Yanks: Cash and the GM Meetings

So Brian Cashman is either at, or heading to the GM Meetings.  Seems he's already there, since rumors have spread that he's listening for offers on Andrew Miller and all of the prospects.  None of that has sounded like a good plan, so I'd assume that most of it is crap.   A few years ago, the GM meetings seemed act as a staging ground for the Winter Meetings.  For example, the big Granderson trade from the first morning of the Winter Meetings, was originally discussed at the GM Meetings.  But as recently as Friday, Cashman was saying that anything in the works has basically already been broached, which is also weird, because I've read nothing about the annual organizational meetings.

In terms of housekeeping, the Yanks still have to open up spaces on the 40 or get pillaged during the Rule V.  What's more they need a new manager and hitting coach for AAA, and probably some other coaches up and down the chain.   They also have to replace Tim Naehring on the scouting staff, and probably continue expanding it.  And they have to hold onto their picks, dump salary and get younger.

So, still lots to do, but so far,  it feels like it could be a slow rollout.

I saw this note this morning:

It’s been more than a month since the Yankees’ season came to an end with a lackluster wild-card loss to the Astros. Organizational meetings have been held, targets have been established and a plan has been put in place.

Cashman's rhetoric can be dismissed as boilerplate puffery, but if this franchise adds any more aging veterans with multi-year contracts, it's beyond obvious that the GM has sold-out for a big paycheck because based on his statements of 10 years ago, before he may have become stale in this job, he clearly knows better.

The Mets are poised to become a force in this town, and the same old same old will only make that easier.

The only sensible way forward is to go young NOW, and if they don't, no one gets a pass, least of all the GM.

Just to add one thing: I get that they won't go young all at once, but my measure of a reasonable and eminently doable offseason is to trade one bad contract thereby opening a spot for a young player (preferably their own), and giving Refs the same shot Didi got.

That would show both smarts and an acceptance of the reality that is obvious to anyone but a deeply lost fanboy.

Given their fragility, I view these contracts as a feature rather than a bug;

An NL GM added: “You have the best free-agent starter pool in history and every Yankee starter [Tanaka, Sabathia, Ivan Nova, Michael Pineda, Nathan Eovaldi] except [Luis] Severino can be a free agent either next offseason or the offseason after, and they are just going to ignore this market?”

Ignoring it is one thing. Choosing not to over-commit is something else.

How about a more balanced GM instead:

"I think if we're going to pursue something, we have two offensive-profile players already at that position," Cashman said, speaking in broad terms when asked about Murphy. "So if we did any changing there, it would be seeking more balance on both sides of the ball."

At 3:18 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Was just going to post that. Too often, "balance" = defensive prowess at the expense of good hitting.

I don't know how anyone has come to believe baseball has 3 halves. It has two, scoring and run prevention and most of run prevention is pitching. Over emphasizing defense, therefore, can only hurt the true half which is run scoring.

As I alluded to with that other poster this am, there is no player currently projected to start whose best offensive days are ahead of him.

Some might counter with Didi but he only plays because of his glove. That's fine IF surrounded by players with significant offense upside.

If they sign Zobrist, I will TRY to root for another team.

And IF they do, anyone who blames Girardi or Hal or Levine and not Cashman is in denial as deep as the Grand Canyon.

Signing Zobrist would be so dumb that I cannot fathom Cashman would actually do it. He doesn't strike me as "baseball stupid."

If Cashman does trade Sanchez he should try and attach Ellsbury to the deal.

His value is at an all time high right now

At 8:46 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

How can I have confidence in a GM and his organization that massively overpaid Ellsbury, McCann, Beltran, and Headley?

Yet a young, cheap 2B who has the hit tool and takes walks is a problem? Jeez, they endured Drew and Ryan and seemed to like it. WTF?

Sanchez's value will seem low if he establishes himself in the ML. I would take the risk that he can.

Again, they need to add young impact bats, not subtract them.

The one signing that could make sense would be one that decisively upgrades the starting rotation. The entire rotation, except for Severino and Warren (if you count him as a starter) has at least one question mark (performance, consistency, and/or significant risk of injury) and if they could replace a question mark with something we could count on that could make sense. Of course they should also weigh the risk of any contract becoming yet another albatross and of any pitcher they sign having a similar question mark or two during the last years of his contract.

I remain wary of giving up draft choices and getting tied down by long-term deals that run beyond a player's likely productive career, but if the right deal with the right player at the right price is there, it's worth thinking about. My sense still is that we won't get that conjunction and either the deal will be too long or the player won't be worth it. One can still hope.

Shohei Otani just may be available just when the Yankees free themselves from all of the current major contracts. Bryce Harper and Otani?

Yes to both if Otani is as good as advertised.

At 8:53 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

If they signed either Price or Grienke, what kind of deal would you guys be OK with for each player?

At 9:46 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Does Greinke require a draft pick?

Very speculate with regard to Harper, Otani... So no comment.

What I am afraid is that they will double-down on the expiration date. IOW, we can add another three year deal (say for Zobrist) because we are stuck with McCann and Headley anyway so we're just more stuck.

Anyway, if they want to sign Price to offset the growing pains of actually sticking with their own youth, fine.

If it's just another brick in a crumbling wall of veterans, then it doesn't matter really.

At 11:15 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Greinke would have to opt out to hit free agency. I'm assuming you can give a QO to opt-outs? If so, yes, he'd cost a pick.

Price wouldn't, and he wouldn't cost a pick, so I'd probably prefer him if it was between the two. Personally, I could live with a five-year deal for price, but no more than that.

LAD did give Greinke qualifying offer

At 1:25 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Yeah, thanks, so no Greinke.

They can't honestly think that Miller is more dispensable than Gardner. They probably do think that about McCann, and, if so, they are dead wrong.

I kind of think they will trade Gardner, but of what they can dump, McCann is the one is is the most like dump, so I'd dump him first.

So what do they want to use Miller and/or Gardner's money for?

BOCA RATON, Fla. - As baseball’s trade deadline approached this past July, Brian Cashman labeled his top batch of prospects as untouchables.

Apparently, that’s no longer the case.

That’s not to say Cashman is actively shopping Luis Severino, Aaron Judge, Greg Bird or Jorge Mateo, but the Yankees’ general manager is “open to anything” this winter, including deals involving his blue-chip prospects.

“I don’t have anybody who is untouchable, but some guys are more touchable than others,” Cashman said. “At the end of the day, I am legitimately open to any idea. I’ve had a lot of bad ones, either thrown by me or on the receiving end from somebody else to me. That’s what we’re here for; to throw a lot of crap out there and see what sticks.”

At 7:25 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

So Cashman wants to trade Gardner for a pitcher.

He is also reportedly willing to discuss trading position prospects that he has, to his credit (even though it has taken so long), developed, which is idiotic, if true.

He must be so envious of the pitching development job the Mets have done that he has been unable to do for so long. That's why he should hire, as I have said before, Paul DePodesta.

But he won't. Same old. Same old. And Hal apparently doesn't care.

@YESNetwork: Yankees acquire RHP Ronald Herrera from Padres in exchange for INF Jose Pirela https://t.co/9gqgpkjaJf https://t.co/F2wyphjEUH

Don't know anything about Herrera, but I hope Pirela gets a real shot with the Padres. Good luck to him.
