This Week on the Blog

Alright, the Yanks threw another one away after the break, the Giants continued to get organized, the Rangers took care of some housekeeping, and the Knicks chilled in the knowledge that they now have at least 4 pieces. Big happenings coming this week, so let's take a look.

Yankees: The Yanks sent down Domingo German and called up Domingo Acevedo. Acevedo's been pretty good in AA but his K rate is down from last year. The Yanks say they are going to use him in the pen, so maybe talking to Dellin about his breaking ball will get him back on track. By nature he is a fastball - change guy. When the slider was working last year and the year before, he looked like Big Sevy. On the starter side, Luis Cessa looks like he has found something and will probably make German's next start, barring a trade. The deadline is now 10 days away, and with Machado off the board, the market may be starting early. The Yanks have been 12-12 over their last 24 and that just won't do.

Giants: The Giants open camp on Thursday, with the rookies coming in 4 days earlier than the vets. Obviously, this is huge for the entire class and especially so for CB Sam Beal, who's actually part of next year's class. This will be the first Shurmur/Boetcher camp, and it will be interesting to see how they run things and how spirited things are. It will also be interesting to see how quickly Saquon Barkley can grab the starting tailback roll. You'll remember Fassel kind of jerked Shockey around and TC had to wait out Odell's hammy.  Let's hope this is seemless. Crucially, we'll have to see if the line can gel in time for the season. Having gone for Beal, late as they did, it wouldn't surprise me to see them trade for a C or RT if the need arises in camp. Exciting times.

Rangers: the Rangers have solidified their coaching staff and made a good call on Vesey. It is almost strange that they haven't made a trade since the draft, and it's hard to tell if they are just being patient or there's just nothing out there. They still have to sign or trade the rest of their RFA's so we'll see how that goes.

Knicks: The Knicks this week let Beasley go to the Lakers and waived Troy Williams. This seems like they are putting their foot down about athleticism, they'll only keep that which can be coached, like Knox and Robinson.  Thus, Hardaway had better watch his ass and choose his shots more wisely.  In other news, people are starting to discuss the Knicks 2019 free agency plans. Ugh. Instead, let's see what happens this season and try to hit is big again in the lottery. This is more fun.

So there it is. Yanks need to kick it back into high gear, the Giants need health and improvement, the Rangers need to take care of business and the Knicks are fine.

The British Open rocks, btw, have a great week,

Gray pitched better especially at home. Hope he has a better second half.

Love him or hate him, Yanks need him to pitch better than he has. The stuff is there and we have seen it.

He’s a #4 in against a bad team. Suboptimal.

Chapman?

If Shreve has to relieve Chapman your doing it wrong.

Goat becomes hero, hero becomes goat.

This team has a lot of holes.

Phew. I think we're going to see a Judgian hot streak over the stretch...

Interesting that Gray relied on two seamers and curves rather than his used sliders and four seamers. It could interest another team. They another need a starter to regularly go 7. It’s difficult to envision him ever giving length.

Rays listening in on Archer offers.

Another way to approach the Gray issue is by replacing Rothschild. He hasn’t transformed anyone and Gray has badly regressed. At the tme of the trade we hoped he could be better than in Oakland, if he stayed healthy.

So could another pitching coach make a difference.

Unfortunately, this FO inexplicably loves him.

At 8:36 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Gray has a 1.59 ERA over his last 2 starts so that's hardly a regression.

Rothchild should be given a bonus for his work.

Keep Gray through next season unless Gray expresses to the FO that he would feel better off elsewhere. If he figures it out, they have an asset. If he doesn’t, move him to the pen or Triple-A.

He faced the Mets and Orioles. Games with tiny selective samples. You are funny.

Mike

If you assured me that he will be pulled at the first sign of trouble, maybe, but even when he is decent he kills the pen, and if they are going to trade for a starter despite their unidimensional offense, it would be better to use him as a chip than to trade top prospects.

The AAA option ended when his option years expired a week or so ago. That was the courageous longer-term option that Houston took with Giles but Cashman didn’t have the balls.

way any depth.

Sticking with the Yankees, Cafardo relays that teams are scouting right-hander Sonny Gray, and some clubs are under the impression New York wants to trade him. The Yankees paid a high price to the A’s for Gray at last year’s trade deadline, but the move hasn’t worked out as hoped for the Bombers. Gray has taken sizable steps backward this season, with a 5.34 ERA/4.42 FIP in 96 innings, and may not be worthy of trusting in a playoff series should the Yankees get to that point. The 28-year-old’s making $6.5MM in 2018 and is only controllable via arbitration for one more season.

They call “sizable steps backward,”,l I called it a regression.

But it’s lost on the parody account poster.

As his recent starts indicates, he has made strides pitching better at home. Trade didnt work out but for what they gave up wasn't much..... Kaprielian is still hurt and Mateo is struggling in AAA. The only one that might pan out is Fowler.

Cashman cashed his chips before they tanked.

At 11:51 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I agree Cashman cashed those chips before they tanked, which is why I don’t fault him for the trade. It just hasn’t worked out.

Didn’t realize Gray was out of options. Probably the best thing to do in that case is to trade him, but they can’t really do that without revamping the whole rotation, and that’s probably not going to happen until the offseason.

New post about the Giants. Keep the Yanks. Knicks and Rangers here, till they get new posts.

I read somewhere that Gray had options left.

Wade can no longer see the field

At 4:32 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

As an ardent Gary Sanchez supporter, that cannot happen. If he is not 100 perfect and can’t give chase like he ought to, than he shouldn’t have been rushed back.

At 4:34 PM, Blogger Rich said...

If it’s going to happen he’s got a hit a lot more

Paging Pedro

At 6:17 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

They’re good but might not be good enough. Which is fine, just don’t do anything stupid at the deadline.

And goodness, Boone really needs to learn when to change pitchers.

At 6:19 PM, Blogger Rich said...

They need to take hard look at themselves.

If Sev isn’t dominant, they have no shot to be great or even very good.

No reasonable trade will fix it.

I think Mike once said Didi is not a top of the order hitter.

AGREE

At 6:44 PM, Blogger Rich said...

One hitter is locked in!

At 6:49 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Correct. Didi provides good value when he’s cheap but he’ll likely ask for more than he’s worth. It’s why I think they should hold onto Wade.

At 7:13 PM, Blogger Rich said...

So great that Drury swung at the first pitch after sitter on the bench.

Boone doesn’t use his best relievers unless they are tied or ahead?

Bring back Girardi

At 7:38 PM, Blogger Rich said...

As bad a managing job as I can recall.

At 7:42 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Should’ve listened to me and not had Didi so high in the lineup. They need Torres back and Severino to find himself.

At 7:47 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Just saw the final out. Again, if the injury is still bothering him, put him back on the DL. Otherwise, someone needs to play the bad cop to Boone’s good cop.

At 8:17 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

I think Romine plays tomorrow.

At 6:34 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I’m not saying the Yankees don’t need a starting pitcher, but watching this team over the last few weeks if you think that’s the only need they have to actually win the World Series, you’re not paying attention.

I can’t remember a manager being as bad as Boone has been recently. Just pathetic.

He said he bumped to Didi because of the lefty on lefty match up, but if your number three hitter is can’t hit against lefties he’s not a number three hitter.

We are seeing weakness with Hicks as well as Didi. He has plate discipline, but his contacts skills (or perhaps his focus on hitting homeruns) make him a hitter that you can’t rely on.

At 6:35 AM, Blogger Rich said...

bumped = bunted

Something is wrong the way he is running, but their problems are much deeper

At 9:59 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Supposedly he might have reinjured his groin in the 1st inning chasing after that passed ball.

DL him until he is 100%.

I’m not surprised, he’s not the dog some people make him out to be
