Yanks Swap Pirela for A Ball Arm

In a move to create space on the 40, I guess, the Yanks have traded Jose Pirela for 20 year old A Ball pitcher Ronald Herrera.   Herrera was a 2011 IFA signing for the A's, who ended up in the Padre system.  His numbers have not been terribly impressive, but we still might find some reason they took him, instead of someone else for Pirela.

From the NY Post link Lawyer provided in the previous thread:
"The Yankees are particularly looking for high-end starting pitching that they control for seven years because all of their current starters, except Luis Severino and Adam Warren, can be free agents after either the 2016 or 2017 campaign."

I didn't realize this about the collective, and it somewhat changes my opinion on trading for pitching vs. hitting. There isn't a single starter who's scheduled to hit free agency over the next two seasons that I'd re-sign. (This might change in regard to Pineda going forward, but for now, he's just too inconsistent.) With this in mind, I would be OK trading Gardner for a starter ***assuming this meant the likes of Mason Williams/Slade Heathcott would get a shot at left field.***

I would NOT package Bird, Judge, Refsnyder or Sanchez for a starter. The team is gonna need those guys to offset the aging, one-dimensional bats.

To my first point, I meant to say, I don't want them trading Gardner and then signing Jason Hayward to a long-term deal.

It will be interesting to see what they do, but it does seem likely Gardner will be traded.

Herrera is just 5'10".

I hate trading position players for fragile pitchers but Gardner is fragile.

The last trade with SD worked out poorly

Yanks trade Murphy - I'm not familiar enough with Hicks but initial guess is he replaces Chris Young's right handed platoon; which doesn't feel like they sold high on an above average catching prospect. Those should net more than platoon outfielders.

Steve, what are you talking about?

Yankees Traded John Ryan Murphy for Aaron Hicks of the Twins

Initial thoughts: I don't like it. Like Steve said, they didn't get a good enough return. All over Twitter MLB writers are referencing "industry sources" saying it's believed Murphy could start. That should get you more than a replacement for Chris Young.

Versus lefties the last three years: 272/.360/.447/.807
Versus lefties last year: .304 .372/ .490/.862

Of course, if this guy turns into Adams Jones the sequel, that's a different story. But for now, I'm not feeling it.

They better keep Samchez now

I'd like to think this means Sanchez is now the BUC but we all know how obsessed this team is with defense, especially behind the plate, so I'll believe that when I see it.

"I think Gary Sanchez can play in the major leagues this year" Cashman said in response to the trade. You would hope that means he will be up; and not just in September.
