Yanks All New Pulaski Team

So, the all new Pulaski Yanks start playing Appy League games tomorrow and the Yanks have been curteous enough to release a roster for us to look at before the games begin.

The roster to start the season is comprised mostly of picks from the three most recent drafts.  It's a rookie league, but since the other two rookie league teams play out of the Yankee Complex in Tampa, it's interesting to see whom they're sending farther away.

Let's look at the pitchers:

RHP Drew Finley and RHP Simon De La Rosa are probably the big ticket starters, unless one of the college arms like RHP'S Brody Koerner, Garrett Mundell or David Sosebee surprises.  Though, they also might be relievers, and we might see piggy-backing anyway.  Other pitchers include LHP Nestor Cortes - who is the only LEFTY on the team to start the season - and righties, Corey Holmes, Adonis Rosa, Alex Robinett (the kid from Army), Melvin Moria, Jhon Morban, Jonathan Padilla, William Gabay, and Eduardo Rivera. It will be interesting to see how they get these pitchers organized.

The infield consists of Gosuke Katoh at 2B.  Gosuke has really struggled at the plate for most of the last season and a half, and hopefully, a change of scenery will get him going.  He's a guy that knows the strikezone and walks but hasn't hit like he did in the GCL back in his draft year, but for a six week period in the second half of last year.  It's definitely all in his head, and he needs a fresh start.

The SS will be 19 year old Korean sensation Hoy Jun Park.  He was the big 18 year old among the scores of 16 year olds the Yanks signed last 7/2.  It will be interesting to see how he does, and it's interesting that they're letting him play away from Tampa.

Jose Javier is the other SS, but we'll see how much he plays.  Billy Fleming is the other 2B on the team, and he could take AB's away from Katoh, he was a bit of an over age signing who'd been injured a lot during development but who played well last year.

Kane Sweeney who was drafted 2 weeks ago will be the first baseman and Alan Valerio will play 3B. The infield is a mix of prospects, sleepers and one or two reclamations.

They are only listing 4 OF's tonight and that's probably wrong, but they have Kendall Coleman, the toolsy kid who is oft injured,  Frankie Frias, the slight over age guy who showed in the GCL last year, Nathan Mikolas, the kid with a good swing but the so so results, and Carlos Vidal.    Everyone has stuff to prove in this group.   Everyone.

The catchers are Matt Walsh - a recent UDFA signing who had a great career at Franlin Pierce. Joining Matt will be Austin Afenir who was drafted this month, and Jesus Aparicio, who's been a second or third tier Yankee catching prospect for years.

This doesn't seem like a particularly intriguing collection of talent.  But last year's monster IFA class will keep coming over and they have at least established another development spot in Pulaski.   We'll see who the must follows are.

Nova is back. Can someone please explain to me why Capuano is still on the team?

5 Million bucks.

Good write-up.

Crap may well be Girardi's fuck buddy (NTTAWWT).

They have a young pieces to be more than a pack team, for the first time in like 5 years, if they would just stop signing players like Crap, Drew, and perhaps most especially Headley, who may be the worst offseason signing because it is a mindboggling four year commitment

I don't care what his other offers were because their stupidity doesn't negate Cashman's.

Phil if you have time can you recap where all the big IFA signings of last year currently are playing? I don't see Dermis Garcia on any roster

He's in a rehab group right now. I'll write up the GCL stuff tomorrow. There was too much other Yankee news over the past few days.

Teix got a cortisone shot in his neck.

Btw, Billy, just at first glance a lot of the big IFA's from last year are already over.

Dermis is one guy I'll follow closely, which I don't usually do with minor leaguers until they're high A at least.

Billy, earlier I looked at the wrong list. Most of last year's big IFA's are still in the DR.

I really don't understand the need for so many roster moves, but if they are bringing up Pirela, f'ing Ryan better not start at 2B. It sometimes seems they want to remain mediocre forever.

Yankees bring back Mitchell and Pirela

The Yankees have recalled RHP Bryan Mitchell and INF Jose Pirela from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

To make room on the roster, they have placed INF Stephen Drew on the paternity list and optioned OF Ramon Flores back to AAA.

Pirela's starting. Beltran has also gotten his OPS+ up to 106, which is a good sign. Still, given how awful his defense is and that A-Rod has locked down the DH spot, I'd like them to try and move him at the deadline.

So Pirela, but the ever so sucky Young. I would DFA him yesterday.

Brett Gardner CF

Chase Headley 3B

Alex Rodriguez DH

Brian McCann C

Carlos Beltran RF

Garrett Jones 1B

Chris Young LF

Didi Gregorius SS

Jose Pirela 2B

LHP CC Sabathia

I don't know what genius is responsible, but it's ridiculous. How is a young pitcher supposed to surmount a learning curve while being yo yo'd?

“Because of some of our concerns about the length that we get, we kind of rotate people in and out here a lot,” manager Joe Girardi said. “And it doesn’t mean we don’t believe in them; we’re doing it to protect the arms of everyone. The challenges are maybe finding a role for a couple of guys. We’ve kind of settled in on who our seventh-, eighth- and ninth-inning guy is. We’ve looked for a right-hander to help us in those situations, and that has been ever-changing, and that’s what we’re looking for.”

As for Beltran, I really don't care what he does. He is exactly the type of player the don't need: old, immobile, injury-prone...

Going to check out Pulaski Yankee's next week. I hear it's a no frills environment.

CC cannot stay in the rotation despite making CEO money.

Man this team is so Jekyll and Hyde. (sp?)

Which removes one supposed reason not to play young players.

How is Terry Collins doing a bad job while Goofy is doing a good one?

Either Cashman or Girardi are doing a bad job and should be fired. They can't both be good given how they often look.

Girardi says Sabathia will absolutely stay in the rotation. "That's what we're paying him to do and that's what he'll do."

Well, at least he's honest in saying winning is not the No. 1 priority.

At 9:49 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

He is a lying sack of shit.

At 9:51 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

And for all these media clowns ehi think they should trade for Cole Hamels, there is no room in the rotation due to all the crappy contracts.

What the fuck are they smoking?

At 9:56 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I get that we should be outraged, but I think it's kind of hilarious that he just outed himself and his higher-ups as bosses who require zero accountability. (Unless you're a young, homegrown player who isn't owed much money. Then they just ship those guys back to Triple-A because they didn't dominate right away.)

At 10:02 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

That is exactly the source of my frustration. They have the pieces to be really good fairly soon, but they are too myopic to see it or worse, they don't even care, apparently.

At 7:55 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Remember when some people used to say that the Yankees can sign anyone no matter what because they could always eat the contract? It's now funny that anyone could possibly think that.

At 10:06 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Unless and until this team completely overhauls its front office leadership, these issues will remain. And with Hal in charge, it's probably not a good idea for anyone to hold their breath.

At 10:36 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Except for one thing. Without Teix and A-Rod, this team would have been in freefall.

That kind of luck can't continue indefinitely.

So unless they wake up and realize that what they have seen from Heathcott, Williams, Flores, etc. must be part of any realistic plan, they will absolutely suck at some point.

And as I said above, I understand the fresh arms thing, but no reasonable person can expect young pitchers to acclimate themselves without any learning curve. Even Mariano had one in 1995.

Also, although obviously I don't think a lot of Cashman, I have now moved to just loathing Girardi, even though I think if either were fired, Girardi would be hired much faster and have more choices of employment.
