This Week on the Blog
Alright, this week, the Yanks threw away some games, the Giants showed us what's Supp, the Knicks showed vast promise and the Rangers did nothing. Let's see what's coming up.
Yankees: The Yanks have lost a bunch of games they should have won lately, and the last 3 have featured caught stealings. That just shouldn't be, and they need to cut it out. They're looking a little tired heading into the All-Star Break, so it's a good thing most of them are getting the time off, and none of them are competing in the Home Run Derby. The Yanks really need to get Sanchez and Torres back. Also, it still looks like there's no pitching help that's liable to make a difference out on the market, so they should really consider dealing for Machado and calling up Sheffield. Justus will pitch an inning in the Futures game during All Star Week. Yanks have signed about 22 IFA's thus far and should start trading for more pool money.
Giants: This week the Giants were proactive, spending next year's 3rd to pick up make-it type CB Sam Beal in the Supplemental Draft. They also marginally improved their guard depth by signing veteran G Zac Kerin. Shurmur knows him from the Vikings. There will probably be more movement at the bottom of the roster has they head toward camp. Btw, Camp is just 12 Days away.
Knicks: Woo hoo! If you are not more psyched about the Knicks than you have been in years, you didn't follow Summer League. Kevin Knox dazzled in his first three games before having Luke Kornet and Trier sort of freeze him out in game 4. Mitchell Robinson sort of dazzled throughout the 5 games and, I believe lead the SL in PER. It's increbily clear that the Knicks got 2 pieces instead of one during the draft. That stroke of luck or whatever you want to call it advanced the Knicks rebuild. If the Knicks can get another lottery pick, that could put them over the top, not even including adding a free agent or two, which I'm not sure they'll need.
Rangers: Rob O'Gara, who's not very good, just accepted his qualifying offer from the Rangers. Early this week they also added veteran tough guy, Cody McLeod. Neither moves qualifies as doing anything, and the Rangers seem like they'll be young, low on skills, and headed back to another lottery of their own. They didn't have the play right away luck the Knicks had in their draft. But the long game is okay in the rebuild and their luck will come as long as they don't try to rush.
So there it is, the Yanks need a break, the Giants better get ready, the Knicks have HOPE, and the Rangers aren't doing anything right or wrong and that's okay. Have a a great one, peeps.

Big win!
Definitely.
All their starters to this point have been touched up by the Cleveland offense. So think wr have to view German’s outing in that context.
If this kid stays healthy and focused, there is a chance that his availability to them in the 2nd round could be the best thing that happened to them in a ridiculously long time.

Almost inexplicably, I recently read that the SFG offered Cashman Samardzija and his 63 ERA+.
The Giants have placed right-hander Jeff Samardzija on the disabled with inflammation in his pitching shoulder, Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group was among those to report.
Tanaka pitched better in this series than any of their other starters.
Green sucking.
How good is Green?
I’m becoming more convinced that Boone sucks
Fully convinced.
He seems to have a tendency to leave guys in way too long.
So Jack Curry knows Green has trouble in 2nd innings. Boone and Rothschild not really.
Boone admits that Green is too FB reliant but all hands on deck and ...
Frazier optioned.
Boone should be too.
They obviously want Frazier to play in games.
They need hitters who hit for AVG. The absence of such is why their offense is so in inconsistent.
It's the pitching that's been more inconsistent.
Samchez will be back soon and Torres not far behind him.
Not true. They are 10th in AVG. Boston is 1st.
And note thsy you have repeatedly dissed Sanchez.
Knew they needed the break. Sanchez hit a bomb in his first rehab game.
Oh and the Yankees are 2nd in ERA
CLEVELAND — One day after a person with knowledge of the Manny Machado situation told The Post the Yankees aren’t interested in dealing any of their high-end prospects, another voice chimed in Sunday saying the Yankees have offered players from their top-10 prospect lis
t.
Yanks are 1st in BP ERA but 6th in SP ERA. 2nd overall in team ERA.
Houston, Cleve and Boston round out the top 3 in SP and they all just happen to be in 1st place.
Sanchez is an overall better catcher than Romine or Higgy.
Wow Thats Crazy...
SWB BP is better then many in MLB right now..
Yet the Yankees have a much better record than Cleveland.
Th problem is Gray, yet you continually make excuses for him, included blaming Sanchez.
Guess Yanks should move to the central then....
Problem is BOTH Gray and German as they are both in the same boat. One will be in AAA in about 2 weeks.
Some putchers work better with catchers. Not a personal thing I am sure.
The Knicks waived Tory Williams and are now at 15 contracts. The Rangers came to terms with John Gilmour on a new one year deal.
No German, like almost every developing SP is acclimating to MLB. You really can’t distinguish between the two?
Gray sucks with every catcher here most of the time.

On another note, Ben McAdoo is a spineless self serving piece of shit.
Looks like Machado is headed to Philly on Wednesday according to Barstool Sports.
Thank goodness. Save the chips for a pitcher.
Gray trade 3
Or 2
We are probably screwed.
Still want Happ if he can be had at a reasonable price, and I expect the Yankees to get him in the end. Cashman probably wants another starter in addition to him, but it'll depend on the availability and the price.
Agreed on Happ. Prices will come down as we get closer to deadline.
Cashman is a ninja.
As was set on the YEZ broadcast A fourth or fifth starter does nothing. It’s a waste.
Unless they replace Gray, who’s often replacement level
That'd be my plan. Replace Gray, and either send him down or trade him. As I've said before, I'd rather send him down if he has options, as he is an asset, but Gray may want out of town altogether.
Time for Cashman to go after DeGrom.
Frazier, Sheffield, Adam's etc.
Give them an offer they can't refuse.
They’re gonna refuse no matter what. Waiting on the Mets is a pipe dream.
If you’re going to trade for deGrom you do it in the off-season not with the leverage of a pennant race held against you. That’s kind of what I meant about potential GM malpractice.
The problem with the Yankee pitching mat will be Rothschild, and that’s 100% on Cashman.
Also keep in mind that Chris Sale had an 8.38 ERA in the postseason last year. Really good pitchers can be bad over short samples, so a trade ensures nothing.
Hand is in demand.
Not surprising unlike Happ he is quality.
I think Wheeler would be a more realistic target if the Mets would even deal with us.
New Ranger post, but it's odd that the Yanks find themselves dealing with 2 teams that won't deal with them,
Click f’ing bait
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/17/sports/trade-aaron-judge.html
deGrom will not have a good AS ERA for this game.,......
When will Trout become a Yankee?
He's in the midst of a 10 year deal.
So 2021 is a possibility
Happ-less
As bad as Happ has been recently he has pitched better than Gray and Germsn and would improve the rotation.
I am sure Cashman will come through if the price is right for a SP and/or RP.
They need quality.
Happ has a 3.75 xFIP, a 9.99 K/9 and a 2.89 BB/9. Assuming he doesn't cost too much, he'd be a good fit to help fill the back end of the Yankees' rotation. The problem is they would still need a frontline guy, and I don't think that guy is going to be available.
What the Yanks really need to do is win the division, and to do that they need quality starts. Then they can worry about the playoffs, and should have more help for Sheffield and the AAA relievers by then.
Based on his recent managing, Booone doesn’t seem like he’s providing an edge to winning the division.
As for Happ, do his recent struggles suggest that he doesn’t have the mental make-up to pitch under pressure? Who knows, but it’s possible
Giants high on Abreu.
Wonder if they make Bumgarner available if they lose 10 in a row.
Would take alot but the guy is a stud.
OT, I knew the Lakers didn’t have enough for Kawhi. Remember though the NYK could have drafted DeRozen. Instead they took Hill.
Giants don't have anything to offer us for Abreu. Mad Bum is not on the market.
Hand to Cleveland for Mejia.
We need Torrens back now.
That’s a perfect fit for Cleveland.
This is a hope not a plan, especially with Rothschild still in place. The issue with Gray when the trade was made was his health not his ability, although his numbers against Boston were horrible. So if all the sudden he is throwing harder, that could be a red flag for an upcoming physical issue.
This could all be spin in an attempt to gain leverage since Olney often carries Cashman’s water.
And if they really wanted Machado, I wonder what they’re real offer was.
I stand by the belief that nothing short of quality will make any real difference.
Olney:
New York Yankees: They really wanted Machado, who had the potential to be a difference-maker in New York’s AL East showdown against the Red Sox. But with Machado off the board, the Yankees will get back to searching for a starting pitcher capable of credibly matching up against the stacked lineups of the Astros or Boston in October. Toronto’s J.A. Happ made the All-Star team and is coveted by several contenders, but the Yankees have balked at the Jays’ asking price so far -- and Happ isn’t someone who dominates hitters. Executives with other teams have serious doubts about whether a highly inspiring starting pitcher will emerge in the market.
It may be that the Yankees' best hope for improvement is with somebody already on their roster: Sonny Gray, who threw at a higher average velocity (94.7 mph) in his last start before the All-Star break than in any regular-season game in his career. Gray probably will have to pitch a lot better at home, and pitch better against the Red Sox, before he engenders the kind of trust Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka and CC Sabathia own, but the Yankees might not find a better alternative, with a potential ceiling as high as Gray’s, in the trade market.
They also got Cimber. and this article demonstrates the vagaries of being a reliever
I think the Yankees are in a different position than Cleveland because I think their window can be open for years.

Sung Min Kim
Source: #Yankees are engaged in talks to improve pitching. Yankees are pushing Frazier, but teams are more interested in their pitching prospects.
No doubt Cashman will make his usual terrible pitching deal
I’d really like to be wrong about this, but I I think it’s ridiculously shortsighted to pay a premium price for a difference maker at the trade deadline. And to overpay for marginal a upgrade while it will be impossible to have faith in Gray even if he somehow pitched well against good teams over a short sample.
You should make your acquisitions during off-season and sell excess at the deadline at a premium.
Reading between the lines, it’s looking increasingly likely the big “deal” at the deadline will be Sheffield’s promotion.
I can see that happening with Sheffield but he needs to throw strikes consistently. He is gonna get rocked if he can't locate his pitches
Can he be worse than Gray?
Or even worse....German?
Clint Frazier made a diving play tonight and then was lifted from the game for concussion fears. God bless the young man.
Amen to that.
Comparing German to Gray reveals so much.
The Yankees were involved in the Manny Machado sweepstakes before the Dodgers acquired him from the Orioles this week, though adding him wouldn’t have led New York to trade rookie third baseman Miguel Andujar. Rather, the Yankees simply would have platooned Andujar at first base or sent him down to the minors while Machado played third, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (subscription required). The bottom line is that the Yankees “have no plans to trade Andujar,” writes Rosenthal, who adds that they recently turned down the Padres when they asked for the 23-year-old in exchange for reliever Brad Hand. San Diego ended up sending Hand to Cleveland in a blockbuster deal on Thursday.
Drury up.
Feel bad for Frazier getting banged up again. He seems ready for prime time.
Fulmer is on the DL again. If they want him, he has to be deeply discounted because health is a skill and he doesn’t have it.
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/07/tigers-place-michael-fulmer-on-10-day-dl-2.html
F this.
German is trading prospects.
True but if you can’t hit good pitching ...
Two starters with ERAs north of 5. Really hope Tanaka buckles down this second half.
Hicks has 6 good weeks a season. Then it’s all flailing.
He isn’t the only one who is too HR conscious.
11 runners left on base. It’s a pattern. Maybe they have too many of the same type of hitters, maybe it’s Thames, maybe it’s the organizational approach. Something isn’t optimal.
I’m glad Boone is saving his best relievers. Um ...
Happ will fix this.
Have no idea how German got the first start after the all star break. We need Torres back.
As someone who doesn’t watch games regularly, I wonder if it’s not having enough contact guys, which is why I’m warming up to the idea of Machado this offseason.
German was sent down.
Cessa will take his spot in the rotation and Yanks will call up Acevedo.
This franchise is not being run well right now. They have too many self-inflected issues many but not all relating to Boone.
