Yanks: Moving Deck Chairs

The Yanks have apparently promoted Alan Cockrell to Hitting Coach, and promoeted Marcus Thames to be his assistant.  There was a lot of talk about Thames being the junior partner of the hitting coaches last year, but it looks like he finall is.  I believe he homered off of Randy Johnson in his first MLB AB, back when it was a badass thing to do.  I'm sure more coaching and exec moves are on the way.

Hitting coaches might help at the margins, and since Refs mentioned AC's contribution, fine.

The tough decisions all remain. It's time to be bold and courageous instead of continually appealing to the lowest common denominator of the fanbase.

Stop the win-non bullshit and start implementing real plan to win multiple championships.

That means Bird, Refs, and Murphy have to be starters on Opening Day 2016, not because of injuries, but because it's the smart thing to do.

Truth: Good pitching doesn't win without good hitting. Good hitting can sometimes win without good pitching.

The only way Bird and Murphy are starters on this team if Texeira and McCann are hurt or traded.

Maybe Texeira might wave his NTC clause for the right team but I highly doubt McCann will get moved.

Murphy needs to catch more games next year without a doubt and Bird will get his chance to play 1B on a fulltime basis in 2017.

You're right. Stupid tends to rule with the NYY. That's why they consistently underperform their potential

Dusty Baker? UFB.

So according to the Washington Post, the Nats insulted Bud Black by offering him a one-year deal, and then in some desperate attempt to save face, they hired the Pitcher Killer.

The Nats make almost every other organization look functional if not competent. Fortunately that didn't spill over to my son's fall little league Nats team!

@BryanHoch: #Yankees announce that Brendan Ryan exercised his $1M player option for 2016. Yanks also declined option on Andrew Bailey.

I'm fine with this since they need a backup IF, but is there a team that bends over backwards in its contract negotiations as much as the Yankees do?

At 12:48 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I thnk they want Ryan to stay with the organization after he retires.

At 1:19 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

That's unfortunate

At 1:21 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Like I said, it's no big deal. I just wish they'd stop handing out NTCs and player options like candy is all.

At 1:30 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

They can DFA a million dollar deal any time they want to, and when they gave him this deal, he was still a good defender. It doesn't screw anything up, unless Girardi makes it.

At 1:37 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I'm just tired of the defense-first guys who add negative value.

And I'm tired of hearing about Joey G., Cashmab is the GM. He's been here for 18 years and makes a lot of money. I have to believe he has a lot of power.

At 3:32 PM, Anonymous Stottlemyre68 said...

This is alot better than if the Yanks had exercised their option for $2 million. I don't object to Ryan as he can play all three infield positions, so he efficiently fills the need to have infield backup on the 25 man roster.

At 6:17 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

At this point, it's probably fruitless to speculate how much power one person has/doesn't have in the Yankee hierarchy. I do think it's obvious all of Girardi, Cashman and Levine each have a certain amount of sway, but aren't autonomous. So whatever moves are made or not made, I think it's fair game to attribute it to everyone, as we don't have an insight to the inner workings and which person advocates which specific move(s).

New Yanks hitting coach Alan Cockrell says Brett Gardner was hampered throughout 2015 by a wrist injury from early-season HBP

I'd hate to start calling him "Brittle Brett," but it seems like he (and Ellsbury) are constantly banged up, with it affecting their performance drastically. Hasn't Gardner had problems with that wrist in the past?

At 3:40 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Gardner and Ellsbury have been hurt far too often to say: "We are counting on them staying healthy next year..."

But that's pretty much what Cashman is saying.

If it's posturing to position themselves for a trade, fine.

If not, holy shit, he's clueless.

Andrew Marchand would go three years for Zobrist but not four...

Stupid as any caller ever.

Seriously, I am concerned about having to watch even the existing declining veterans when they have young options that can be good and exciting, and yes, probably uneven, but so what?

The are in danger of losing fan $ to the Mets for the first time since the very early 90s.

Does Hal know? Does he care? What is his GM recommending behind closed doors? Bold ideas or a defense of the failed model?

At 10:01 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

No QO for Crap, Young or Drew!!!

More seriously, the Mets extended one to Murphy, so that should rule him out for any team given that he isn't very good and is a homophobe.

At 11:23 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

So the Padres are reportedly making a QO to IPK.

$15.8m for a pitcher whose ERA+ over the last three years are: 76, 93, 85

Money for nothing and your chicks for free.

At 11:37 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Hate that for Kennedy because teams will likely stay away from him if he declines. If I'm him, I accept.

Like I said above, it would be monumentally stupid to repeat the same mistakes of two offseasons ago by signing Zobrist.

At 12:47 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

The "thinking" behind a Zobrist signing would probably ensure that Mets will be the dominant team in this town for a while.

At 1:07 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Just to be clear, I don't think they will sign Zobrist. My concern is a trade.

I don't know what Refs has to show to get a chance at 2B full-time. He has exactly the contact and patience skills they need to diversify the lineup, and his defense is goof enough, much better than Ackley, which I grant is a very low bar.

Now, if Ackley can play 3B, despite his lack of plate patience, I'm all in. Screw Headley.

At 1:58 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Didn't Ackley show plate discipline in the minors?

At 2:02 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Not sure, but he's 27 now.

At 3:20 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

btw, Props to CC for confronting his addiction. I struggled with something similar when I was a lot younger than he is, but I didn't have his money (still don't ;) ), and by that I mean he could have remained in denial because he doesn't need to get clean to have a secure future.

At 4:25 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Aye, hope it's all behind him now. He's always come across as a genuine good dude since joining the Yankees.

A few predictions from mlbtraderumors.

2. Jason Heyward – Yankees. Ten years, $200MM. Since his 2010 rookie season, Heyward has quietly been one of the game’s best outfielders. He’s an excellent defender and baserunner with a solid on-base percentage and some pop. Heyward hit a career-high 27 home runs in 2012, but only 38 in the three seasons since. He doesn’t have the typical power output of a $200MM player, but his all-around game makes him a sabermetric darling with six wins above replacement this year. A very long term and an opt-out clause are on the table for Heyward because he broke into the Majors at age 20, and is now just 26. The Cardinals will try to convince Heyward to stay, but teams like the Angels, Yankees, White Sox, and Astros could make a play. For more on Heyward, click here.

21. Ben Zobrist – Yankees. Three years, $51MM. Baseball’s Swiss Army knife would fit with more than a dozen teams, as he can handle second base and the outfield corners and even back up at shortstop. Offensively, Zobrist contributes a strong OBP and good pop, plus he’s ineligible for a qualifying offer because he was traded to the Royals. He’ll be vying for a fourth year, and Victor Martinez did get that, but with Zobrist turning 35 in May it’s still a tough sell. He remains a good fit for the Royals, while the Yankees, Orioles, Padres, Astros, and White Sox could also make sense.

At 4:45 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

They actually think Hayward is getting that much? Then again, it only takes one dumb team...

If those two things come to pass, I'm done following this team until new management takes over.

No on Zobrist.

At 10:48 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

One rival official, talking about the trade market on Friday, said, "Sounds like the Yankees are shopping everyone." Another concurred, adding, "With the exception of (Luis) Severino."

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he does not anticipate trading any of his three top young players -- pitcher Severino, first baseman Greg Bird or outfielder Aaron Judge. But the GM acknowledged that he was being aggressive and creative in his early discussions.

"I'm open to anything," Cashman said. "I'm always open to anything. I'm not afraid."

At 10:49 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Trade Girardi for a sniveling fool to be named later.

At 11:08 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Cashman's comments may be his usual self-promoting bs, but think about it, unless he trades veterans with bad contracts (or Hal swallows them) they have one opening, and not many 2B offer a better risk-reward as Refs at such a low contract price.

So unless he means adding a prospect to induce a team to take one of the terrible contracts so another prospect gets an opportunity, this probably cannot be good UNLESS he can trade Gardner AND McCann to open up spots for prospects.

That seems unlikely, but I will hope that the obvious reality to do it somehow dawns on him.

My fear is that Sanchez goes because he can't admit his mistake with McCann.

At 1:28 PM, Anonymous Bob said...

I think either Murphy or Sanchez goes this offseason. Hope its Murphy.

At 3:32 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Either would be suboptimal in almost any case because McCann is in a deep decline.

At 6:25 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

If anyone goes for the sake of going, it needs to be McCann.

At 5:00 AM, Anonymous Bob said...

Yanks aren't moving McCann especially for a team hurting for offense. He will catch less games for sure so he doesn't have another 2nd half dissapearing act like this year.

At 7:26 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

They are hurting for offense because they rely on people like McCann.

Until they start relying on players whose best days are ahead of them rather than behind them, they will continue to hurt for offense.

At 9:06 AM, Anonymous Stottlemyre68 said...

I don't want to see Murphy go because he is a good defensive catcher, which you want in a backup so that your pitchers are comfortable when you're giving your No. 1 a rest. Plus Murphy has shown that he can hit at the major league level. I also don't want to see them trade Sanchez, because he seems to be figuring things out and could be another outstanding bat for the future team. The Yanks ducked a bullet when they traded Montero and he went south, and I suspect a good part of that was bad attitude. They may not be so lucky if they trade Sanchez. Given Torrens's injury, they can't count on him for anything right now.

My vote would be to put up with the logjam until the real causes of the logjam (Texeira's and ARod's contracts) have been cleared. Then you have a chance of a lineup including Judge, Bird, and Sanchez, with Sanchez moving between C and DH.
