Rangers Extending MZA?

Darren Dreger claims that the Rangers and Mats Zuccarello are working on an extension.  While that would seem a worthy enterprise given no salary cap; there is a salary cap and thus it reflects deeper choices for the organization.

To wit, Carl Hagelin and MSL are also going to be UFA's.  Would an extension for MZA preclude keeping the other two?   And while the Rangers have locked up their big three Dmen, and have Klein under control at what's turning out to be a great rate, they have even more forwards whom they have not attended to yet, like Stepan and Kreider.   Would an MZA extension mean less for those two, or risk losing them?

Zucc is a fine player and a gutsy sparkplug when he's going, but he has been a little slump prone, and when he's in a slump, doesn't have the fallback talent that say Hags does with his skating and defense, to still contribute much.   Btw, the same has been true of MSL this year.   He's had a deep slump.

In any event, given the choice I'd expect the Rangers to trade MZA, extend Hags and look to bring back MSL at a club friendly number.

We'll see what happens, but I was a bit surprised that they were working on an extension.

I read a rumor that Rangers and Sabres discussing a deal for Chris Stewart..no additional details provided. Do you like him Phil?

That rumor has been around throughout Stewart's career. Never know if it's true till it happens. He would add toughness, but they've been looking for a C to win faceoffs and a 6th or better D.

If Zucc is extended, then St. Louis is a goner unless he will accept a pay cut to make his contract team-friendly. Also, Hags may have to be traded or will also leave, as it is getting too tight with the salary cap.
