Yankees Manager Hunt
Now the Yankees need a manager. Because they played into the League Championship Round, the Yanks missed out on the sort of top industry managerial candidates, but that's probably okay. The Yanks have only had 3 Managers in the last 25 years, so they're not really one of those teams that picks a new skipper every few years or so, like the Mets or someone. Most of those 25 years were taken up by just Torre and Girrardi. But I think the current situation should produce someone like Buck Showalter. That is someone from the system.
Back when Buck took over, Stick Michael had used George Steinbrenner's suspension to rebuild the Yankee system into a winning machine. So Buck who'd come up through the system, blocked by Mattingly as a player, before becoming a coach, became the manager. Stick was wise enough to let the system produce the manager. Then the Boss came back, fired Nardi Contreras and Buck quit.
Right now, the Yanks are back where they were in the mid-90s, with an amazing system, and they should probably let that system produce the new manager.
That's not just a desirable efficiency. One of the problems I had with Girardi's Yanks, was that they didn't grind out their AB's. That's something that's been preached in the Yankee system going back to Miller Huggins, Ed Barrow, and Joe McCarthy, but it was being dropped at the ML level by a lack of emphasis by the coaching staff. I think it would be optimal, to have the prospects learn one way to do things in Rookie Ball, and end up doing the same things when they make the bigs.
From the `30s to the `50s, the Yanks had a ton of middle infielders, but whomever was playing SS and 2B was able to turn DP's at a greater than expected rate. That's been the secret weapon of every Yankee winner. Though when they have a guy like Soriano or Castro playing second, they probably turn them at a less than expected level, and surprise! They don't win.
That's what an effective system can do, like that had in the Barrow Era, the Weiss Era and the Stick Era. That's what they should be doing again, and the new Yankee Manager should know about things like that, and GRINDING.

Hillman?
My vote is for Gabe Kapler --- I think he'd be a perfect fit. He finished 2nd to Roberts in LA and fits our philosophy. Here's a good read from ESPN: http://www.espn.com/blog/los-angeles/dodger-report/post/_/id/17700/dodgers-managerial-candidate-profile-gabe-kapler
Sherman mentions Willits, who he says Denbo could hire, and Paul.
If, as some people have speculated, this is about hiring a manager who will follow the front office’s analytics, they were always going hire in-house.
It seems to be more than that. At least one article I've read stated it was also about Girardi's tight-wound nature. It also hinted maybe he wasn't the best communicator with his players.
I agree there was probably a lot of factors, including maybe they don’t want to pay a manager that much, but I’m talking about what they’re looking for a new manager.
Heyman think it will be an outside hire.
There’s one thing I’ve read where I think Girardi was definitely right and that’s the front office wanting Carter playing more, and he looked awful.
I think it will be an inside hire, because they will want someone who already knows all the kids.
Feinsand pushing Flaherty. He actually gets paid to write about baseball?
Someone on RAB joked that Otani should pick the manager. That got me thinking — didn't Trey Hillman manage the Nippon Ham Fighters, Otani's current team? (Don't think Otani was a player when Hillman managed, though.) I know Phil has mentioned Hillman in the past in regard to the Yankees' managerial position.
I think it might end up being Willits or Paul with either Jay Bell or Trey Hillman as bench coach. I think they really might be tempted to go young, like everyone else and backstop him with an older bench coach. It's going to be all about analytics. Also, we currently have two minor league pitching coordinators and I wouldn't be surprised if one of them becomes the new pitching coach.
Pat Osborn might also be in the mix, after a big year as Manager for Tampa in 2016, he was moved down to Charleston to manage this year, where he was good again, but I guess they wanted Jay Bell in Tampa. Anyway, he's another one to keep in mind for any new configuration.
Interesting note in the NYP (albeit George King) that Hal gave Girardi a lucrative extension in 2013, perhaps disregarding Cashman’s objection.
King seems to have re-established some meaningful post Boss connections over there.
Feinsand pushing Thompson yet another reason why he would probably be the only choice that would really anger me.

I’m wondering if he isn’t the guy who will take Gary Denbo’s position. They wouldn’t have kept him around this long if they didn’t like him a lot.
As an older person, I’m biased towards hiring younger people.
What about Brian Butterfield for Denbo’s job?
Yes, he’s not young, but he has a unique skillset, so exception to the rule.
For the Denbo job, i'd take Butterfield, Hillman or Thompson. They've all worked in player development, and are smart and plenty Yankee enough.
Now leaning toward a young manager, with whoever is not the Development guy betweeen Butterfield and Hillman as the Bench coach.
The NYDN - Naehring is not interested in being considered to be the manager. That’s neutral; we don’t know what kind of manager he might be; but they speculate that he could be hired away as a GM.
What value added does Levine offer anymore?
If they believe in Naehring, after having lost Denbo, and have apparently decided to defer to Cashman, why not make him the president and keep Naehring with a title and salary.
Levine and Trost both need to go, but that’s wishful thinking.
Butterfield is now the Cubs 3B coach
Trey Hillman would be a fine veteran bench coach with a younger manager such as Bell, Pedrique, Paul or Willits.
Gurriel needs to be suspended. He says he has a lot of respect for Japan. Yeah, we saw that.
Agreed. No place for that in society, much less baseball.
Ken Rosenthal: #Yankees sent E-mail to every club today granting permission to contact their coaches for any job. Might need to build entirely new staff.
Venting
