Giants Hire Mike Shula as OC and QB Coach
We'll have to see how this works out. I felt going in that whomever was the OC was going to be a Shurmur functionary. And that what this looks like, but I don't get making him the QB coach, too. I think that will leave them short of a brain, and if the Giants use the #2 pick on the QB, the QB coach either won't have enough time for him, or he won't have enough time for the rest of the O. We'll have to see.
Meanwhile, this does represent a type of symmetry for the Giants. They originally got "good" when they hire George Young, and peronnel guy who had followed Don Shula from Baltimore to Miami. And now the Giants are getting Shula's kid.

The more I think about it, the more I am convincedthat they have to draft a quarterback very high, be it at two or maybe at five depending upon whom they target and what they get for moving down a few spots. But when you see, for example, Garoppolo get the money he got, they really have no choice. This pick can save them $20 million or more a year in cap space for several years.
Anyway, they have the people in place to develop a young QB.
People are killing this hire, but it is
Shurmur’s offense. Who they hired for defense was a big deal to me. Not this.
The draft will be a really big deal.
I agree with you about that. It's not like Coughlin coming in and eventually working in Gibride's run and shoot stuff. This is going to be Shurmur's O through and through. And both he and Shula have vast cred with QB's and run game, with Shurmur's passing cred is off the charts.
When you see Boone speak to the media you can see at least part of the reason why they wanted to get rid of Girardi.
There is a Ferris Bueller line about Cameron being so tight that if you stuck a a piece of coal up his ass it would turn into a diamond.
That’s Girardi. It’s not Boone though.
Shurmur Is showing a willingness to be flexible with playcalling that is the opposite of the mistake they just fired.
Andrew Norwell will soon become the highest-paid offensive guard in NFL and New York Giantshistory, according to one former scout.
NFL Draft analyst Chad Forbes has spoken with one Giants source who told him the franchise is very serious about signing Norwell in free agency.
"Spoke w/ Giants source on Andrew Norwell," Forbes Tweeted. "Said Giants prepared make Norwell highest paid Guard NFL History. And if new Agent Drew Rosenhaus takes Norwell elsewhere (49ers) it would create friction in relationship. Assumes Panthers don't Tag Norwell... But Giants are SERIOU
We'll see. They have a lot to do and will have to re-confiigure the cap quite a bit to do it all.
