE: Lance Lynn was just about as good, going 7.1 with just two hits, 9 K's 0 runs and 1 walk.   Could still give up a run in the pen fails...  But boy was this a huge performance.

So Yanks bats return and they have Cy Young on the mound....hmmm.. No more Red Sox..

Or Orioles.

Obviously, if Sonny Gray hadn’t sucked so bad in last outing, Lance Lynn could’ve pitched against the socks

Is Lance Lynn the baseball gods' answer to Gray inexplicably turning into one of the worst starters in the league?

Hear me out: What if the Yankees traded Didi this offseason for pitching, moved Gleyber to short and re-signed Walker to play second? I think Walker is better than he's shown, he just didn't have a spring training and gets limited at-bats. They'd be buying low.

I like Wade. But yeah.

“@RealMichaelKay facetious or not, I don’t appreciate what you said today,” Frazier wrote on Twitter. “i’m doing everything I can to get healthy so I can play symptom free … so steer clear of publicly calling me out for not when we haven’t even had one convo about my concussion this year.”

Not surprised by Gray's success in the pen tonight. Sometimes it takes a change of scenery, even if the "scenery" is a different role with less pressure.

At 4:31 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Keep him there.

At 4:34 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Gray has been much better on the road than at home. Yanks need to build up his value and then deal him in the offseason probably to the Brewers to reunite with his college pitching coach or back to Oakland.

CC with all that he has done with the organization, this has to be his last season in NY.

Rather roll the dice with a guy like veteran LHP like Happ (depending how he does the rest of the year and/or Lynn who the Yanks have liked for quite some time.

Bird is the biggest mystery of the season. Is he hurt? Is it a crisis of confidence? If he doesn’t turn around by season’s end is he the starting first baseman to begin the season next year?

Then factoring in Sanchez’s offense struggles, and they may have to add offense in the off-season.

At 9:12 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

He's missed a lot of baseball since the end of 2015. Unfortunately, he isn't proving himself to be a long-term solution, and at some point, they need to make first base a productive position for them.

At 9:51 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Is he an option?

Miguel Andujar (@MAndujarPapa) is batting .359 (23-for-64) since the All-Star Game, fourth best in the American League (min 50 PA). -- @BryanHoch

If the Yanks get bounced early in the PS and Bird shows nothing than I fear they might target Harper for 1B.

At 11:08 AM, Blogger Rich said...

How much money will Hal be willing to spend though? I mean they’re going to go big after Corbin and I would think and they are not moving Ellsbury, so we are talking about a $40-60 million increase in payroll with Harper or Machado added to Corbin and other roster improvements.

I have no idea what Hal plans to do, but that’s a lot of money for almost anyone.

Also, in terms of SP, I think the it’s escapable that Cashman has not been good at building a great in 20 years. So unless they perfect in-house development for SP, he may not be up to the task.

It may not matter to Hal.

Sevy still not looking the same. Is this 6 starts in a row?

down 1-0 after 3 batters. WE HAVE NO PITCHING COACH...

At 5:55 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Nice bounce back by the offense...

At 6:00 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Yeah that’s the way the offense is supposed to be

At 6:45 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Can someone please check to see if Larry is up?

Gives up another jack.

At 7:37 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

First quality start for Sevy in quite some time. 3 runs over 7 is good, if not Severific.

At 7:39 PM, Blogger Rich said...

The context is the opponent, but it’s still a net positive.

At 8:16 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Building back....

At 9:36 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Did he call Severino after the first inning and offer some pointers?

In all seriousness, I hope this is the first step of getting back to normal.

At 3:04 AM, Blogger Rich said...

In the first, he might have pitched with the mindset that he had to be perfect because the offense has struggled. After they scored big, he may have relaxed and just pitched.

At 6:59 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Severino looked much better. If he isnt right no matter how much hitting they have...they will get bounced in October.

At 11:38 AM, Blogger Rich said...

The offense isn’t good though.

At 12:58 PM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

They are missing the best hitter and arguably the 2nd best hitter. Take out Mookie & JD from Red Sox and they are going to struggle..

At 1:09 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Both are better than our best hitters, and it’s a factor, but they need Bird and Sanchez, and imo, Frazier, to be at that level.

At 1:54 PM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

Bird needs to hit, couldn't agree more. Hopefully Frazier gets healthy enough to impact the team soon.

At 2:17 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

JD and Mookie are having career years. It's fortunate anytime you get two of your guys doing that in one season.

At 2:18 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Saw a stack of our hardest contact guys. Bird and Sanchez are top four but having horrible luck.

At 6:17 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Someone on NYYFans said this, and I agree: the good think about Hicks is even when he isn’t hitting, he walks enough to where he isn’t an automatic out every time.

At 7:42 PM, Blogger Rich said...

That’s true, and this only my opinion, but baseball overall is too focused on launch angle and I think that negatively affects too many Yankees. I think there are counts and game situations to try to hit HR, and times to just put the ball in play. I don’t see enough of the latter.

At 5:31 AM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

I don't think you understand launch angle and what it actually affects. Generally speaking, hitting a ball between X & Y results in hits at a significantly higher rate. The players are being taught to maximize their swing path so the barrel stays in the zone longer and create the optimal launch angle to increase their chances of a hit...

Putting the ball in play is tougher today than it's ever been due to enhanced scouting and most importantly, a significant uptick in pitchers velocity. A pitcher throwing 93-96 was the exception 5 years ago, now it's the norm. We're seeing 90mph sliders which is just ridiculous.

I will say that certain teams value power over contact, and the Yankees are one of them. Analytically speaking, it's easier to score runs via HR then stringing together multiple hits. I hear what you're saying in that we should be better at situational hitting and while I agree to an extent, those outcomes fluctuate pretty heavily. We lead the league in SF but I would like to see what % we capitalize on with runners on third.

Rich, I also think you're a big trade DiDi guy and I'm slowly coming on board. He definitely cannot bat 3/4/5 anymore and same with Gardner at 1. Here's a quick stat I saw on DiDi: Since May 1, he's batting .245/.297/.397 --- THAT'S BAD and belongs at the bottom of the lineup.

At 9:35 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I know I've said this before, but much of Didi's value is that he comes cheap. That won't be the case next year, and I do think the Yankees could sell him to a team expecting to contend in exchange for a valuable prospect they could flip as part of a deal for a starer.

Neil Walker in May: .294/.400/.490/.890
Neil Walker in July: .345/.429/.466/.894

I'm assuming this is when he was playing fairly regularly? He isn't that old, and if you traded Didi and shifted Torres to short, he could man second since he'd have an actual spring training under his belt. (Rich, I know you like Wade, but he just hasn't shown much when he's been up. I almost wonder if a change of scenery would do him good.)

At 5:53 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

So Cashman and Boone are playing the likes of Robinson and Voit to send a message to Hal, right?

At 7:36 PM, Blogger Rich said...

This may not be their year.

At 8:57 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Is Torres still hurt?

At 11:39 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Will Frazier be ready before Judge will?

I have seen enough of Robinson.

At 12:49 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Just too many holes in this lineup even when you consider the injuries. Gardner is not an everyday player anymore, much less a leadoff hitter, and the fact they collectively couldn't score more than three runs off a guy who entered the day with an ERA around 10 pretty much says it all. They HAVE to add at least two bats to this lineup in the offseason. It's just not good enough right now.

At 12:58 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

They can’t trade Andujar. I don’t care if they sign Manny this offseason, you make room for Andujar’s bat, period.

At 1:30 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I agree.

At 1:38 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Bat is one thing but his glove is less than desirable and this is coming from someone who has followed him throughout his minor leagues and I love him.

He would be the ideal trade candidate if Manny comes.

At 1:54 PM, Blogger Rich said...

With this offense? nfw

At 2:02 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Trade Didi, not Andujar. Lots of MLB 3B's only got good defensively when they were in the bigs. George Brett for example. Schmidt, too, I think.

At 4:37 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Trading the only LH hitter in the lineup that hits for any power (only if Bird doesn't return to form) makes little sense playing 81 games at YS.
