Yanks Deal Nick Solak for Brandon Drury

Yanks, showing little faith in their plethora of infield prospects, just traded 2B Nick Solak to Tampa in a three way deal that netted them 2B/3B/OF Brandon Drury. Drury is another right handed hitter, so unless he's got oppo power his middling homers won't be helped.  He's already 25 and though he is still on his rookie and deal and doesn't created any sort of a salary problem, he doesn't get on base, and we traded someone from the same position group that does.  And if they use him to keep Andujar or Torres down, they're losing a talent advantage at either position he plays for them.  Also, Tyler Wade has defensive versatility, gets on base, hits lefty and didn't cost us Solak.  Ponderous.

UPDATE: RHP Taylor Widener also went in this deal.

UPDATE: Jabari Blash was DFA'd to make room on the 40.

If this is for added infield depth/Bird insurance, fine, but if it blocks Torres or Andujar, dislike.

I saw early today that Cashman said he wants another ring. They’re going to come over the next few years. If you try too hard to get one this year, you may make mistakes.

Update: Joel Sherman says the Yankees are sending Taylor Widener to the D’Backs as well.

RAB reminds: He needs a 40 man spot.

Brandon Drury, career at Chase Field: .305/.360/.533 in 509 PA.

Drury, career on road: .239/.280/.368 in 529 PA.

That's a home OBP nearly equal to a road SLG.

The difference between Drury's home OPS (.893) and total OPS (.767) is the largest for any player with 1,000+ PA since 2015.

That's crazy, and it sucks that we had to give them Widener, too. Hell, Solak and WIdener is a good package for most of the pitchers we've been interested in - probably with another piece.

So we have to make a deal to get a space on the 40.

Blash DFA’d

Wait, a young guy who is better at home versus on the road? Never seen that before..

What I’m about to say is with the idea that I don’t want Andujar or Torres blocked, It must be nice to run a business where everyone involved: writers, fans, try to spin ambiguous facts in your favor.

I saw that the Newsday reporter loved that someone said Didi had an 89 OPS+ before he got here.

I have no idea what Drury will be, but just because Didi did something means very little.

It's a ponderous deal in that Tyler Wade can cover the same positions and more, and is younger. That said, trading 23 year olds from AA and High A beats the hell out of trading 21 or 20 year olds from the same ranks. Still, I think a package of Solak and Widener couild have gone a long way to getting us a better bat or big arm. They were two of the pop-up players from last year. Both from the 2016 draft. Haven't done a post on the system in ahwile, but maybe I will this week.

Chase field has very similar % to Yankee stadium which should translate him to also being a very good player at Yankee stadium.

As with the Didi trade, as with the Hicks trade, I am not rushing to judgements here and will see how this plays out.

This isn’t a deviation from the plan, nor is this a “win now” move, this is a we are a World Series contender and we are obtaining a 25 year old player that alleviates significant pressure from the young rookies.

We gave up 2 guys that were buried on our depth chart for a guy who will help the big league club today and mitigate risk on relying on 2 rookies out of the gate.

I think the Yanks have shown that their top prospects will not be blocked and will get the opportunities

George King says 3B.

Sherman compares him to Hicks, but Hicks is still a tease until he does it for a full season and stays healthy.

As I’ve said I’d like Frazier a lot more than Hicks.

At 6:50 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I don't like getting anyone who doesn't take walks. Hopefully, he can get the message fast, like Hicks did and Frazier should.

At 7:19 PM, Blogger Rich said...

That is the key point.

This is a good move for 3B to start the season while Andujar works in his defense in SWB. Drury can backup Bird if he goes down as well or pplay against a tough lefty such as Sale.

Low risk move.

I thought CC pitched better fat?

CC Sabathia’s plan to keep the weight he lost off during the regular season. Sabathia, who dropped 30 pounds working on a vegan diet, put back 10 pounds because he didn’t think he could pitch a major league season that light. Now, he is eating vegan eggs and potatoes for breakfast and fish for din

6. Drury has an interesting plate discipline profile. He’s never drawn many walks (career 5.9 BB% in MLB and 6.0 BB% in the minors), though in his 1,038 big league plate appearances, his strikeout rate (20.3%), chase rate (30.8%), and swing-and-miss rate (9.9%) are all league average (21.6%, 29.9%, 10.9%). And, weirdly, he struggles against fastballs and punishes everything else:

Fastballs: .315 xwOBA (MLB average: .343 xwOBA)
Curveballs: .274 xwOBA (MLB average: .248 xwOBA)
Sliders: .302 xwOBA (MLB average: .256 xwOBA)
Changeups: .338 xwOBA (MLB average: .289 xwOBA)
Drury doesn’t walk, but his chase and swing-and-miss rates suggest he isn’t a mindless hacker. And he doesn’t struggle against pitches that bend. Maybe the Yankees think Drury is a tweak or two away from really breaking out?

Perhaps this is how the Astros plan to fix Cole.

Astros pitching prospect Forrest Whitley has been suspended 50 games without pay for violating the minor-league drug policy, the commissioner's office announced Wednesday.

Whitley, 20, is considered the top pitching prospect in the game, and MLB ranks him as the No. 9 overall prospect in baseball. He posted a 2.83 ERA in 18 starts for Single-A, High-A and Double-A last season.

As is, Drury sounds like a contact guy who will drive in runs. But his weird spilits and oddball avergage on fastballs makes this seem like an analytics find for the coaches.

Cuban CF Julio Pablo Martinez has been cleared to sign with an MLB team. His line in his last season of Cuba: .333/.469/.498

That on-base average is so appealing. Really hope the Yankees sign him.

It’s time to get back on the Cuban train.

Wade seems to be overlooked by some

Wade is who I want as the backup middle infielder. I think people are too quick to dismiss him based on the SSS of last year.

Pujols worked with Wade in the off-season.

Another LH bat in the lineup

He will almost certainly be blocking Andujar at league short term:

NYP
TAMPA — From the moment the Yankees sealed a deal Tuesday to acquire Brandon Drury from the Diamondbacks, he was installed as the favorite to be the Opening Day third baseman.

Wednesday, Brian Cashman hinted that was the way to bet it but cautioned the competition isn’t dead.

“Nothing has been handed to anybody so the competition will play its way out. I grew up in Kentucky and use a lot of (horse racing) analogies. You have horses coming into races as favorites and I think the experience that Drury has along with his abilities should give him a leg up going into this process,’’ Cashman said during the Yankees’ third full-scale workout at George M. Steinbrenner Field. “But we will wait and see what it looks like and how it plays out. But I don’t give up two prospects that we like a lot if we didn’t have conviction what Brandon Drury can do for us at the same time.’’

At 4:13 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

So, Drury’s advanced fielding statistics at third the past two seasons are... not good. He only played seven innings there last season. Kind of curious he’s pegged to play there as opposed to second.

Level of prospect that could be blocked imo.
