Nova Sparkles in Return

Ivan Nova returned to action today after 14 months of for TJS and rehab.  He pitched 6.2 innings of shutout ball allowing just 5 baserunners.  He didn't have his good curve, but he got an unusual number of MF8's  of his sinker and change.  Troublingly, afer he left, the Yanks used Brian Mitchell in short relief.   Ugh.  He pitched a 1-2-3 and Diego finished the game, yielding some runs in the 9th.

The Yanks; however, did score 10 runs without hitting a homer.  Thank goodness I was watching and not listening to our radio team go on about small ball.

Yanks finish the homestand 5-3, showing both the highs and lows of their roster, luck and strategy.  But they may have added back another good starter today, and that beats trading assets.

Ryan hurt is a plus.

This team seems to thrive off hitting other teams' aces.

Pirela had multiple hits, now send him down for a veteran, quick.

Would that be wrong?

If they want a second baseman who had any hope of hitting above the Mendoza line, yes.

Seems strange that Mitchell was limited to 24 pitches. No reason he could not have finished off the game.

I think he was limited to 24 pitches in case Eovaldi has another stinker tomorrow and we need long relief.

If they have to limit Warrens innings I get that at some point but to think that a set up man is more important and starter, you failed an IQ test

If Pirela and Flores start every game, they are going to win or lose more games. So why not develop them? It just seems like such an obvious thing to do

Drew is back. That sucks.

And Chad Jennings ads this nauseating note :
It’s interesting that the team has elected to keep Bryan Mitchell. The young right-hander pitched extremely well today — retired every batter he faced, got a strikeout to get out of a jam in the seventh — but he’s previously been used almost exclusively as rotation insurance and as an emergency long man. Keeping him around even with Chris Capuano rested seems to suggest Mitchell might finally get a look as a typical right-handed reliever.

With Nova back, Capuano literally serves no purpose. But with this team's decision makers, he'll be here through September.

As I think I once mentioned, it is sometimes said that great players didn't make good coaches because they can't understand what was like to struggle. Goofy, on the other and, likes players whi suck the way he did, so Capuano

I have no problem with Mitchell getting his feet wet in the MLB as a bullpen piece -- a lot of starters were developed this way.

I think all of us have such awful memories of Joba's mishandling that we're biased against anything resembling that. I still maintain Joba's injury zapping him of five ticks off his fastball is what did him in, ultimately.

Warren seems to be doing fine having begun that way. I hope they don't send him to the pen in favor of Sabathia, but I'm guessing that's exactly what they do.

Yup, Hughes too. It prevents working on all your pitches and building arm strength.

The have been abysmal at developing starting pitchers for a reason and this is one such reason.

Warren seems to have a good, level head on his shoulders, in contrast to Joba. That might explain why he could transition between starting and bullpen more easily than Joba. Mitchell may be more like Warren.

Hughes was rushed when he first came up. He never really got a feel for his changeup, and that probably hurt him in the long run.

Regardless of their history, they have a chance of changing the story when it comes to developing starters. Unfortunately, their No. 1 priority appears to be money, which is why I think CC stays in the rotation and Warren is moved to the pen.

Hughes had a good change in the minors and you might recall him striking out Tex with three straight changes in the game where he was throwing a no-hitter against Texas and tore his hamstring. That ended his days as a drop and drive pitcher and an extreme groundball pitcher. He just never mastered his change once he became an arm tosser - flyball pitcher.

Thanks for the correction, Phil. A shame, because he really looked like someone where the hype was justified.

He was truly great at young for league ages in the minors. He changed his own mechanics and made himself less.

That's if you view Hughes as a potential #1/#2 type of pitcher.

Even post worst hamstring injury in the history of organized sports, he still has/had a chance to be a #3, but because of the lack of IP due to bullpen use, his velo declined as a starer, and he increasingly became a two-pitch pitcher.

Why risk that with Mitchell?

Petit recalled. He is an extreme terrible player.

There is no bottom to how bad this team is at roster construction.

So Pirela is now the backup OF? Jones is the backup DH , 1B?

Something is wrong here. At least Ryan is off the roaster for a while. I do not wish injuries on anyone, but would rather see the Yankees proceed without Ryan.

At 2:59 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Yeah, Pirela is starting in the OF.

There has to be a better way to run a team.

At 4:08 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Do they not realize anyone with even a small degree of baseball knowledge is laughing at them?

Is there anything Crapu can do to lose a job?

$5m? There should be an MLB investigation of malfeasance.

At 7:36 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Tell me again why the Yankees can't follow the Houston model? It's not like they have to start at the bottom. They just have to stop their love for veteran mediocrity or suck.

At 8:12 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

So Girardi doesn't play Pirela, yet he lets him bat with the game on the line because of handedness over guy you're paying $18 million to; what the fuck.

At 8:38 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Given the reputation of the Knicks' FO in recent history, it's scary to imagine that the Yankees may be even worse-run then them now.

At 8:52 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Judge homered!

At 5:53 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Girardi is such a terrible manager but he's got so many apologists in the media ( and apparently a supportive GM) so it is as if reality doesn't exist.

At 6:12 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Girardi said he was saving McCann for a RHP; liked Pirela with short left field fence. https://twitter.com/gavel8607/status/614265111042088960

This is such a inconsistent bullshit
Fire him today.
