Giants: Okung Paying a Visit

Seattle FA LT Russell Okung will make his first free agent visit tomorrow and it will be to the Giants.  This is a bit of a surprise.  Since Russell is repping himsefl everyon thought he was going back to Seattle.  Why pay an agent to take you where you already are.  Okung was the 6th overall pick back in 2010, the same draft where the Giants took Beatty.  And just like Beatty, Okung has been fine when he's been able to go, but he has missed some time - though not as much as Beatty - to injuries.

Okung is pretty purely a Left Tackle and if the Giants sign him that would almost certainly mean Flowers will become the Right Tackle.  Then, save for another RG being brought in to compete with Bobby Hart, the Giants would then probably take a T/G in the first three rounds of next month's draft.  And everything would be solved - until Okung gets hurt.  Unless he's ready to have a long healthy span, either Pugh or Flowers will end up getting reps at LT.  So it is important that the Giants use the draft to improve depth.   I can't really stand to see Newhouse out there again, and Jerry is also hard to take.

Interesting visit.

Phil

Last year, iirc, you had interest in Gurley. Do you have similar interest in Elliot?

Yes, I think he's a perfect fit for the Giants.

Thanks. I like the idea more this year than last because I thought the OL was too vulnerable not to draft one in Round 1.

I'm skeptical on drafting any RB in the 1st and to be honest, not sure we need that type of RB in McAdoo's offense. I was trying to figure this out but who's the last team to win anything with a top tier RB drafted high in the 1st?

That is a reasonable concern. Most of the recent championship winners have been QB dominant teams, just look at NE, PITT, NYG, and even SEA to a degree (Lynch had been dominant), with Denver's SB this year being an exception.

I guess a possible counterpoint could be that if you have a top QB, can a big RB be more of a difference maker to put you over the top, forcing eight men in the box and opening up the rest of the field for the passing attack?

One other way to approach is that the path to the SB is probably going through Carolina for a while. So what do the Giants need most to get to that level?

Again, until they can regularly find gems in the later rounds, their ceiling could be challenged.

"To be honest I won't need the club this year. I'll be back to the regular JPP, just missing fingers, that's it. Other than that I'm ready to go, I'm fired up. I have no pain, no nothing in my hand. I'm just rehabbing and getting as strong as possible. Even after I'm done rehabbing I'm still rehabbing. And I'm training right now. So at the end of the day the sky's the limit for me. I'm only 27. So I'm happy, I'm content with what I have right now."

Doesn't sound like they're signing Okung. Thus postponing my "The Case for Drafting Ezekiel Elliott" article.

It better not be about his medicals.

How does this guy still have a job?

Ohio State's Pro Day took place on Friday in Columbus. All 32 teams were reportedly present. Among those representing the Giants was vice president of player evaluation Marc Ross, who heads the Giants draft

Schefter

After visiting with OT Russell Okung today, Steelers scheduled to meet this week w/ Denver's Ryan Harris and SD's Chris Hairston, per source
-

He either wants too much money given his medicals/ability, or be has a poor sense of his market value.

I think it's that the teams sense he is just looking for an offer he can take to Seattle.

CC may not make the rotation, which would be a positive for the dwindling reality-based set in this country:
