Yanks Make History Again

The Yanks just won their third straight since that weird game Friday after the airport sleepover.  Histoty was made in this one as it became the first time in their storied and staried history that they've hit 14 homeruns over a 3 game span.  And speaking of history, Gleyber Torres is making some of his own. He hit two bombs tonight, becoming the second youngest Yankee to hit two in a game.  Mickey Mantle was the other.  He's also as good as Willie Randolph and Robinson Cano on D.  Mavbe even slightly better.  Judge snapped out of his 0-17 with a blast of his own.  Neil Walker finally hit one and so did Hicks.

Tanaka sort of struggled again, as had Sevy (by Sevy standards).  I hope they let this settle itself organically, but I fear they're already working the phones.  It would be a shame if Clint Frazier became the centerpiece in a deal for another Sonny Gray type.

Marginal roster construction aside, this is a fun team to follow. Torres is a future leadoff hitter by virtue of wanting to get him the most at-bats possible.

Is Tanaka’s issue simply not keeping it in the ballpark?

It will be interesting to see how potential target Hamels faces a good offensive lineup tonight.

Torres may be a future perennial MVP.

Phil Hughes DFA’d. Generations from now, in medical textbooks, he will be a case study in the worst hamstring injury in the history of modern baseball medicine.

He went from a drop and drive dominator to an upright arm tosser.

At 10:43 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Yup, very tough to watch unfold.

With all this Hamels noise:

Hicks, Drury, and stuff for Hamels. I’m not trading anything more.

At 11:46 AM, Blogger Rich said...

The key is not to trade Frazier. If he has incorporated patience into his game, he is an elite hitter, and you don’t trade those when two of your OF are either 35 or largely a 28 year old never was.

At 11:49 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Also, can Wade be made into a CF?

At 11:55 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Sherman takes an otherwise good column and then adds the kind of mediot bs that makes NY such a stupid sports town. We see this crap with every team we root for. Nothing truncates winning more:

Frazier had a .745 slugging percentage in 13 Triple-A games, and if he keeps honoring that lightning swing, he would be a strong trade chip come July. How do the Yankees get that starter they need (if it presents itself)? Well, Frazier and Brandon Drury (.911 OPS at Triple-A) both currently are major leaguers without major league jobs on the Yankees’ crowded roster. Add a Tyler Wade or a pitching prospect such as Albert Abreu, and it feels like the formation of a pretty strong package.

At 1:07 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Tyler Wade is already a capable CF. They'd best not trade Abreu.

At 2:14 PM, Blogger Rich said...

That’s why I favor incremental upgrades, and giving the chance to young pitchers that they have given to position players.

Unless you’re talking about a massive package for a big name pitcher, which risks putting a ceiling on how good this group can ultimately be, in my opinion, almost every other possible target could go through a lengthy adjustment before they can contribute here consistently.

Kind of what we are seeing with Gray.

At 3:38 PM, Blogger Rich said...

The Mets sign Jose Bautista. They’re like the Yankees of a few years ago, except for the two big pitchers, who don’t want traded. So I hope the Mets can stay above water.

At 4:21 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Domingo German has a chance to save prospects tonight.

At 5:10 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

We really don't want Hammels pitching well tonight.

At 5:23 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

German spits the bit. Here comes a dumb trade.

At 5:24 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Not a good start for German.

At 5:28 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

We'll come back.

At 5:31 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Hamels is no hitting us so far. This is gonna be brutal.

At 5:40 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Remember that thing about everything that can go wrong will ..

At 5:41 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Rothschild can’t fix shit.

At 5:42 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

German is spitting the bit....

At 5:43 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

If we had a good pitching coach, games like this wouldn't happen and kids with this stuff would develop.

At 5:44 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Cole?

At 5:49 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

You talking about the Astros strange results?

At 5:53 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I don’t think anything was worth the Cubs giving this kid up for a rental.

At 5:53 PM, Blogger Rich said...

No I thought AJ Cole would have to pitch tonight.

At 6:01 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

He probably will.

At 6:56 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Cone talks too much.

At 7:01 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Didi is a better than average shortstop, but anything beyond that, no.

At 7:33 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Sounds strange but we've had chances in this one.

At 9:23 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Clarke Schmidt threw to live hitters today, Topped out at 94. Not bad for first time back.

At 3:50 AM, Blogger Rich said...

That’s great.

At 7:16 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Looks like Romine tonight so Snachez can rest.

Hamels price went up a bit last night.

German didnt have his command last night at all.

At 7:38 AM, Blogger Rich said...

It only went up if someone thinks a sample size of one is meaningful.

ARLINGTON, Tex. — The Yankees brought up lefty Ryan Bollinger from Double-A Trenton on Wednesday.

They had sent righty Giovanny Gallegos down to Triple-A Scranton after Tuesday's 6-4 loss to the Rangers.

Bollinger, 27, was 3-0 with a 0.90 ERA in three starts for the Thunder. He was a 47th-round pick of the Phillies in the 2009 MLB Draft. Bollinger started the season in Scranton, where he posted a 4.00 ERA in two starts.

He likely provides bullpen depth for the time being.

Hamels has been solid this year and was impressive last night.

He isn't an ace but can be a solid #2 behind Severino.

At 9:41 AM, Blogger Rich said...

His FIP is 4.95

At 10:04 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

If he isn't an ace, he isn't worth pursuing.

Saw this on RAB yesterday and am posting it here, because we need to look past his ERA. (These stats were before yesterday's start):
FIP: 4.86 (career worst)
HR/G: nearly 2 (career worst)
BB/9: nearly 4 (career worst)
H/9: 7.7 (in line with career avg)
K/9: 10 (career high)

What this says is that Hamels is putting more men on base and when hitters do make contact the ball is traveling. That's not a great combination. (Credit goes to the poster Chip on RAB for that.)

In other words, hard pass, especially if they demand Frazier. That wouldn't translate well in Yankee Stadium.

At 10:34 AM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

We are on Hamels no trade list and he doesn't even remotely fit the criteria that our front office targets. I would be absolutely shocked if we traded for him.

At 3:32 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Sheffield back on the bump tonight.

At 4:11 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Needed that.

The next turn through the rotation has to be better.

At 6:02 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I’m not saying Gleyber should lead off, but Gleyber should probably lead off.

At 6:20 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Bird was 2-5 with a Jack tonight.

At 7:01 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Robertson is a concern.

At 7:17 PM, Blogger Rich said...

When does Betances not give up a 2nd inning run?

At 7:28 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

How slow a learner is Boone? Inexcusable loss.

At 7:35 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Once again, Betances pitches a second inning, and once again, it costs him.

Shreve is who he is. He shouldn’t be on the roster.

How good would this team be if it had reliable pitching?

At 4:42 AM, Blogger Rich said...

A second plane delay issue in a week. Who runs this stuff, George Costanza?

At 4:59 AM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Doesn't matter how much offense you have, if you don't pitch well you will not make it far into the postseason.

The bullpen has been taxed outside of when Severino pitches. Need Kahnle back and get some relief help as well as another SP.

At 8:00 AM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

What did Boone do wrong last night? We can't blame the manager for our pitchers not being able to hold 4 and 5 run leads.

Betances was lights out last night, why would you not send him back out for 2nd inning? It's not his fault Romine can't block an 0-2 curve in the dirt. He essentially had to get 7 outs and it cost him. Last year, Betances pitched 2 innings on 6 occasions, and in all 6 he didn't give up a single run.

The blame lies on CC & Robertson. Absolutely inexcusable performance from both of them.

At 8:26 AM, Blogger Rich said...

When is the last time Betances pitched well in a second inning this season?

It is on the pitcher first though.

At 8:46 AM, Blogger Rich said...

The Angels are going to push Shohei Ohtani’s next start back for “workload management,” so he won’t pitch Sunday opposite Masahiro Tanaka, according to Mike Scioscia.

At 12:09 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

In his last 10 appearances, Betances has yielded five runs, all of which came in his second inning of work. If someone shows you who they are, believe them. That's who he is at the moment, a one-inning pitcher.

Yes, CC and Robertson spit the bit, but why were Robertson and Shreve allowed to blow the game without Boone considering Green as an option before the lead was blown — especially since today is an off day? It should have been all hands on deck.

At 1:39 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Could Holder have pitched longer?

At 2:39 PM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

I mean this isn't the post season here guys. It's a regular season game, there's no reason to have Green getting hot when you bring in arguably your 3rd best reliever in the 6th inning.

This isn't a "all hands on deck" situation, you have to trust that your better relievers can get out of that situation. Girardi would manage like it's a playoff game in mid-may and that is why our relievers would be burnt out by end of season.

And re Betances: did any of you watch the game? That run is on Romine and not him, it's a 1-2 curve that he didn't even attempt to block. The prior game in 2nd inning where he gave up a run, JD hit a pop-fly YS homerun that had a hit probability of less than 10%. To reference a small sample to claim he is a "1 inning pitcher" is extremely short sighted when he's been extremely unlucky.

I do agree on maybe Holder going longer but I think they want him to continue to build confidence before going there. He has been trending upward and Shreve has been good until his last 2 outings.

At 6:20 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Betances cant hold any runners on base. I knew as soon as Deshields reached 1B, he would be on 3B shortly.

At 6:29 PM, Anonymous yankyfan said...

Bird will be back Saturday

At 7:04 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I really think the time off affected their pitching. They showed be better.

You can’t not need a bat like Frazier. Keeping both Gardner and Hicks over him does not maximize winning. One, not both.
