This Week on the Blog
Interesting week, as the Rangers kept winning, the Knicks kept competing, the Giants won, and the Yanks remained ponderous. We may have an even bigger week coming right up.
Rangers: The Rangers just won via the shootout in Ottawa. It was tied 1-1 after one, and stayed that way. It was good that the Rangers were able to get the win, because the refs screwed them early and often. Kreider scored the first period goal on a power play. In the second period Zach Smith gave Derek Stepan a blindsided hit to the head along the boards. Kreider immediately dropped his gloves and beat the crap out of Smith. In fact, had Kreider not shown mercy, Smith would have been serously injured. After tagging Smith with rights that left him shaky, Kreider ragdolled him flat on his back and climbed on top, where he could have literally killed Smith, but he did not. That said, the refs didn't penalize Smith for the cheap shot to Stepan's head, and left Kreider in the box for 17 minutes. Fortunately, the Rangers hung in there, and Boyle got the game winner in the shootout. I think Kreider has served warning. Rangers have to keep improving.
Yanks: This week the Yanks made one fairly meaningless trade, where they got Pirella off the 40 for a AA pitcher, and then made a ponderous trade, where they sent 24 year old John Ryan Murphy to the Twins for 26 year old Aaron Hicks. So, not only did they trade young for less young, but they traded from an area of weakness, catcher, for more in an area of surplus, OF. And make no mistake, the Yanks are weak at C now with only Sanchez right behind McAnn, and then Louis Torrens, well down on the farm. Romine is a replacement level guy and is not depth. Meanwhile, the trade also seems to mean the Yanks will trade Gardner, or if they're lucky and there's still stupidity in MLB, Ellsbury. They were also said to be listening to offers on Andrew Miller, and after seeing the Red Sox lop off the top of their farm for Craig Kimbrel, the Yanks must be salivating over what they can command for Miller.
Giants: The Giants got more bad news this week when Will Beatty opted for more surgery over trying to play through a torn rotator cuff. I have torn both of mine and would have tried to play, all I couldn't do anymore was throw strikes, I could still channel my strength. So, that's another crucial guy on IR. And there's still no telling when Prince or Cruz will return, if ever. Tomorrow, they face the Pats. After seeing what Brees did to these Giants two weeks ago, you have to shutter at thinking what Brady might do. This team does not have the D to stop Brady, so this could be ugly. Though it still won't undo what the Giants did to them in 42 and 46.
Knicks: The Knicks have been competitive this year. Unfortunately, their coach seems to push all the wrong buttons, rotationally, so their record does not reflect their vast improvement over last year's squad. Fisher needs to get better or get gone. The Knicks will keep improving as long as Zinger, Galloway and Grant keep playing. It would be nice to see O'Quinn in that group, but he's been losing minutes to Amundsen under Fisher's nutty scheme. But it is good to see the other kids play and grow, and it would be great for the Knicks to trade for more picks. Meanwhile, expect for more 4th quarter collapses as Fisher makes all the wrong moves.
Have a great week everyone!

If Daniel Murphy is right and there's a GM or owner stupid enough to give him a long term deal that makes turning down a $16M QO worthwthile, then there may be one who would take Ellsbury. On the other hand Wieters accepted his QO, and I sure wouldn't trade Wieters even up for Daniel Murphy. I guess we'll find out soon enough whose agent is smarter . . . .
Porzingis's bank hook from the right side of the lane is unstoppable. If he is denied position he can fall away and shoot facing the basket. Yet he has no regular role in the offense. They play isolation offense as much as Woodson. I don't get it. And not only is O'Quinn losing minutes to a journeyman, so is Lopez, and Seraphim too. We heard Early had a great camp and he is a non-entity.
This may be tough unit to coach given the changes and pleasing a still recovering Melo, but to this point, it would hard to imagine anyone getting less out of this talent.
This isn't baseball. Schemes matter
I agree and can't believe they don't have more or any set plays for Zinger. Btw, he's the only one of the starters who keeps moving and tries to play the "triangle."
So apparently, Sox fans are hating the Kimbrel deal. Guess it could always be worse...
Imagine if we traded two top 50 prospects for a closer who's stats declined in a park that's built for pitching? I think the majority of the guys on here would be besides themselves if that occurred.
I think we can trade Ellsbury it's just a matter of how much contract we eat. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if we traded both Gardner and Ellsbury and went after Heyward. I personally think this is going to be a WILD winter, so let's buckle up our seat belts and get ready for the ride.
Cashman admitted that he offered Mateo and what else? I cant recall. And also was reportedly willing to take back that overpaid 2B.
This is why I think the Sux will sign Price or Greinke. It's the only trade makes sense.
Totally omitted my Knicks thoughts -- couldn't agree more on Fisher; His 4th quarter lineups + play calling have been ATROCIOUS! On the bright side, our first 10 games were all against playoff teams last year, so I can't be too upset at 4-6 l, although we could easily be over 500 if not for bad coaching.
Also, not wanting to pat myself on the back but I told you all back when the draft happened that Porzingis was going to be a stud and wouldn't be a "project". This kid is a stud and he's not even scratching the surface of what his ceiling is yet.
Still don't know how we got Jerian Grant for Hardaway. That move in and of itself makes up for Phils initial Chandler trade.
We have good talent now and aren't taking any shortcuts, now let's hope our coach figures it out.
I would throw a fit if Ashman did that trade. Heck, I was upset at him for offering Mateo for Kimbrell allegedly.
I want to believe RE: Ellsbury, but he does have a NTC, and they'd have to eat a LOT of money just to have him play elsewhere. I don't think Hal has the stomach for that.
*Cashman. Dumb autocorrect.
In absolute terms, paying a bunch but not all, for younger talent is better than paying all for an aging guy. Why wouldn't Hal do that? Also, if we do a major peel down, we have to do better than when we sold off Randy Johnson and Gary Sheffield for crappy returns.
The big market GMs seemingly have a dual mandate; win now while preparing for the future. That's probably why Dombowski made this trade, believing he has enough young offense because Cherrington did a good job at that.
Similarly, that's why Cashman admitted Kimbrel was an exception with surrendering Mateo, and as we watched Betances melt down the stretch, we could see his short-term rationale.
As we have all said in different ways, the continuing costs of their end of 2013 spending are killing them. The 2014 signing of Headley exemplified the same mistaken thought process.
We must compete every year so if a signing, as Cashman says, checks a box, they opt for it, and decide they will worry about the future later.
The Hicks trade could work out like the Didi trade did, but these are not pieces that are going to determine the direction of a franchise.
So where is next year's offense coming from if Teix and A-Rod don't have similar resurgences and Bird is blocked? Zobrist won't change anything.
That's why they may have to rely on pitching and given the injury concerns with almost all their starters, and the absence of draft pick compensation, Price may make sense, certainly way more than any other FA pitcher, and they can't afford to burn offense for pitching, imo.
Then save money at 2B with Refs and see what OF you can trade to save more money and get some young assets back.
I think if Cashman could ever lower payroll while demonstrating the system can produce cost-controlled young players, Hal would be willing to invest more in youth, since their would be no need for the continual expensive veteran patches.
The problem is that to this point Cashman hasn't been able to do it, but he is apparently here no matter what, so I hope he somehow figures out...eventually.
Hope over experience.
I believe Wilkierman Garcia is the reason why they offered Mateo at the deadline.
Price, Tanaka, Severino, Eovaldi, Pineda
That could compensate for an offense in transition and be marketed against the Mets.
If I traded Mateo it would be for young offense, not a third closer, and we would be stuck with that horrible contract at 2B.
So why does Amundsen lead our C in minutes played?
ST continue to be a travesty under Coughlin.
Eh, looked like he was signalling for fair catch... then they had an illegal block against Herzlich, and that's what sprung it.
Too many heartbreakers this season. 4 games lost when they were ahead in the last two minutes.
