More Yankee System Stuff

Today, the Yanks released Jordan Cote, a big, prep RHP who was their third rounder in 2011.  Over the weekend they had released Hayden Sharp, another big, prep RHP from the same draft.   Btw, that's neither of them in the picture.  That's Jordan Foley whom the Yanks drafted but didn't sign as a prep back in 2011, then re-drafted and did sign last year.  Over the weekend they also cut bait on 1B Bubba Jones, who was yet another prep pick -- and one of the "Sons of Tyler Austin" that was picked back in 2011.

I don't know if this says anything vis-a-vis prep vs. college picks, but it does seem like the Denbo team, even with the extra rookie league team, wants to make the system leaner and more competitive.  It's seems so far, that if guys aren't progressing, they aren't getting as long a rope as they were a few years ago.

While it's too bad that Cote, Sharp and Jones didn't progress, their release seems to reflect a new seriousness and an intent to develop kids for the Yanks, and not sort of keep kids around and in holding patterns just for emergencies or whatever.   Seems like standards are being raised, and that's a good thing.

Btw, the 2011 draft is still likely to go down as a good one as the Yanks took Greg Bird in the fifth, Jake Cave in the sixth, and a bunch of 2011 pitchers are still around and still have a chance, like Rookie Davis and Daniel Camerena.

Aside from the names you mentioned, Montgomery, Goody and Matt Tracy are from that draft also.

I am surprised that they cut bait with Cote so soon. Injuries might have a play in this decision.

I am also guessingthe Yankees will be drafting a bunch of pitchers this June, and if Cote and company are not advancing at a quick enough pace, they are taking up roster spots for these guys at the lower levels.

That's what I think. I think it's about room at the rookie levels and getting guys to be more age appropriate for their leagues.

Btw, 2011 was the time we drafted Goody and he didn't sign. We re-drafted him in `12 and he did.

New people bring changes. Whether or not they will be positive changes remains to be seen, but the bar is quite low.

Olivera to the Dodgers.

Not that I care about him in particular, but the Yankees mostly want aging US has-beens anyway, so whatever.

Let's see if those young Cuban pitchers get cleared.

Doesn't matter if they do. Hal doesn't want to get anyone who isn't "marketable."

At 3:47 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Who are they marketing to though?

The nursing home crowd?

At 4:38 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

The average fan who thinks names = reason to go to the stadium. I think more people are starting to catch onto the fact that the team is poorly constructed, though.

In Tanaka's case, they're marketing him to the Japanese baseball fans. In the case of the Cubans, there's not a big enough market, hence the Yankees' lack of interest.

It's all about milking as much out of the brand as possible and lining their pockets. Winning is secondary for this ownership group.

The Tigers are lighting up Esmil Rogers. Can someone explain why he was signed, again?

At 7:42 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

That junior ninja Eppler must have seen something, I guess.

I think they have accelerated their decline since he was hired.

Maybe I am in denial, but I think fans want some young dynamic offensive players, even their defense isn't stellar.

At 9:37 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Fans want star players in their prime, as well as an overall good team. Hal seems content to pretend to contend, as you often put it, but I think another year of missing the playoffs will cause outrage.

As I have said, A-Rod and Beltran are the offensive keys to the season. If they somehow get off to fast start, people will forget that they will likely be on the DL for extended periods at some point.

Tanaka working on a two-seamer.

So the franchise is worth $3.2b, but they can't sign Moncada, and the GM can't sell the owner on Abreu. The result is the Knicks under Dolan and Layden/Grunwald.

At 3:31 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Abreu's problem was 1B/DH being locked up, but it shouldn't matter. Play the best player and bench the other no matter what the salary. I'm personally tired of watching Teixeira swing at soft, low-and-away pitches and grounding into the shift.

At 4:19 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I understand that, but when your offense has been in decline since 2009, and a deep decline since 2011, you don't have that luxury.

OTOH, they had an opening at C and good developing in-house options, yet they stilled signed McCann

Refs is killing it offensively, but unless you have a constricted view of baseball as the resident Anon here, he needs to play in NY while he improves his defense.

That's really the test. To actually integrate Refs, Judge, Bird, and Severino on to the roster, or are they traded.

Three of those guys need to make, otherwise my fandom will be even less than now and it's slipping fast.

I watched maybe 25 games last year.

I used to watch every single inning even if I had to DVR and catchup while I work during the day.

Great....Refsnyder can drive in 2 runs while letting in 3 with his iron glove....

He has only played 2B for a couple of seasons now after CONVERTING from the OF.

Let him get a full season in AAA and get comfortable.

At 6:07 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I'd have no problem letting him get seasoned at AAA if I felt this team was a World Series contender with a suitable stopgap at second (in other words, not a guy who had a downright awful year last year and is playing out of position).

But let's be honest: For all of Hal's bloviating, this team is, at best, a wildcard hopeful. Just let him get big-league at-bats in a down year so he's up to speed sooner rather than later.

At 6:16 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Let's keep the exageratting about Refs glove to a minimum. He doesn't give up 3 for every two he creates let alone knocks in. And people who've seen him everyday say he's already passable. Obviously he needs work, and it should have been addressed over the offseason, but he's not a full season of AAA away.

Second ain't that hard to learn, as I had to after I hurt my pitching arm.

At 7:16 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

This mindset is killing the franchise:

It turns out Jose Pirela never had a chance to stick with the Yankees as long as Stephen Drew avoided the DL during spring training before suffering a concussion Sunday.
“In the winter time we kind of made our bed,’’ Cashman said of giving $5 million to Drew to play second base. “We intend to sleep in it. We hope the bed we made in the winter time plays to the level we expect. It’s not always going to be the case but you don’t change the sheets based on what you see out of spring training. I think [Drew] has swung the bat much better the last week.’’

At 7:39 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

They did make the bed but it's not the bet he thinks it is

At 8:00 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Allocating $5M for a shortstop who was miserable the year before to play a position other than his natural one was dumb, no question.

At 8:29 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

They jumped the shark so long ago that they forgot there was a shark. I don't know what it's going to take for them to get out of the quicksand they're sinking in.

At 10:30 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

What it's going to take is another losing season, or several, combined with the Red Sox stringing together multiple playoff berths and runs — and actually developing players — and the media calling the Yankees out for their gross underperformance and dumb signings, both big and small, before things finally change.

Take comfort that it won't last forever. It never does. Sometimes, though, it takes your team sucking and your rival excelling before change happens.

At 9:07 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

My biggest fear is a trade of top prospects to salvage the season.

The last two years, merely contending at the margins has been enough for them to make trades.

If they are a little better this season, and with some luck on the health front that's possible, they could seek bigger targets that cost more.

Cashman himself has said he was willing to make big trades in season.

Fortunately, they didn't have much to trade, but now with their top prospects closer to the majors, that may no longer be true.

Wally Matthews has a column at ESPN NY to the effect that Tanaka's use of a two-seamer may be indication of shielding his arm from four-seamer usage or pain from throwing it.

I said the column is premature speculation.

He replied:

wallace matthews ‏@ESPNNYYankees

speculation, by its definition, is done before you know for sure. But thanks for the help!

Journalism today is such a sham.

Did you see the backpage of the NY Post today from Madden?

Biggest shame about it is that guy is in the hall of fame (somehow) and guys who actually deserve it, like bonds & clemens will never be.

At 12:18 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I'll believe it when I see it:

@FeinsandNYDN
Hal Steinbrenner said on WFAN he had fun watching NYY's young players this spring: "Guys you're going to see a lot of in the years to come."

At 12:41 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

@FeinsandNYDN
Hal on this season: "I'm expecting a great year if we stay healthy."

He forgot the part about turning back the clock.

At 12:50 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

He's delusional if he expects the team to contend for a World Championship this season, but truth be told, if he's so convinced he has to get under the luxury tax, he has no choice but to trust the kids.

BTW, Lawyer, you just gained a Twitter follower. :)

I don't tweet much. I mostly follow business stuff. But I'll check it out.

Question: Is Betances ok or did Girardi overuse him?

At 1:43 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

We'll know fairly soon I imagine.

I mostly tweet work-related stuff, unless I'm watching The Walking Dead, but always good to follow a fellow Yankees fan to share in the misery of mediocrity.

With Brady Aiken (last years #1 overall) getting TJ yesterday, I'm hopeful he falls to the yanks and we can pick him up.

Would you take him at 16? Also, I could easily see his contract negotiation being a nightmare.

If they're interested, they should do a very thorough physical and a due diligence meeting with his agent. Unless everything checks out and the agent is someone whose word they can trust, my inclination would be to pass at 16.

At 1:11 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Vindication for a great signing!
@FeinsandNYDN
Stephen Drew was 6-for-36 (.167) entering today. He's 3-for-3 today, boosting that average to .231.

At 4:01 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

So M. Kay was asked if the Yankees would trade prospects for Upton if Beltran went down.

He said he didn't think they would trade Severino, Judge, and Bird EXCEPT for someone like Hamels.

As much as I think that Kay is an offensive fool, aggressively shilling for Hal and Cashman at their idiotic worst...

I think he is right.

At 4:19 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hamels would be the exception.

At 5:15 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I doubt Aiken will be around when the Yankees pick at 16

At 5:40 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

If they trade for any more over 30 players --

At 6:13 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I don't think they'd do it for Hamels -- if they would, why haven't they already? I also don't think Aiken would make it to the Yankees' pick.
