Tanaka Sharp Again
Masahiro Tanak was masterful as he worked 3.2 inning of 2 hit, 3K, 0 runs ball. He was once again using all of his pitches and changing speeds. He was also getting grounder which allowed Didi Gregorious look defensively gifted. I really do wonder what Didi will do for the pitching staff. I think they may be helping with his hitting, too, as he's not looking like a zero there. And Drew homered. And now McCann just did. 5-0 as I go back to watching...

My wish is to trade Gregorius in a package for a young SS who can hit.
Why not just be patient and wait for Mateo?
I don't understand the notion that didi can't hit - he may have some struggles against LHP but the majority of LHH face the same problem. His minor league track record indicates he isn't just an all glove SS.
Didi's plus defense makes up for his struggles against LHP.
Madden interviewed Hal. Pretty annoying.
do you got a link?

Here's a good River Ave piece on Didi's hitting and why it's promising.
"Why not just be patient and wait for Mateo?"
As with the (non-)signing of Cubans, I will believe that they can develop position players and starting pitchers when they actually do.
Beyond that, I value defense over offense, especially on an offensively challenged team.
And
Fuck Hal. I don't care what he says because it's written in disappearing ink.
Give Denbo a chance. What he's been doing so far has been really interesting.
I have no choice, although again, the GM is ultimately responsible for the good and the bad.
Signing guys like Drew and Capuano don't exactly fill me with hope. The GM plays a significant role in that.
Every few years they have some interesting talent, but they fizzle for various reasons, not the least of which is no extended opportunity to endure a learning curve.
There is no reason why Drew couldn't have been signed for SS and Refs and Pirela be given the chance to start at 2B from Game 1.
And they would still have another young starter on a team that needs the depth.
I have no problem waiting for Jorge Mateo or whoever else hypothetically develops, but I have zero expectations offensively for Gregorious. If he hits even halfway decently, whoever scouted him deserves a raise.
Hal talking about accountability is at least a good sign, but ultimately, I still don't think he understands how exactly to build a consistent winner in this day and age.
Gregorious is getting lower than expected results from his hit velocity, so those could correct and we'd then see a big adjustment in his OPS.
If you're wondering why folks like me and LINJ are skeptical that youth will actually get a chance, go read LoHud's latest report on Pirela. Absolutely ridiculous that he likely won't make the roster.
Too bad for him he's not an over-30 journeyman who came up in another organization — he'd actually have an inside track.
I am not a believer in Gregorius' bat, but he will get a longer shot than most young players because Cashman has more on the line, or at least that is the way he behaves with trades.
As for development, how can anyone not want to see the actual results given their pitiful track record?
The Yanks development results were great when Newman ran it, Then they promoted him and development struggled. Now they've totally re-done it so let's give the new team a chance.
Again, what choice do I have?
But when GM signs Drew and Capuano, it's not exactly the promise of a new day.
I read what Mike referenced:
“I don’t want to have to say that there’s no chance of him making our roster,” Joe Girardi said. “But I think Brian (Cashman) said it, our roster was fairly set (coming into spring training). You don’t ever lock yourself in and say, this is exactly what it’s going to be, but when we came to spring training, we were pretty sure — excluding the second catcher — who the 13 guys were going to be. They were kind of signed to do that. Things happen in spring training sometimes. You make adjustments (if necessary).”

This is dumb as shit. It's an old boring, league average or worse roster. The people that run this team are either dumb, or think most fans are, or both.
In fairness, most fans have no idea who Pirela is and won't have a problem with it, but informed fans like us were calling for him to be on the roster by the All-Star break LAST YEAR.
Don't get me wrong, I think defense is important (since that's the knock on Pirela), but at some point, you have to be able to score runs. This team doesn't have a single difference-maker in the lineup with Teixeira unable to stay healthy and unwilling to adjust to the shift and A-Rod pushing 40. At least with Pirela there'd be some chance of offensive upside, but the second someone goes on the DL, we all know Girardi is going to request a 14th pitcher.
Ridiculous.
Gregorious just had a really good AB against a lefty and ended up with a single.
If Sir Didi hits .260 and plays stellar defense it will be a good year
That's a big if. I don't really mind an all-defense SS if the defense is superb, but without an impact bat in the lineup, any offensive holes are a glaring weakness.
I think they may have found something that was easy to correct.
Does he know how to drag bunt? If not, can he be taught how to? With his speed, he should be able to beat out at least ten bunts per year, which would raise his average by 20 points or so.
Billy used to beg Mickey Rivers to start using bunts as a weapon, but Mickey was too busy at the track to practice.
I'm not sure .260 is a big stretch for DiDi...he knows he has the job and can relax - I'm sure plying with a veteran lineup will benefit him greatly as well. I really hope Pirela makes the roster as a super util
Did I sounds a bit brighter than "Mick the Quick/Thick" a/k/a "The Chancellor.".
I wrote Didi #$%&@ spell check :-)
This is either comedy or tragedy.
So Cashman has said in terms of roster construction:
"Everything with the Yankees is a short-term process," Cashman said on ESPN radio today. "Building the perfect beast over time, as you see with the Cubs or the Astros, that's not going to happen here." So really, nothing has changed. The Yankees will sign more old guys and hope that they click as they did in 2009. As Casey Stengel said, they say you can't do it, but sometimes it doesn't always work.

But when it comes to food and nutrition:
We’re trying to build a more perfect beast,” Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman said.

Look no further as to why this team is screwed with the current GM.
Just to clarify, I am all for eating well. As I get older, I continually have to change my diet and workout to compensate for lifespan issues, but if a GM can see the benefits of striving for the best in nutrition, he should be embarrassed not to pursue the same in roster construction.
And if some want to say his hands are tied, then he should have some integrity and move on.
Won't happen.
Rinse. Repeat.

I think this article misses the big picture, as does the GM.
It's not about HR or strikeouts, it's about having complete hitters who also take walks.
That's why this team has declined.
That's why the GM should go.
The short-term process approach is a direct order from Hal, so I don't really hold Cashman to that because he does what he's told in that sense.
His obsession with pitching and defense in lieu of hitting is one of his biggest flaws, along with developmental failures of prospects. He's at least trying to correct the latter; I hope he sees the light in regard to the former.
If you keep taking their money knowing what they are, it's in you too.
That's a lot of money to turn down, even with the supposedly constant interference.
Theo found more $ and more power. I don't think any other franchise thinks Cashman is as competent as Theo, and rightly so. He has promoted parity more effectively than any CBA.
Looks like it will be Tanaka over CC for Opening Day.
Utley can be had if a team takes on his full contract.
