Yanks Crush Miami
That was fun. Aaron Judge is starting off like he did last year, complete with bombs, walks and 3-2 singles over the defense. Sevy was back to being Sevy and I suspect it was because he could feel his fingers again. Stanton is still figuring things out, but will. Sanchez is hitting things hard and took a walk. Didi hit two bombs and his walks are close to those of 99. Huge improvement if he can make it part of his game. Tyler Austin and Miguel Andujar are rocking and Aaron Hicks is hitting everything hard. Big win. I think they have 9 more in a row at the Stadium and it would be great to see them get the traction we've been expecting.

If the walks are who Didi is now, he's gone from merely good to a bonafide stud.
Yup, bridled love would become unbridled.
If you get a chance, check out his YES interview tonight. He credits Boone with stressing plate discipline to him. Boone has made some questionable pitching decisions, but the team's overall success is likely far more contingent on plate discipline, since some of the issues with pitching are roster issues as much as anything else.
Gleyber pulled for back stiffness.
Didi, I saw that and had seen Boone mention that they stressed that to him last week. If he keeps it up, he's one of the best players in baseball.
RailRaiders’ manager says Gleyber is fine. Just precautionary.
Kahnle to the DL with right shoulder tendinitis. His velocity has been down apparently so I guess that explains it.
Tendinitis can be minor inflammation or indicative of a tear. It’s not always apparent from an MRI.
Boone talked about almost as if the were giving him a mentally break.
Tanaka is throwing BP.
Losing even one game to this Marlins team would be bad.
Frustrating

“I’m just trying to pitch a little bit more athletic,” Gray said Tuesday before the Yankees faced the Marlins in The Bronx. “For me, that kind of means maybe get the ball and not have as much thinking going on. Just get the ball and go.”
It’s a strategy Gray thinks he got away from over a period of time since suffering an elbow injury two seasons ago, and the adjustment isn’t simply a response to his ugly outing against the Red Sox at Fenway Park last week, when he surrendered six runs in three innings.
“It wasn’t one start,” Gray said of his reasons for making a change. “That was a crazy game all the way around. It’s been happening for a while. I remember vividly after an elbow injury in 2016 trying to change a couple of mechanical things where I thought I was protecting myself, but if you continue to do, can create some bad habits.”
I think Stanton will be fine, and Andujar is showing positive signs, but they’re getting nothing out of Wade and Walker, and who knows if Austin will keep hitting? Really hope Bird’s ankle issues are behind him, because they need him back.
The rotation is my only concern, the current one and others the price necessary to fix as well as Cashman’s choice of targets, given the pitching coach.
Rewrite: The rotation is my only concern, the current one and the price necessary to fix it, as well as Cashman’s choice of targets, given the pitching coach.
Agreed. I’ll add the consistent RISPfail that has plagued this team seemingly forever. I just don’t get how they’re consistently so bad at situational hitting.
Yes it’s April but this is some bullshit
At least Andujar is waking.
Andujar is the reason Torres needs to play 2B.
Yep. Torres would be a waste at third if Andujar is gonna hit like this.
And then Drury, when healthy, should focus on being a super utility guy.
I think Axisa has it right. If they move Stanton, move him up not down. Judge is one of the few players that can offer lineup protection.
Gleyber still at 3B. WTF.
Yeah, it’s like they’re paying lip service to the idea that Andujar is a player they view highly, but their actions suggest otherwise.
Lind and Walker or Lind instead of Walker?
Idiot Mazzeo of the NYDN:
The Yankees haven't gotten much production at first base from the likes of Neil Walker (.173) or Tyler Austin (.262) thus far.

Austin has a 134 OPS+
Anyone who still uses BA is an idiot.
Thair Estrada was 3-5 with a double in his first rehab game in Tampa.

Torres won’t be called up. I almost wonder if it’s because they don’t want to look like it was all about the service time issue.
If he isn’t playing 2B, don’t bring him up.
Stanton moved down between Didi and Sanchez.
The lineup is idiotic.
Big win. Full of bad D and bad baserunning. Plus ludicrous BAPIP luck.
Defense doesn't help the mediocre pitching
As I have said, Cashman’s record of trading for hitters is much better than trading for starting pitchers. I’m very afraid of what’s coming.
Someone said it on Twitter, and I agree: You can fix a bad bullpen during the season. Bad starting pitching, on the other hand, isn’t so easy to patch up unless it’s the offseason.

They could rush Sheffield a little later in the season, and German deserves a shot.
Let's let the weather warm up before we start fretting too much about the pitching.
Gray is the key. I don’t think his issues are weather related. But yes, it has sucked here and wd need to find a place within a few year that is warmer as I age.

Don’t know why that link is there. :)
Yusei Kikuchi has such a large injury history I'm not sure it would be wise to invest in him what it would take to sign him, especially since he would likely favor the Dodgers all things being equal. (He's a big Kershaw fan.)
Bae (Torres) is at second tonight. 1-for-1 with a walk so far.
Gray sucks. F him.
Was worth acquiring, but just isn’t working out. Problem is they don’t appear to have anyone close to ready to take his place.
The price was high imo
Regardless, the rotation is what it is right now, and that’s *bad*. There is no fixing this I’m afraid.
I am so pissed.
If you’re pissed now, wait until the offseason when they throw the moon to some over-30 pitcher.
I’m more opposed to Gray-like trades. My concern with him though was/is injuries. So Boone said Gray’s Velho is way down. I guess hiding an injury is a possibility.
IOW, red flag or RED FLAG?
Seriously, I was dead wrong about the Didi trade; it was a great trade, possibly one of the best ever by any GM if Didi continues to walk, but Cashman’s weakness has been starting pitching. I can’t recall a trade he made for a top of the rotation starter that worked, and apart Severino he’s basically developed no top of the rotation starter.
His really good signings were CC and Mussina, and I guess Tanaka.
So where do we go from here?
I would add Kuroda to that list.
Where do they go? Well, part of this goes back to Hal for refusing to spend during the offseason Scherzer was a free agent. Part of it is the fact that the team likely would have pursued Jose Fernandez this offseason if he were still alive. So now they've likely got no choice but to spend a bunch on an over-30 Keuchel, or an over-30 Kershaw if he opts out. Or they could take a chance on an oft-injury Kikuchi who has never pitched in the states (that would be somewhat mitigated by the fact that he would have minor league options should he fail to produce).
Or, they could wait a few years and develop more arms. They could also trade for an ace. There are pros and cons to each plan, and I wouldn't expect things to work out perfectly no matter what direction in which they choose to go.
