Happy Kevin Alcantara Day
Today is Kevin Alcantara's 16th birthday and that means the Yanks can sign him. Kevin is a 6'5" CF and was one of the top prospects in this IFA class. This is notthe only 6'5" teenager the Yanks got in this IFA class, and it seems clear that they are eager to start building their own Judges and and Stantons. Not a bad plan. Not a bad plan at all.
UPDATE: They signed him for 1.2M. Btw, that's a lot of money under the current rules. Now the Yanks need to trade for more pool money.

My gut on where the Yankees are right now is this: They are coming to peace that the high-end starter they crave and would pay lavishly for is not going to be available. For protection and depth, they will still almost certainly obtain a starter from the Michael Fulmer, J.A. Happ, Lance Lynn, etc., bin.
Without the ace type, the Yanks will also prioritize protecting the rotation even more by adding another high-end reliever to what already is arguably the majors’ best pen. The Yanks will look to shorten games with every starter not named Luis Severino.
Therefore, it is possible if the Yankees trade with the Orioles, it would be for Zach Britton.
But that doesn’t mean it is impossible they land Machado. No one saw the Yanks coming for A-Rod, and they were mostly bystanders for Stanton until a week before the deal. However, if Cashman’s history is the guide, he will make an offer then wait to see if the market collapses and the ticking clock toward a deadline motivates a must-act team back to the Yankees.
Wade had a great game yet Walker plays? I’m starting to seriously wonder about Boone.
Slugfest
Bird!
Romie’s offense was an illusion.
I suspect that Severino is gassed lately.
We started talking about getting Stanton here last year at the trade deadline. Then it happened in the offseason. We started talking about Manny this past offseason, so I expect it to happen this month. I'm kidding on that, but Cash rarely lies in the weeds then pounces. He works the phones and keeps all his irons in the fire then things happen. Every 6 months or so.
I trust him on position players. I don’t trust hin on established starting pitchers.
Whoever making the decision to not play Wade every day should stop making that decision.
According to Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports, some around the game believe the Yankees will try to trade Gray away.
Some believe the Yankees will consider trading Sonny Gray a year after acquiring him. He has struggled this year, and especially so at Yankee Stadium. Some believe it’s either the stadium, or the city, that doesn’t agree with him, and that he’d do much better elsewhere.
As for where Gray could land, the pitching-needy Brewers could be a fit.
If Sonny Gray really is available, it is worth noting the Brewers were runners-up for Gray a year ago. And also that their pitching coach Derek Johnson was Gray’s pitching coach at Vanderbilt.
CLEVELAND — With the Yankees keeping an eye Detroit right-hander Michael Fulmer, the Tigers had a scout at Progressive Field on Thursday night to watch the Yankees-Indians game.
It’s no secret, even with the Manny Machado talks dominating the news cycle, the Yankees are very serious about adding at least one starter to a rotation headed by Luis Severino and CC Sabathia.
Fulmer isn’t an ace, but could fit in between Sabathia and Masahiro Tanaka or turn Domingo German into a long reliever.

German is the only other starter, apart from Sev, they have that can dominate a lineup.
Some musings...
•I really do wonder if this team has difficulty getting "up" against sub-.500 teams. It's maddening how they beat a guy like Kluber, for example, but get shut down by some journeyman with an ERA approaching 8.
•People will get caught up in the moment with Gardner, but his line against lefties is currently .256/.333/.346/.679. He has a $12.5M team option coming up this offseason, and there is no way he would get that on the open market. I think they buy him out and either let him go or bring him back at a reduced salary, which would be the correct thing to do.
•Speaking of getting caught up in the moment, everyone seems to be bearish on Happ at the moment. That being said, he's currently sporting a 4.29 ERA, a 1.193 WHIP, a 2.9 BB/9, a 10 K/9 and a 3.74 xFIP. Since he can likely be had for cheap, I would still like the Yankees to acquire him at the deadline. He's an asset, and that's something they need on the pitching side.
•And speaking of assets, I actually wouldn't trade Sonny Gray. I know he's struggling mightily this season, but like Happ, he is an asset. That's not to say he shouldn't lose his rotation spot if a starter is acquired (German going back to AAA does him no good), but if Gray can be sent down — not sure if he has options — he'd be worth holding onto with the possibility he could be fixed. Of course, if the team feels it would be doing right by the player to trade him and let him have a fresh start elsewhere, I would understand.
•Here's an interesting story on Didi and why trying to go the other way just isn't a great approach for him. It's clear now that unless he takes a very, very team-friendly deal, he isn't someone you lock up long-term. Right now, he's a bottom-of-the-order bat unless and until he starts walking like he did in April.
•For those who watch the game, what's going right for AJ Cole? I've said before I'm not convinced this is real, but I want them to keep him around long enough to find out.
•Wade deserves another shot. They need to stop trying to make Neil Walker happen, because it's not gonna happen.
•I need a new gimmicky username. Suggestions welcome.
Though the Yankees wouldn’t part with Miguel Andujar or Greg Bird for Fulmer, the Tigers have an interest in Clint Frazier and Tyler Wade.
Frazier is laughable for Fulmer.
Gray’s option opportunities and last Monday.
If they can’t get up for bad teams that’s on Boone, who is showing himself to be not even average.
But hey, send send him down or put him in the pen:
@BryanHoch
.@Domingo_German4's swinging strike rate of 15.0% is the fourth highest in MLB (min. 70 IP). He trails only three all-stars: Max Scherzer (16.7), Chris Sale (16.0) and Jacob deGrom (15.4).

Slime.
I say this because without Andujar they wouldn’t be sniffing first place.

So what is Cole’s deal? Has the move to the pen just worked out well, a la Betances?
Good for them. I don’t even understand the success of that franchise, but maybe it’s just a function of almost every corner pizza place in the New York area been pretty good.
UPDATE: New York Yankees suspend team's relationship with Papa John's in response to company's founder's remarks - tweet
Stephen Drew I mean Neil Walker plays again tonight.
Boone is crazy. Unless Tyler just got traded or something,
I see. Didi has a day off and Wade is playing SS. Walker's playing second.
German making me look bad.
Making us look bad. His inconsistency is why we need another pitcher.
German will be the long man once Cashman gets a SP.
Who do you bump from the pen to move him into it? He’d be better off going to AAA and pitching every fifth day.
What’s Gray, dude? He has been much worse.
Hicks has some talent but he never adjusts his swing and takes an outside pitch the other way. He’s not alone on this team and it’s their primary offensive flaw.
Didi first pitch swinging off the bench. He is the frade chip if facts matter. Torres at SS; Wade/Drury at 2B.
Didi doesn't grind anymore.
Heyman
Offer for Machado doesn’t include Frazier or Sheffield.
I will be surprised if Cashman doesn’t make a dumb trade for a starting pitcher. It’s in his DNA.
He needs to stay in his lane: development and position players.
I’m ok with trading the excess line McKinney for a pitcher.
Yanks looking at Heaney and Skaggs from LAA.
There's been a new post since early today.
